Raffle-style lottery games are the hot ticket this holiday season
The New Jersey Lottery is giving four players a chance to celebrate New Year's Eve with a million dollar prize, although it is coming with a larger than usual price tag.
Recently, the lottery introduced a new game "Million Dollar New Year" that offers players the best-ever odds at winning a million dollars, along with several other smaller prizes.
But it comes with a small catch — the tickets cost $20 each.
The game has been met with some optimism among local lottery players, although there are concerns over the cost to play.
"It sounds like fun, but $20 is a lot for the lottery," New Brunswick resident Wanda Davis said at the Hess Express on Route 18 in East Brunswick last week.
Davis spends $5 a day playing the lottery but hasn't decided if the new game will be added to her routine.
"I like to spread my money out, but, who knows, I might save up and play this one," Davis said.
Tickets went on sale Nov. 20, but some local retailers will begin selling them this week.
"This type of game has been played in other states with wonderful results," said Dominick DeMarco, public relations officer for the New Jersey Lottery.
"While the tickets are more expensive, the chances of winning and having a very happy New Year have never been better," DeMarco said.
The lottery will sell 500,000 of these tickets between now and the New Year.
Each ticket has a six-digit bar code that is randomly selected.
The lottery will hold a drawing New Year's Eve when the $1 million-prize winner will be selected.
There will be 500 other prizes ranging from $500 to $100,000.
DeMarco said the new game offers good odds.
"For instance in our Pick-6 game the chances of winning the main prize are one in 13.9 million," DeMarco said, "but in this game the chances of winning a million dollars are one in 125,000."
Its a wonderful oppertunity... $20.00 is a kick for a oppertunity I think that it would be more easier to play more at $10.00 of course but hey somebodys gonna win... do you got your $20.00??

I think 20 is too much for a lottery ticket...how much are they giving away 500 million dollars?
yeah I believe so that is what they all are doing for each state.... I played the one in Ohio and got 2 tickets NEVER again any how I would have rather played it for the MM or Instants LOL
20 dollars for a lottery ticket is too much..How much are they giving away? 500 million? There is a scratchoff here in Ga that cost 10 dollars and they are giving 200 million (or 200 million in prizes not sure)...

There is nothing like losing $20. in 5 seconds. Forget about it!!
How is that different than losing $35 in a week or $500 in a year? If $20 for a 1 in 125,000 chance of winning a bad deal what about $1 for a 1 in 175 million chance? If you balance risk and reward its no different than buying $20 worth of MM tickets for jackpots of $50 million.

Hey you'll
Come to Texas and spend $30 for a chance to win a $3 million prize.
Only 2 $3 million prizes included in several million scratch tickets, including a few $10,000 prizes.
A Christmas gift (rip off) from your friendly lottery commission.
Yeah that would just TICK me off lmao Ours is at least 5 Mill and I think there is a 6 5 Mill winners I think and then alot more of the mill and so on yeah would be MAD at those chances there .. Ya want me to send ya some Windfalls that we got? Lol
I spent $30 on a Connecticut scratch last year (and won $100.) A $20 ticket is worth it if there are no annuity-only prizes, and the payout % is decent. NY's $10 and $20 scratches are annuity-only.
yeah, most states just con their lottery players when it comes to scratch tickets. I think massachussetts has the best prizes in their $10 dollar scratch tickets because all of them give you a shot of becoming a millionare. Nowonder massachusetts people rarely win the mega millions, could be because they don't play as much because local games are sufficient. go to the website and confirm.

Michigan scratch offs STINK!!!! for $20 they payout $2 million...bought 1 once and got my money back...WOW!!! the raffle here pays out in annuity...what a bunch of greedy suckers at the ole MSL.. they even have $10 tickets that offer $1 million and are paid out in annuity...LOL
The above table list the distribution of prizes and cash amounts. It doesnt indicate anywhere that $500 million in prizes are being disbursed.
Staying focused on the topic will hope those who are interested in learning the stats along with the overall odds. Ya gotta play to win!
To some folks in New Jersey it is alot of money to lose. Its all on how you see it. I personally see it as an opportunity to win! To each their own though.
I think it's is too much for a lottery ticket and if everyone agreed with me anything above $1 would stay on the shelf and these games would all lose money. But apparently 500,000 people think $20 is just fine to spend on a single lottery ticket, so the marketplace has spoken.
I agree that $20 a pop is a lot of money. This is an interesting thread, since it really wasn't mentioned when we were discussing the Florida raffle. I almost bought a few, but I waited too long. All the hype finally got to me and I even had the money in my wallet ready to play, but they sold out very quickly. But I also kept thinking that if I didn't hit anything, losing $40 or $60 dollars on one game would be too much. The odds were advertised as "the best ever" because 10 people will win a million on New Year's Day. However, since they are selling $1,250,000 tickets, 1,249,990 people won't be that lucky! I hope members who bought them like Floridian or DoubleDown win, but we'll probably never hear about it. Suddenly they'll disappear from LP and we'll all wonder "what ever happened to......?"
Most of the states selling these "raffle" tickets have had no problem selling out the entire subscriotion. And every one I've seen so far has had the payout percentage right at 50%.
Justxploring, that is an interesting thought/question? How many LP members would leave after a big win? I thought to myself, venture over, at least you are playing with better odds and I did. I am headed to Philly and NJ in a couple of days, wish I could get a ticket for ya...but we are in no club...and you know how that goes. LOL!
Suddenly they'll disappear from LP and we'll all wonder "what ever happened to......?"

Do you know if the top prizes in the Michigan raffle have a cash option? AFAIK all other lottery raffles are lump sum.
Illinois currently has 5 different ten dollar cards with million dollar prizes and one $20 card with a $2 million prize.
The tens suck, but believe it or not, the 20's actually aren't that bad. I've gotten 2 $400's, a $200, and about 6 $100's and many $50's on it. They really fly off the shelves too. Obviously, not many people around Chicago have an issue with the price of the 20 card. Sometimes when I want one, they're sold out in less than a day. 60 card packs of them. And the $2 million is one lump sum, not annuity so that's cool.

$20 is too much when the odds of getting something back hover around 1 in 1,000.
For anybody with a lick of sense it isn't just how much the ticket costs and the odds. The potential winnings are just as important. You'd be a moron if you thought $20 was too much to spend for a 1 in 1000 chance of winning a million bucks, but you'd be an even bigger fool if you bought a $1 ticket with a 1 in 5 chance of winning $1.

20 dollars for a shot to be rich,,,hell no. You be better off buying essentials like food, medicine, gas and new package of boxerbriefs....even though 20 won't go far today, but it does help to buy important stuff etc etc.

Shoot, I would come in and let ya all know after all we would have a to have a LP to celebrate!!
I think the $20 is reasonable for one ticket on one yearly drawng. I'm hoping for $500 (or more, of course, but $500 would make me happy.) One thing is a little wrong in the story, to say the barcode (or the serial number) is "randomly generated". Being there are a limited number tickets sold and all prizes awarded on one drawing, it would make more sense (and is probably the case) to issue them in serial order. That is, I buy one at a store in North Jersey, and a second later one is sold in South Jersey. The # there is one higher than mine because it was the next ticket (timewise) sold. So that means if you hear a winner was sold where you normally play, it only matters what TIME it was sold, so calling them a "Lucky Location" would be erroneous and you won't know if you were "close" to buying a winner other than if the serial # is very close to yours.
PS- what is this about Hot Lotto going computerized?????? If Powerball or Mega did the same thing it would be a huge mistake!
