On Cross-Examination
Amid the hysteria on guns, two stories saw better light this week, while a third one broke. First, recall the man who last August wounded a security guard at Family Research Council national headquarters. He chose his targets, which included three other organizations, because he found information on the Southern Poverty Law Center's website listing them as "hate groups." The latter organization is infamous for slapping the "hate group" label on any organization with which it disagrees. Remember leftist outrage at Sarah Palin's PAC for putting election "targets" on congressional districts not long before Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot in Tucson in 2011. Now? Not a word.
Second, in the even more famous case of George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin, still more evidence has surfaced that Zimmerman was not the racist portrayed by the Leftmedia and Barack Obama. In fact, Zimmerman had a black business partner, helped black kids in the neighborhood and, as a registered Democrat, supported Obama in 2008 because, in the words of his brother Robert, "the president's club had been a club of white men since our founding." Zimmerman, who still sports tire tracks from the Obama Express, apparently personifies this truth: When it comes to Obama supporters, black trumps Latino, and thug trumps gun owner.
Third, former Los Angeles police officer Chris Dorner allegedly went on a shooting rampage this week, murdering one officer and two civilians, as well as wounding two more officers. As we go to press, he is still at large. Dorner, also a Navy veteran, was fired from the department in 2009 for making false statements, and now claims he is seeking to punish corruption within the LAPD. What is often missing from media coverage, however, is the part of his manifesto announcing that he's pro-Obama, pro-Hillary for 2016, pro-gun control and anti-NRA.

In our local paper today, letter to the editor:

We can stop shootings
To the Editor:
The Sandy Hook tragedy is the 136th gun shooting at a school in America since 1764.
In those 136 shootings, 32 of them were stopped by intervention.
When it was the police intervening, there was an average of 14 people murdered before the intervention.
When it was a civilian intervening, there was an average of two people murdered before the intervention.
We know exactly how to stop these school murders. We only need to make one change: Ar…
(Note: This letter ends abruptly because it has been truncated to 450 characters. This is in compliance with the recently issued Presidential Executive Order limiting the 1st amendment “Freedom of Speech” clause to 450 characters in situations where the subject matter is considered hurtful. The subject of guns makes people uncomfortable, so it falls under the subject matter ban.
It has been determined that this limitation does not significantly infringe on the intent of the 1st amendment.)
To Keep and Bear Arms
Amid all the hubbub surrounding Sen. Dianne Feinstein's "assault weapons" ban, there are still everyday stories of average law-abiding citizens using firearms to defend themselves and others from evil -- or in this case, serious harm. An 11-year-old boy was riding his bike in a Washington, DC, neighborhood when he came upon three pit bulls. The dogs pounced, mauling the boy.
Fortunately, a neighbor saw what was happening, grabbed his handgun and rushed out to shoot one of the pit bulls. A DC police officer patrolling nearby on a bicycle heard the shot, and came to the boy's aid as well, shooting the other two pit bulls. The boy's injuries were severe, but he will survive, thanks to the quick action of this neighbor.
However, the hero is under investigation for violating local gun laws -- discharging his weapon while not on his own property. No word yet on whether charges will be filed, but DC's gun laws are what put children at risk.
I received this, interesting read.

Ted Cruz’s Presidential Eligibility Already an Issue Just days after he was sworn in as a new U.S. senator, Texas Republican Ted Cruz already is making waves in Washington — and creating another “birther” controversy. The mainstream media initially gave little or no coverage to presidential candidate Barack Obama’s failure to produce a birth certificate, then lambasted those who questioned his eligibility for the White House. But the press is already bringing up the question of Cruz’s eligibility for president — which suggests that Democratic sympathizers are worried about his possible run for the White House in 2016. Obama was born in Hawaii to an American mother and a Kenyan father, although some questioned his Hawaiian birth. Cruz was born in Canada to an American mother and a Cuban father who were working in the petroleum industry, and he lived in Canada for four years before his family moved to Texas. The Constitution’s Article II states: “No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President.” The 14th Amendment granted citizenship to anyone born in the United States, but a 1937 law passed by Congress also granted citizenship to children born to American citizens outside the country. That would seem to clearly qualify Cruz for the presidency, but it hasn’t quieted the controversy. Politico on Monday ran a story headlined “Ted Cruz draws presidential buzz, but is he eligible?” adding that he has “the aura” of a future contender. “The problem is, no one knows what a natural born citizen is,” said University of California, Davis law professor Gabriel Chin, who argued in 2008 that John McCain was not eligible to be president because he was born in the Panama Canal Zone. “There’s nothing definitive legally.” Harvard Law School law professor Laurence Tribe, an adviser to Obama, said Cruz should prepare a thorough explanation of his eligibility to put the issue at rest: “I’d need to know more, but it certainly doesn’t sound like a sufficient explanation.” And University of Pennsylvania law professor Kermit Roosevelt told Politico that Cruz’s “birthright citizenship derives from his parents, and the question is, does that fit with the definition of natural born citizen?” Cruz’s primary opponent in the Senate race last year, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, brought up Cruz’s Canadian birthplace in a campaign ad, and his Democratic opponent Paul Sadler said in an interview: “Rafael Cruz — ‘Ted,’ that’s what he goes by, his real name is Rafael — was born in Canada.” Cruz spokesman Sean Rushton stated that Cruz is “a U.S. citizen by birth,” but declined to elaborate on the issue, saying the new senator is concentrating on his work ahead in Congress. And Cruz has already made a splash as senator, trumpeting his opposition to gun control and Obama’s choice of Chuck Hagel as Defense secretary, charging that Obama is “high on re-election.”

