PLAYING THE LOTTERY IS NOT CHEAP.

$100 PER YEAR X 50 YEARS=$5,000.

Keep adding $100 per year to those -$5,000 in the hole. Yes, you have already played the lottery for 50 years.

Owning and keeping a car is expensive too.

I think we all get the point that it costs money to play the lottery. We play for the enjoyment and the hope of winning big.

(3+2+3+2 (per week)) * 52 weeks = 520$ per year * 50 years = 26000$ (not including the opportunity cost of lost interest)

26000$ for a lifetime of dreams and amusement with no wear and tear on my kidneys or liver.  Sounds like a bargain to me.

For those who only want the thrill of playing and none of the cost there is the prediction board.  Ten plays for every game every drawing and bragging rights all free.

buying food, eating, gas, paying for service calls (ac, eletrician) and just waking up cost money...  a few bucks a week isn't going to hurt me

Speaking of lack credibility,  equating a car to the lottery....Pretty much like comparing apples to tomatoes.

I Agree!, but some people are getting pretty upset when their threads get a "1 star" so maybe just posting what they don't like about a thread is a better idea?

Spending $5 once a week having a fast food lunch is $250 a year and $12,500 over 50 years so your analogy might stretching it too much.

Which is about a tenth of what the average American worker will spend on coffee during that time.

Playing the lottery is a vice, much like spending $6 for a pack of cigarattes is a vice.  People get wrapped up into it and it becomes a one way addiction-- they keep buying even though their results are close to zero.  I have to say I recently won $500 on a scratch off, and it was exciting as I was scratching to see repeat numbers as I knew that was a good sign.  But even at that, there was no burning desire to go and "re-invest" in more tickets.  I only buy one once in a while.  I think some of it is really absurd, like considering a ticket that gives you a prize equal to the cost of the ticket a "winner".  I don't think of that as winning, I think of it as breaking even.  Breaking even is better than outright losing, but still, it's not like you are really a winner.  I won $100 on a scratch off after winning the $500 and it was kind of a let down.  Winning something just sets something in your mind to want more and I think that is how they rope you in.  You have to be aware of your own greed impulses before you blow your rent on something stupid like lottery tickets.
