N.Y. Gov. wants to privatize lottery
New York may try to cash in on the future its lucrative lottery as a way to create a permanent education fund, and Wall Street is interested in taking the bet. The stakes are high for everyone, from students who could get better education to poor communities that might see more grocery money scratched away. For state government, a long-term leasing for part of the lottery and part of its profits to a private investor for 30 or 40 years could attract a massive upfront payment, perhaps in th

Don't buy lottery tickets for kids, researcher warns
Parents who buy lottery tickets as presents for their kids are gambling with their children's futures, says a McGill University researcher. It's really something that's common, said Alissa Sklar, a researcher with McGill's International Centre for Youth Gambling Problems and High-Risk Behaviours. Thirty percent of kids under 18 report having received a lottery ticket or scratch card as a gift, Skar said, citing a recent survey of children and teens in Quebec. Giving a child a lotter

Outlook for online gambling in U.S. discussed at conference
On the heels of a House Judiciary Committee hearing on a bill proposing an independent study on the feasibility of legalizing and regulating online gambling, former Senator Alfonse D'Amato, chairman of Poker Players Alliance, said he expects the legalization of online poker in the United States within 18 months. The panelists in the State of the Industry: Internet Gambling at the Crossroads keynote session at Global Gaming Expo (G2E) said pending sanctions by the World Trade Organization due

Mass. Lottery plans big expansion of keno-style game
The Massachusetts state lottery, which fell short of revenue projections last year, is dramatically expanding a keno-style game in a move it estimates could bring in an additional $160 million annually, officials said. The Daily Race Game, in which players can win up to $900 on a $1 bet, will expand from 200 to 1,500 locations across the state, and the graphics will change from cars to horses. Lottery commissioners on Wednesday approved the changes, which should be complete by next spring.

Tenn. Lottery CEO breaks silence on drawing errors
Lottery is committed to accountability By REBECCA HARGROVE (Tennessee Lottery President and CEO) and DENNIS BOTTORFF (Chairman of the Board of Directors) When Tennessee voters called for the creation of a state lottery in November 2002, two things were on most people's minds: Millions in funding for new, specific programs to improve education, and a form of entertainment that would provide cash prizes and other economic benefits to the state. Nearly five years later, the Tennessee Educ

Kentucky Lottery has record revenues
The Kentucky Lottery Corp. had a record $744 million in revenues, or total ticket sales, in the fiscal year ending June 30, according to year-end figures. The brisk sale of tickets for interactive, scratch-off games offset a decline in tickets sold for online, or computerized, games, including Powerball, Pick 3 and Pick 4. Those sales suffered, in part, because there was only one large Powerball jackpot, which was hit at $254 million last January. Some tickets for the interactive games se

Maryland Lottery helps taxpayers hit jackpot
The Maryland Lottery wants to help people dream. While the odds of those dreams becoming a cold, hard-cash reality are more than a million-to-one, look no further than the recent Mega Millions jackpot winners from Georgia and New Jersey, who each came away with half of a stunning $390 million pot. Last fiscal year, the Maryland Lottery generated more than $501 million for the state's general fund. These earnings benefited government-funded services and programs such as education, public he

N.Y. casinos don't see lottery as a threat
Since casino gambling began in New York in 1993, the increased competition for those gaming dollars hasn't seemed to hurt sales of New York Lottery tickets, which saw a record $6.8 billion in sales in the fiscal year ended March 31, 2006. Sales have been incredibly strong, said former Lottery Director Nancy Palumbo, who left the lottery late last year. New York's lottery, the most popular in the country, had an increase in sales of 7 percent in 2005-06. Officials from the four largest ca

Despite dire predictions, Net gambling not changed by new U.S. law
John Brokopp Courier-News When President George W. Bush signed the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act in October, many reports gave the impression it sounded like the death knell for the multibillion-dollar Web-based gambling industry. On the contrary, all it did was strictly regulate the process by which funds are transferred from users of the sites to the offshore companies which own and operate them. The practice itself wasn't declared illegal. Reputable foreign companies wh

TV station reports on the Kansas Lottery
Some say it's harmless entertainment. Others say it can lead to a dangerous addiction. Some say its a simple way to raise millions for important state programs. Others say it's a game that takes advantage of the poor. But, however you feel about the Lottery it's here to stay. The old adage, 'it's not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game' does not apply here. Tony Trotter says he's been playing the lottery for years. I figure somebody has got to win somebody's got to wi
