Something is WAY off with this chart....and i mean waaaaayyyyy off, lol. A scratch off costing $30 each better not have odds of 171.43:1 and 240:1 to hit a $100 winner??? There has to be a $100 winner in each pack of 30 tickets or this looks to be the worst $900 investment for a full book of 30 tickets in the history of the florida lottery which is really saying something. Odds and chances describe the same thing. The game has odds and the players have odds. The game odds (for most games) are based on 1 winning combination out of all the possible outcomes. A player's odds are based on how many chances they have out of all of the possible outcomes. Since only a single winning combination is chosen for pick 3 then the game odds are that 1 winning combination in the 1000 possible combinations. Actually, the odds for Billion Dollar Blockbuster weren't good at all. Sure, the odds at a million were the best chance at hitting money like that, but the odds at the lower-tiered prize levels were awful. That's what is so deceptive and despicable about this whole situation--the only benefit for BDB was that you had a better chance at hitting a million dollars. You would understand WHY gambling is all about the odds, or the edge, if you were beating a game. The lotto isn't that game. But when you have the edge, it absolutely becomes about how much that edge is. RJOh, You've hit on a key misunderstanding about the odds of winning. Lets start with something concrete; the odds of winning the Mega Million lotto is 1 in 175,711,536. The odds against winning $100 in PB is 13,644 to 1 and that's by matching 3 numbers plus the bonus ball. If you're trying to match 4 numbers to win $100 it's 19,030 to 1 odds. The ratios between the two are the same. You could look for a better odds of happening to payoff odds ratio. Pick 3 digits in first drawing position and the odds against you will be 7 to 3 or 2.33 to 1 and pick 3 digits in the second position with the same odds. The odds against hitting the 9 front pairs are 5.44 to 1 and the payoff odds are 4.56 to 1. I can get a $60 to $1 payoff in KY where the payoff odds of 5.67 to 1 slightly exceeds the odds of 5.44 to 1 against happening.
