Not for nuthin', but the addition of the midday drawing has changed the characteristics of FF5 with regard to the number of times a hot number hits. I made an Excel spreadsheet for FF5 that goes back to 2002. It shows the number of hits that the hottest number of each year had which fall into a range of 61 to 68. To your point about variance, yes, JTJ is obviously going to be higher than a regular ticket. Both are going to be a huge variance, regardless. So, if variance is the concern, don't play the games to begin with.
