Can't Get Much Worse Than This

Just when things start falling into place for the Panthers AGAIN, they stink it up at home against the Steelers. The Falcons did their part by losing to Dallas, and the 'Aints did their part by losing to Washington. Yet, the Panthers decided to make things interesting by losing, and losing badly! They are still in the playoff hunt, miraculously, but I think it's time to stick the fork in them. They have no life, they play with no heart, and have pretty much given up. I actually think that Jake Delhomme has played his last game here in Charlotte, which is a shame, considering the exciting times he provided to us. Oh well, like they say...better luck next year.

The Worst Mistake a Paper Has Made

How about this for a mistake in today's Charlotte Observer:

LINCOLN CHARTER 66, N.C. SCHOOL FOR THE DEATH 35

Lincoln15112020--66
N.C. School361511--35

LINCOLN CHARTER 66 -- Dylan Cronin 21, Matt Bivens 15, Peterson 6, Splain 5, Cook 4, Talbert 4, de la Pena 2, C. Dishman 3, Scruggs 2, Campbell 2, Sadler 2.

N.C. SCHOOL FOR THE DEATH 35 -- Zachary Parks 15, Stedman Smith 10, Evans 4, Lake 4, Gaithers 2.

Now, it seems that the first time wasn't enough, but then the second time is bad too. NOTE: this is supposed to be the N.C. School for the Deaf, which is a great institution mind you.

But look at the box score...isn't this ludicrous? I mean, it would appear that ol' Zachary Parks (who is living, ya'll!) woke up from his dirt nap to score 15 points.

And just to make matters worse, they make this mistake TWO MORE TIMES from the girls game:

N.C. SCHOOL FOR THE DEATH 42, LINCOLN CHARTER 37

Lincoln144118--37
N.C. School812814--42

LINCOLN CHARTER 37 -- Brittney Berryhill 12, V. Richey 8, S. Barbagli 6, A. Barbagli 4, B. Richey 4, Eckler 3.

NORTH CAROLINA SCHOOL FOR THE DEATH 42 -- Ashanti Allen 18, Danielle Collins 10, Dawley 7, Ballew 6, Osborne 1.

Record: LC 2-5.

Yet here, the Death school won! How about that? If you are Lincoln Charter, you are feeling pretty bad about losing to a bunch of "stiffs".

Wow...how can they ever repay this back?

They were going to send out a Top 10 list to David Letterman something to the tune of

North Carolina School for the Death - a place where classes really bore you to death

North Carolina School for the Death - a school who's curriculum is to die for

Everyone is dying to go to the North Carolina School for the Death

Again, not ragging the school. It's a fine institution. Just wearing out this ridiculous gaff by a Top30 market newspaper.

Panthers Slide Right Out Of Contention

It's amazing how you can have such high hopes for your team, only to have them let you down. The Panthers, once the national media's Super Bowl hopefuls, have now sunk to mediocre at best. This team will first of all have to win three in a row to close the season (unlikely the way the Steelers, Dirty Birds and 'Aints have been surging of late), and rely on a LOT of help from teams including - dare I say, Dallas - to help push back other contenders. Ain't gonna happen folks.

This team has recently been banged up with injuries, and even those folks that are out haven't contributed an amount equivalent to a hill of beans. Panther "star" receivers Steve Smith and Keyshawn Johnson have not played up to their potential, with both close to the NFL lead in dropped passes - only slightly behind another ego-maniac Terrell Owens for the league lead. The Panthers offensive line, once thought to be gelling around Week 6, have not been able to block an 80-year-old woman to create running room, thus creating scenarios for Jake Delhomme to win with his arm, which isn't going to happen. If you want to win with a QB's arm on this team, it would have to be with 35-year-old Chris Weinke, who's arm is superior to Delhomme's, but without a running game, the defense can key on shutting down Carolina's receivers. Those same receivers who couldn't catch a cold on Sundays this year.

Carolina's defense, once revered as one of the top 10 defenses in NFL History, has been terrible too. They cannot stop the run, which is surprising, and All-World freak DE Julius Peppers, once the league leader in sacks, hasn't touched an opposing quarterback for meaningful plays in almost a month. The secondary is old and brittle, and once-hopeful CB Chris Gamble seems to give up on plays, therefore creating more work for geriatric S Mike Minter. Gamble will need to start improving again if he wants to continue earning fat cash as a Panther. He has already lost his PR job to Smith, which is something the Panthers did not want to rely on, but the return teams and special teams overall have been dreadful at best.

As you can see, the Panthers have been a colossal disappointment. If they were to somehow luck out and get into the playoffs, the "Big Boys" - Dallas, New Orleans and Chicago - would have a field day wiping them from contention again. What can I say, but "better luck next year, fellas!"

