It depends on how precise is good enough. For the number of unique numbers that are most likely when rolling a die 6 times it's plenty close enough, because anything between .59 and .74 will get you the correct answer of 4 when you round to the nearest whole number. By the time you get to a roulette wheel with odds of 1 in 36 it's only good enough if you're happy with an answer that's close, but not correct.

For a roulette wheel with 36 possible, and equally likely, results the probability of any result is .027778, and the probability against any particular result is .972222. The probability of any particular result not occurring in 36 tries is .972222^36 = .362710, and the probability of any particular result occurring is .637290. That also gives us the most likely number of unique results: .637290 * 36 = 22.94. Since the number of unique results obviously has to be a whole number we need to round up (to the nearest whole number), so we would expect 23 unique numbers as the most likely result.

And while the crude approximation of 1/3:2/3 gives the correct answer for 6 rolls of a die, the low number of possibilities means that even the correct calculation of odds is only an approximation of the theoretically likely number of unique results, with an increasingly large number of possibilities resulting in an increasingly precise calculation. The actual theoretically likely number of unique results is about .632. For 6 rolls of a die that's 3.792. While that's obviously an impossible result for a single trial, the average result of many trials will tend to approach that number.

The general definition of unique is "one of a kind" so basically those numbers are unique because the were drawn at least once. Why can't the not drawn numbers unique too?

What is unique when numbers follow a "normal for all" distribution?

Over a number of 36 drawing trials one or more numbers might not be drawn, but the probability of them being drawn in the next 36 drawing trial is exactly the same as it was in the first trial. Because there is a probability some numbers won't be drawn, some will be drawn just once, and some multiple times, when it happens there is nothing unique.

Im quickly dropping in here.

My pick 5 has alot of repeat pairs triples etc. This exhausting amount of verbage and formulas means nothing. Track your game and you will hit the prize. Last month I hit on one ticket 2 of 5 a 3 of 5 and a 4 of 5 by just watching and anticipating what was going to hit. I didn't use some complex formula.

I hit 3 of 5 all the time. The moral of the story is all these formulas are just something to talk about and mean nothing in the lottery unless they prove they hit.

Sometimes it's extremely difficult if not practically impossible to get people to disregard the smoke and mirrors. Instead, they seem to enjoy the ride down the proverbial Garden Path....... helpless to extricate themselves from being totally deceived by known forces in their midst who would argue that they have come here for the sole purpose of helping people. These forces would also argue that they have a winning MIRACLE system; that is, until asked to post numbers before the drawing !

Unique simply means a number that comes up during the 36 spins. With 36 spins you'll get 36 results, but since some will be duplicates there won't be 36 unique numbers. All of the numbers that are drawn are unique because 1 isn't 2 or 3 or 4, etc. which makes 1 one of a kind regardless of how often it comes up. If it comes up 3 times that's 3 results, but only one unique number.

KY of NYYe know your maths mate.. repeats means more than once.. if the odds are lower u see more of 2+ repeats.. but the ratio uniques/repeats tends to be 63/37.
i generated 3 series of 1000 pick3 sets then i stripped the duplicates in each set.. the results were 640, 629, 635 unique sets.. pretty close to ionsalius paradox.
i did it many more times automatically with special software (goolg OccupancySaliuParadox.exe).. the result was 635 uniques/365 sets not drawn in 1000 trials.

63.2%/37.8% is a maths limit not an absolut number.. for roulette the ratio is closer to 65% uniques/35% not drawn (sum like 24-25 uniques).. the OP had the wrong impression those was exact numbers.. they are variable and get close to the percentages in a large number of tries…
there r gamblers who bet more on repeats.. they see no repeats on a marquee they bet all the numbers on the display cos they believe a repeat will com.. its rare to see a marquee without repeats.. goog(le) luck!!!

Yep, 36 numbers "comes up" in 36 spins and some repeat, but that doesn't change the definition of unique: "

being the only one of its kind; unlike anything else" or answers my question. The last time I looked players and mathematicians expect one of the 36 numbers to be drawn in everyone of the 36 drawings.

It's unique when numbers do not follow normal distribution or if 37 or 38 were drawn. Again, what is unique when numbers follow a normal for all distribution?
