Online poker advocates say legalizing won't hurt lotteries
A casino-backed group pushing for federal legislation to make online poker explicitly legal says regulating online card play nationwide won't hurt state lotteries. Fair Play USA released a data analysis on Tuesday that showed no correlation between spikes and dips in the online poker market with changes in revenues for state lotteries. Eugene Christiansen, a founding partner with the firm that wrote the analysis, Christiansen Capital Advisors, LLC, said the data showed that poker and lotte

Starved state budgets prompt new interest in online gambling
The District of Columbia is not thrilled that its residents are traveling to Maryland, Pennsylvania and West Virginia to gamble in casinos. Starved for cash, like states across the country, the district wants some of the millions in revenue that gambling generates each year. So district officials want residents to gamble closer to home inside their homes, actually. Or in cafes, restaurants and bars. By year's end the district hopes to introduce an Internet gambling hub that would allow Washin

Mass. state senator wants online lottery ticket sales
A Beacon Hill push under way today to sell Massachusetts Lottery tickets online which backers say could boost cash-strapped state coffers by as much as $1 billion a year is getting strong support from an unlikely corner liberal icon U.S. Rep. Barney Frank. I don't understand why liberals think they're supposed to tell people not to gamble, Frank told the Herald yesterday. They favor gay marriage, legalization of marijuana and sex-oriented literature, but not gambling. It's totally inconsiste

Ohio Senate bill includes privatizing lottery
Critics say gaming corp. drafted language The Ohio Senate's latest version of the state budget bill includes language to privatize the Ohio Lottery that is nearly identical to legislation drafted by a gaming company hoping to manage the $2.5 billion agency's day-to-day operations. The language, drafted by GTECH, an industry giant that once ran the Ohio Lottery's back-office operations, was added to the massive budget bill virtually unchanged and without any public hearing. The inclusion of

New Hampshire repeals taxes on lottery prizes
Lottery commission celebrates with Tax Repeal Tea Party Starting Monday, New Hampshire residents no longer have to pay taxes on their lottery winnings. The state imposed a 10 percent tax on gambling winnings over $600 in 2009, but the tax was repealed by the current Legislature under a bill going effect Monday. Gov. John Lynch last week signed into law the bill repealing the tax, which officials said hurt the racetrack and battered lottery sales after the state enacted it two years ago

Ct. Senate votes to collect delinquent taxes from lottery winnings
Connecticut state Senator Carlo Leone (D-Stamford) said Thursday that the Senate has approved a bill he co-sponsored that would deduct delinquent taxes from certain awards paid to Connecticut Lottery winners. Allowing lottery winners who don't pay their taxes to collect prizes without contributing what they owe is unfair to everyone else who plays by the rules, said Senator Leone. Our state is in the middle of a fiscal crisis, and we are asking everyone to sacrifice in order to resolve it. N

D.C. first in USA to offer Internet gambling
The District of Columbia is becoming the first U.S. jurisdiction to allow Internet gambling, trying to raise millions of dollars from the habits of online poker buffs and acting ahead of traditional gambling meccas like New Jersey and Nevada. Permitting the online games was part of the 2011 budget and a 30-day period for Congress to object expired last week, said D.C. Council member Michael A. Brown, who authored the provision. The gaming would be operated by Intralot, a Greece-based company,

Nevada lawmakers discuss lottery
Pointless annual exercise? By Todd Northrop In what would seem to outside observers to be an annual exercise in futility, the Nevada state legislature has again taken up the issue of creating a state lottery. With lines for lotto tickets like the one for Mega Millions this week in Primm, California, many residents believe Nevada should keep that money within the state and not send it to California. Some are calling for the state to use lottery-generated funds to beef up the state's educ