Bo Schembechler

My condolences to the University of Michigan family as well as the family of Bo. What a class act from a university that I usually like to look down on (as you can tell I am an Ohio State fan), but today is different. On the eve of what could be college football's greatest game, college football lost one of its most colorful ambassadors. Bo vs. Woody was probably the all-time greatest coaching rivalry in the all-time greatest football rivalry, and arguably the best rivalry in sports (outside of my Tar Heels v. Duke!).

Wolverine fans will carry a heavy heart into the Horseshoe tomorrow afternoon, and this timing couldn't be any worse for the Buckeye faithful either. The traditional "Win One For The Gipper" must be haunting Buckeye brains right about now as they prepare for the most anticipated game of this century.

R.I.P. Great Bo! We will all miss you...and yes, even us Buckeye fans will miss you too!

Have You EVER....

....gone into a restaurant and when they ask what you would like, you bust out with a "I'll have the roast duck with the mango salsa...."?

I did that in Hilton Head this past weekend spontaneously and got some roaring laughs...

Try it...you'll like the response.

Tar Heels Make Case for Greensboro

The North Carolina Tar Heels have already punched their ticket to the annual March Madness, but last night's 22-point blowout victory over rival N.C. State has them thinking "Greensboro". Why, do you ask? Simple - "home" games in the first two rounds of the NCAA men's basketball tournament are up for grabs.

Because of the new format that the NCAA adopted two years ago, teams can stay within their own "pods" even if they are placed in a regional that wouldn't otherwise allow such flexibility. For instance, if the Tar Heels secure one of the top 4 seeds in their region, even if they are placed in the West Regional, they would still play their first two rounds in Greensboro, even though Greensboro is a traditional East Regional host city. This rewards good play from the top teams of the year, allowing them to not have to travel as far for first round games, and gives their fans an opportunity to watch them live.

Last year, Duke and North Carolina both played their first- and second-round games in Charlotte, even though both teams played in different regionals - Duke in the Southeast and UNC in the East. North Carolina went on to win the national championship last year over #1 Illinois.

So, why is North Carolina starting to feel that a home series in Greensboro is inevitable? The Tar Heels have played as well together and as consistently as they have all year, despite losing their top 7 scorers from last year's team to either graduation or the NBA draft. Despite predictions that the Heels were to finish in the bottom half of the ACC, they have now found themselves a half game out of second place in the conference, with two seemingly easy wins with Maryland and Virginia up next - both at home - and a showdown with top-ranked Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham. Whereas the Duke game is all but a guaranteed loss, the other two should be wins for the Heels, which could find themselves securing second place in a year they were supposed to be "bad".

The Tar Heels committed a season-low 6 turnovers last night against a team in NC State that prides itself on superior defense, a great motion offense, and experience far greater than the young Tar Heels. Along the way, senior leader David Noel scored a career-high 25 points in his last game in Raleigh, and pulled down 11 rebounds. The Heels dominated on the boards, which ultimately provided the cushion for the victory. With this impressive win against the 14th-ranked Wolfpack, along with come-from-behind wins against Wake Forest and Georgia Tech last week, the Heels are poised to make a late postseason run. This doesn't even include its victories against traditional powers Arizona and Kentucky (at Lexington).

With all of the good going on in Chapel Hill, would it be surprising if Carolina could somehow beat Duke at Duke, win the ACC tournament and perhaps go farther in the NCAAs than their bitter rivals 8 miles away in Durham? At this point, nothing would surprise me from these Tar Heels.

Nike Provides Lottery-Like Funds for Olympic Athletes to PRODUCE!

It never ceases to amaze me how corporate giants rule the sporting world. Take for instance the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin this month.

Nike provided a huge cash incentive to sponsor Bode Miller. Nike gets the benefit of having their commercials broadcast everywhere, and then Miller falls flat on his face, in a matter of speaking. Miller is one of those kids that you like to watch fail. You know, the kid down the street who is bragging that he is better than you at everything he does, and then when you finally whip him, or when he gets whipped, you have that smug grin underneath your straight face. I'm all for the patriotism of the Winter Games and of the great U.S. of A, but when Nike puts up huge dollars to have a y kid from the U.S. go win a California-rush-size haul of gold medals, and he fails, well, I can't just help but chuckle. And then Miller rolls his ankle playing a pick-up game of basketball while in the Olympics? Say it isn't so!

Now, Miller isn't the only Olympic athlete that should be thrown under the bus either. Male speed skating stud-muffin Apolo Anton "Yoko" Ohno has yet to produce a gold medal this time around either. And here we were thinking that he was the best in the world. Only time will tell this week if he can improve upon his earlier bronze medal performance.

Let's hope that Nike has learned its lesson this time around, although we all know they haven't. They are getting some brash young kids to push their wares, but the bad thing is that these kids aren't producing the wins like expected. It's bad enough that Nike supports some of the best "brats" in the professional sporting realm. Do they have to spill over into our "pristine" amateur realm as well?

GEICO is Now Beginning to Chap My "Arse"

Is it just me, or have all of the ads from insurance mega-carrier GEICO Corp finally run their course?

