Over the opposition of two major gaming corporations, an Assembly committee voted 8-5 Thursday to let voters decide whether to legalize a state lottery. All Democrats on the Assembly Constitutional Amendments Committee backed Assembly Joint Resolution 5, while all five Republicans opposed it. Passage of the resolution in the committee is the first step in a long process before Nevada would join 42 other states in having a state lottery. A lottery ticket run to the border

If Nevada had a lottery, how much money would it bring to the retailers and state programs such as education? What impact would it bring to local businesses providing printing, advertising and other necessary services? How many jobs would that provide? As I left, it made me wonder, how many Southern Nevadans Alabamians ran to the border for themsel

Nevada lawmakers propose lottery to fund education
The only people who need be concerned about this are the people who operate the Nevada Numbers and the Nevada Keno games. Almost all of the remainder of the games are confined to casinos, or, in the case of some Keno games, are electronically transmitted to and from casinos that are under the same ownership. In addition, lotteries just don't have the flash, the atmosphere or the aura of casinos.Any state lottery in Nevada would rely mostly on the play of state residents.

Businesses near Nevada border popular for lottery players
I am not surprised, since Nevada does not have a state lottery. On the other hand, with Vegas and all the casinos, I am surprised Nevada does not have a state lottery. New Jersey has a big casino and one of the oldest state lotteries in the country - as far as I know they were the first state to have a daily numbers game (started 5/22/75). Why can't Nevada?
