Lottery legislation: Inside Alabama's lottery debate
A drive across the Mississippi state line is becoming a common trip for Alabamians who want to play the state's new lottery.
At least twice a week, Aretha told us as she bought a ticket.
At least once a week, Joseph said from the convenient store right across the state line.
I would rather spend it where we live so we can pay for everything over there, said Brenda Gerganus as she bought a handful of tickets .
Gurganus said she'd rather her lottery money go to Alabama's schools.

Several books about coming into some serious money suggest the person who gets it should get Kidnap and Ransom insurance
I haven't read these unnamed books, but from your short synopsis of them I'd say they were being overly alarmist if not melodramatic. As far as I know, there have been just three lottery-related kidnappings and subsequent deaths; the Thorne child in Australia, the B

DC lottery contract is the subject of a federal probe with numerous officials under scrutiny
A federal grand jury is investigating the awarding of the $38 million contract to run the District of Columbia lottery, a process that raises further questions about corruption in a city government already beleaguered by criminal prosecutions.
Although no one has yet been charged in the lottery probe, authorities are looking for evidence of crimes including bribery and illegal steering of contracts, and numerous officials are under scrutiny, according to several people familiar with the probe

States up the online ante
The director of the New York State lottery said a few months ago he had cleared hurdles in his quest to sell lottery tickets over the Internet, but now that plan is stalling.
When the U.S. Justice Department in December narrowed its interpretation of the 50-year-old Wire Act, saying it banned only sports betting and not other forms of online gambling, the decision sparked hope in state capitals that lotteries could start selling tickets online and lead a charge into online gambling.
But th

Arkansas Lottery bill signed into law
May be up running this year
Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe signed identical House and Senate bills into law today to create an Arkansas Lottery to fund scholarships to Arkansas college students.
You could look at this as Arkansas becoming the 43 state to have a lottery, but there's another way to look at it. We're the first state where all of the lottery proceeds will go to college scholarships, Lt. Gov. Bill Halter, who spearheaded the drive for the constitutional amendment voters passed last

Privatization of Texas lottery may get 2nd look in 2009
Texans could buy lottery tickets at the checkout lines in supermarkets and big-box department stores, at coffee shops and cabarets. They could pay with credit cards or personal checks and play online or the old-fashioned way with a ticket that's also a tiny ad for anything from soft drinks to sporting events.
Those are just some of the proposals offered to state officials by some of the nation's largest financial firms that have an interest in remaking the 16-year-old government-run Texas Lot