The cute little gecko was a nice twist to get the company's name out there initially. Then came the cavemen and their sophistication and being offended by comments made by a company spokesman. Clever.

However, GEICO's most recent ads featuring our little salamander wannabe have really begun to get stale. Who really cares what a team of geckos (or is it geck-oes?) can do to push insurance? And what is this ridiculousness when the gecko talks about "pie and chips"? Who cares? And what the h-e-double hockey sticks is he talking about? And that pretentious British accent is one of those that make you want to beat the next Brit you see on the street half to death with their pub's pint glass.

Perhaps GEICO has gotten to the point where they don't need any new business and that just putting their name out there, no matter how annoying  the ad may be is good enough. I believe if they aren't careful, they may start LOSING business. I for one will never purchase through them.

There aren't enough free pie and chips in this world to bring me to them!

#23 Tar Heels Rally to Beat Georgia Tech

Freshman Tyler Hansbrough scored a career-high 40 points as well as setting UNC and ACC freshman records for points scored as 23rd-ranked North Carolina beat Georgia Tech Wednesday night, 82-75. Hansbrough bested his previous career high of 27 points, thoroughly dominating a defenseless Georgia Tech frontcourt. He also added 10 rebounds.

It looked like it was going to be an early night for much of the Tar Heel starters as Georgia Tech raced to a 20-point first half lead, led by former Charlotte Latin star Anthony Morrow's 18 first half points. But the Yellow Jackets and Morrow faded into the warm Chapel Hill night, letting their lead slip away to the Tar Heels, who lost their top 7 scorers from last year's national championship team to either the NBA or graduation. Morrow, who carried the Jackets to their largest lead, scored only four points in the second half, two on a basket with less than a minute to play in the Smith Center.

Speaking of the Smith Center, Hansbrough also set a Smith Center record with his effort of 40 points, and was only one point shy of the ACC high this season, set and equalled by Duke's J.J. Redick. The previous best in the Smith Center was scored by UNC's Joseph Forte in 2000, when he tallied 38 points. The previous freshman record at UNC was scored four times (Walter Davis, Mike O'Koren, J.R. Reid and Antawn Jamison) with totals of 31 points each. And then we move to the ACC record, where the previous freshman mark was held by Clemson's Skip Wise in 1974 (38 points). Hansbrough also became only the eighth Tar Heel to score 40 or more points. It was an impressive effort by the freshman big man.

Up next for North Carolina (16-6, 7-4 ACC) is a contest at rival Wake Forest, who has seen its program slip into the cellar of the Atlantic Coast Conference. But make no mistake about it, this will be a hard fought battle in Winston-Salem on Sunday. For Georgia Tech (10-13, 3-9), led by Anthony Morrow's 22 points, this is a tough loss to take after upsetting 21st-ranked North Carolina State last weekend, snapping an eight-game losing streak. They next take on Maryland on Saturday.

Carolina's win is their fifth in six games (the loss coming to Duke last Tuesday) and has moved them into a tie for third place in the ACC. Georgia Tech's loss is their ninth in 10 games, and drops them to 11th place in the ACC.

Today is the Day!

I woke up this morning with a certain anticipation, you know the kind like you have before a big game or a big event, because for many millions of people in this country, we have a big event that takes place tonight around 11:59 Eastern time - the drawing of the super large Powerball lottery. For many, it is a shot in the dark, a stab at immortality (not to mention financial security), but nonetheless, it will most likely be a "donation" to the winners and the governments that are involved. Do I think that it will hit tonight? Almost certainly. Unless, of course, the powers that be want to make this jackpot the largest in U.S. History, which wouldn't be surprising either.

I also noticed that MegaMillions didn't hit either. $145 million isn't "chump change" either, and I believe that the jackpot will start soaring there too once the Powerball fiasco has been completed (most likely tonight).

I will keep my fingers crossed as I watch the drawing tonight with my lottery club's 100 tickets in hand (that is, if I don't buy anymore later on) and I will probably hold my breath when I see a few of our numbers drawn in sequential order, only to be let down by a series of numbers after the first three that aren't anywhere near what we played. And to add insult to injury, the Powerball will not land on any of our tickets either.

But I will keep a hopeful demeanor today, and dream that maybe, just maybe, that I will have the pleasure of informing the other 22 new millionaires in our lottery club about the winning ticket that we have in our possession tomorrow morning!

Good luck to all and have a great Hump Day!

My new status!

Well, this is my first entry, as I have just become a Platinum Member. I am very excited and wished I had done so long ago. I have so many things to work on for the lottery that I don't know where to start. I have many systems to test, and I guess what I need to do is put down a list, and just start. Don't move on to the next one until I am finished with what I started. That will allow me to maybe win an awful lot, and to help others win!

I have already played with some of the features. They are great! I can't wait to start sharing info with everyone.

Here's to winning in 2006!

Cheers