The BIG Lies
"I just wanted to take a minute to explain to everyone what we were able to achieve this week. In the face of looming deadlines that would have taken a big chunk out of everyone's bottom line, you know my top priority has been preventing a tax hike that would have hit 98 percent of all Americans in 2013, because the last thing middle-class families could afford now would be to pay upwards of $2,000 more in taxes this year. ... We've stopped that middle-class tax hike." --Barack Obama, who actually did hike taxes on most taxpayers.
"[I]f you look at my track record over the last two years, I cut spending by over a trillion dollars in 2011." --Barack Obama, who presided over increased spending of $147 billion in 2011.

This is an article about passwords but I thought Pick 4 players might jump on some of these numbers:
....Berry says a whopping 26.83% of all passwords could be guessed by attempting just 20 combinations of four-digit numbers (see first table). "It's amazing how predictable people are," he says.

From a newsleter:
Gifts for family
One of the most important of the opportunities that will disappear is the ability to make tax-exempt gifts to family members of up to $5, 120,000.
On January 1, 2013 this tax exemption amount drops to only $1 million.
What that means, in effect, is if you have a significantly sized estate, you now have an opening to pazss down some of the estate to your family without having to give a large share of it to the government.
Starting next year, estate and gift taxes kick back in, with rates rising as high as 55%.

Soldiers Ordered Not To Offend Radical Islamists
Well, strap in for this news: a new military handbook has been issued that orders soldiers to avoid engaging in topics that would offend radical Islamists. So, if you thought that the United States couldn’t get any more politically correct, you were dead wrong.
According to Pamela Gellar of atlasshrugs.com: “The draft leaked to the newspaper offers a list of “taboo conversation topics” that soldiers should avoid, including “making derogatory comments about the Taliban,” “advocating women’s rights,” “any criticism of pedophilia,” “directing any criticism towards Afghans,” “mentioning homosexuality and homosexual conduct” or “anything related to Islam.”
In addition to this madness, the manual also claims that it is not the Taliban that is causing the rise in attacks by Afghan soldiers, but a lack of understanding on the part of the West.
I’m sorry–What? Soldiers are not allowed to criticize pedophilia and cannot advocate for women’s rights? Ok, here’s what this means in my book:
1. The Obama administration is trying desperately to appease radical Islamists. They think that by “playing nice” with words, somehow, the terrorists will treat us in kind. They cannot be that stupid (well…), so there must be another agenda at work.
2. By publishing manuals and regulations like this, we are weakening ourselves in the eyes of the enemy. This can only result in a stronger resolve to destroy us. It is not our actions that the enemy hates, it is simply us. They hate western culture, Christians and Jews, and they will stop at nothing to eliminate the us.
3. With this manual, soldiers are being ordered to passively support abuse of women, sexual misconduct and numerous other disgusting practices of radical Islamists. Soldiers are being forced to defy basic morality for the sake of political correctness. It’s foul.
In summary:
This is the backwards logic of the deranged Left. We are fighting an enemy, but we are not allowed to hurt their feelings. This defies human reasoning, but it fits right in with the Liberal world view. They believe that it is our fault that we were attacked on 9/11; that it is our support of Israel and our actions in the Middle-East that stirred the hatred of radical Islamists. In essence, we are the provocateurs, and they are the victims. Well, you can’t provoke the Devil. Radical Islam is an evil beast, and we are feeding it. When it grows strong, it will be our fault.
