I believe a cooling-off period before winners' can collect prize money would be a good idea. It would give winners' time to adapt to their new reality. It would also give winners' an opportunity to get professional legal and financial advice, before they claim their winnings.

    I would like to suggest:

Prizes over $500,000 - a 90 day cooling off period.

Sorry, I meant to rate this a "Five Stars" but messed up.  This is a much better topic than constantly droning on about anonymity.

Yes, I would.  A time delay of 90 days would - or should -  satisfy those of us who want transparency and should be more than enough time to get those "ducks in a row" before a winner's name is announced.   I also think the time period should start after claiming, not when the JP was won.

Again, my apologies for accidentally rating this thread lower than I intended.  I would change it if I could.  Embarassed Mea Culpa

To me this ideology serves to protect people from themselves and not so sure i agree with it. Many people are responsible and have put thought into things should they win, so why should they have to wait 90 days before enjoying their winnings because others need protecting from their irresponsible behaviors. I can see where a 90 day cool off period MIGHT help those kinds of people, but on the other hand, just not sure why other winners have to suffer the consequences by having their winnings withheld for 90 days.

I have to say no...i do not support a cool off period. Let responsible winners get on with their new life and let those who are irresponsible do what they are going to do regardless.

I'm not sure to be honest, I would be a nervous wreck if I had to wait 90 days!

No way! 1 star.  I would support putting off any press releases for 90 days or more.  That way people could adapt easier.  How are you going to adapt without the money?  ha ha

I would get the ticket verified first then make them wait about a 2 months. No press conference until $$ is in the bank.

No, not at all. Irresponsible idiots will still be irresponsible idiots 90 days later.

Responsible winners deserve to be able to get on with their new lives.

HELL NO. I have been cool waiting my whole life for a win, once I get it I will be HOT. Red Devil But I am well prepared and every day is time wasting, and time is MONEY. The majority are fine and do well just because there are few bad insurances is no reason to be biased against everyone. Also you don't have any right keeping someone's winnings from them because you think they need to "cool off." Some of us are cool all the time and do not make brash decisions and blow money. It is not the job of the lottery to act as a psychologist and financial advisor. I waited long enough and I am well prepared so I would start my new life immediately not wait months. As John sated "tomorrow is not guaranteed." You got to live now not just for the future. Also this is a preconceived notion which is the same as discrimination assuming that everyone is going to go crazy just because a few did etc. But honestly that is their choice and it is not the lottery's job to try and protect people from themselves as I said. This would put a lot of stress on those who really need it and need it NOW not 90 more days of poverty. Many have won it JUST in time to save themselves and did just that. You think the lottery would give you a free ticket and just let you pay it later when you "cooled off" after you loss? HELL no! I paid my money and I want my win IMMEDIATELY. Sure I would be responsible and I am well prepared but that my business not anyone else's business what I do with and when. I paid for the ticket.

                          There's already a "Cooling off " period.

The time between you win and the time the lottery office opens.

                          Can't do anything til then.

Or you can make it longer if you choose.

And that is TOO long. LOL Except if you win on Saturday or Friday for MM you got the whole weekend to ice down. LOL Most would not like not sleeping 90 days, but can handle 24-48 hours. LOL

Absolutely NOT!  Winners already have anywhere from 6 to 12 months before they have to turn in their ticket. If people are going to be stupid 90 days is not going to make any difference.
