N.J. Lottery players question logic of shutdown
Gov. Jon S. Corzine's decision to shut down state services created confusion for lottery players and those who sell New Jersey lottery tickets. Sharon Rush, who owns Macaro's Deli in Pennsauken, said she learned about it online. They haven't told us anything, Rush said. Our customers don't even know about it yet. Rush said shutting down the lottery and casinos because of fiscal woes simply doesn't make sense. Something that makes money for the government shouldn't shut down, sh

Illinois lottery privitization plan panned by tax group
An estimated $10 billion windfall from the sale or lease of the Illinois Lottery for state education funding would be short-lived, maintains a new report by the Center for Tax and Budget Accountability, a Chicago-based fiscal policy think tank. Introduced by Gov. Rod Blagojevich May 23, the proposal calls for funneling $4 billion in sale proceeds for school construction, text books purchases and new programs, such as full-day kindergarten and a longer school year. Illinois Gov. won't reveal data on lottery sale plan
The Blagojevich administration said Tuesday it won't release a consultant's work on how much money the state could make by selling or leasing the Illinois state lottery. The administration compared such a move to sharing playbooks with rival sports teams. Republicans have called for public disclosure. Gov. Democratic Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich today will unveil an election-year school funding plan that calls for leasing the state lottery for the next decade to a private firm in return for $10 billion in upfront cash. Schools would get at least $1 billion a year for the next four years from such a deal, with the remaining $6 billion going into an education trust fund governed by a board

Kansas lottery tickets to be shredded, not scratched
A state law is forcing the Kansas Lottery to shred an estimated 400,000 unsold scratch-off tickets including thousands of dollars worth of jackpot winners. Lottery director Ed Van Petten said Wednesday that the state's annual series of scratcher games that benefit programs for state veterans could be sold only from May 1 through Nov. 30 under the 2003 state law that authorized the benefit games. At the time there was a fear the games could get stale if they were sold year-round, he sai

Oklahoma bans some businesses from selling lottery tickets
A bill to prohibit pawn shops, payday lenders and check-cashing businesses from selling Oklahoma lottery tickets has won final legislative approval. The bill by Senator Kathleen Wilcoxson passed the Senate yesterday and now goes to the governor.
