OCKTOBERFEST 2007

CITY OF KITCHENER/OCKTOBERFEST COMMITTEE

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

The big city of Kitchener in South Western Ontario is alive every October when the Kitchener Waterloo District hosts it annual German Bavarian Festival: Ocktoberfest.   Ushering hundreds of thousands to its city streets, it offers all the traditional findings  you want at an Ocktoberfest.    From its early beginnings, Kitchener was once called Berlin, for a short time from 1912 to 1916.  It’s no wonder its ties to Germany are steep.

Running the first two weeks of October, there is no end to steins full of beer, dancing in the streets to an upbeat polka, or taking in famous German food.  Bratwurst and sauerkraut fills plates, and Bavarian themed events bring out the German in everyone.

It’s largest event is the Ockoberfest Parade, one of the largest in South Western Ontario.

Actively involving 30 local clubs and thousands of volunteers, the parade held on Thanksgiving Day truly welcomes the fall season.  The huge floats, marching bands and many crowd pleasers is a lead off to the Miss Oktoberfest pageant.  Beyond celebration, Kitchener is home to Conestoga College, University of Waterloo,  and Wilfred Laurier University.   These institutions add economic punch to Kitchener’s growing downtown, and reflects the city’s dedication to post-secondary education.

Wintariofan Lottery thanks the City of Kitchener and the Ocktoberfest Committee for hosting our draw show tonight…and doing it in a outstanding way.

_____________________________

Eight miles east of Windsor, at the southern end of St. Clair Lake is the close knit town of Tecumseh.

Connected closely to the rivalry of the War of 1812, the Shawnee Indian Chief, Chief Tecumseh lent his name to where the town now stands.  The settlement grew quickly--it has grown into a dymnamic community of 7000 people.  Tecumseh has a large French speaking population.  They work in many fields, working for the food processing sector here is big.  Carriere Foods is its major employer--and today is Tecumseh's bread and butter employing 2000 people.

Many service clubs boost community spirit too.  Tecumseh has no fewer then 10 clubs that help local residents.  Members get a chance to serve their town and benefit from both voluntary involvement and making a difference in peoples lives.  One of those, The Tecumseh Lions Club have been serving the people of South Sandwich Township for nearly 50 years.  This Fall, the Lions are rasing money for St. Ann's School's Library.  Many of the books were outdated, so the goal of raising $250,000 for a new reading program seems only fitting.  Through tonight's Wintariofan Lottery and fundraisers, the Lions Clubs wants to inspired students to get involved.  Bake Sales, a 24-relay, and school concerts are giving St. Ann's School a community feel.

Each Winter, the Lions assist the Salvation Army with food and toy drives...putting smiles on families' faces.  They actively get involved with Easter Seals, M-S, and are there to aid in local disasters when a family is displaced.

Wintariofan Lottery is overwhelmed by the dedication of the Tecumseh Lions and wishes their club continued success in their service goals for years to come.

LIVE FROM: HALIBURTON

JD Hodgeson Elementary School

 Haliburton Highlands Chamber of Commerce

Launch of 2007 "Haliburton Fall Colours"

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

The small picturesque community of Haliburton is seated 45 miles northeast of Gravenhurst in one of Ontario’s most renowned camping destinations.  Just minutes away from Algonquin Park, most people have stopped here when on route to Minden, Dwight, or Wilberforce.

Primarily a retirement town, Haliburton as a village dates back to 1864, when the first people came here and began living on the banks of Head Lake.  Head Lake today, is a popular spot.  For example, music lovers enjoy an annual concert series, the Haliburton Highlands Music Festival held each March. Plans also are underway for another  series of summer concerts in the Head Lake band shell.

The arts community is very alive.  The Haliburton Studio Tour in its 20th year, takes art buffs to many galleries and shops in the area.  Here they can see artisans, pottery makers, and painters working on real life projects.

Autumn is Haliburton’s  favourite time of the year.  It has to be Ontario’s Fall Colour Capital.  It’s bright  mosaic of fall leaves from crimson red, burnt umber, and gold fill the Highland Hills.  Special Fall Fly-In Air Trips that started last weekend, awes the photographers and many day trippers who get an eye popping view of the changing season.  Bus tours of the Haliburton Highlands take place through Hallowe’en.    Even Halibutonians are amazed at the glorious hues.    Hikes through the Highland Hills is a must.

There is no wonder why Haliburton is such a scenic spot.  Wintariofan Lottery has enjoyed its breathtaking trip to Haliburton and thanks the people of Dysart Township for sharing autumn with us tonight.

LIVE FROM: HARRISTON

HARRISTON & MINTO COMMUNITY COMPLEX

HARRISTON MINTO FAIR AND RECREATION COMPLEX RENOVATIONS

*********************************

Located in the heart of Wellington County, 45 miles northwest of Guelph is the lovely town of Harriston.

Originally founded in 1854 by Archibald Harriston, who built a sawmill and began laying out lots in the village; by 1874 Harriston was a officially town. Amalgamated now with nearby Palmerston and Clifford, its listed as the 100th largest municipality in Canada.

Harriston remains a very lively and lovely place to live and play.  Many schools such as Palmerston Public School and Norwell District Secondary School gives young students first rate education.  Students love getting involved in community events and after-school sports.  The Harriston and Minto Community Complex--a huge recreation centre is a main place for recreation and events in the township.  Two weeks ago, Harriston held its annual Fair--drawing residents to rides, farm machinery shows, quilting, and even applauding new country and western entertainment from a talented pool of local performers.   The complex recently had improvements done to its roof and rink surface, in which lottery funding played a big role.

One cute event this Summer (that brought an influx of people to Harriston) was the Canadian Redneck Games.  There competitors jumped into real wacky events including bobbing for pigs' feet, mud-pit tug of war and belly flop, and had an "eat with your hands ONLY"  rib fest.  Running for its second time this July, it was an instant hit with thousands visiting.

Wintariofan Lottery thanks the people of Harriston for highlighting this wonderful part of Ontario.

Mattawa Voyageur Country Tourism

Launch of NEW Tourism Program

*********************************

Known as the “Gateway to Ontario’s Near North”, the town of Mattawa is a pleasant community located at the junction of the Ottawa and Mattawa Rivers.  Thus, its’ name Mattawa: an Ojibway word meaning “meeting of the waters”. //

Serving initially as a logging town—it’s connection to the Voyageur Indians made Mattawa a vital hub, as it was the main center for fur trading and lumber production.   Today, it’s a town of 2400 people, who are proud of their heritage and its community events. //

Every summer since 1997, the Voyageur Days Festival is held the last weekend of July in Mattawa.  It’s organized by the Town of Mattawa and takes place behind the museum on Explorer’s Point and celebrated its’ 20th running of the event.   As part of tradition, every Sunday at dusk there is a choreographed fireworks show…a spectacle to see.  //

Wintariofan Lottery is here to launch the new Mattawa Voyageur Country Tourism Gateway.  Mattawa and nearby Bonfield, Papineau-Cameron, Mattawan, and Calvin Townships have all united to create a newly branded name in order to promote the tourist region.   With it deep rooted history to the Voyageur, Ojibway and Algonquin tribes, the area continues to preserve and house many artifacts from hundreds of years ago.  //

Wintariofan Lottery thanks Mattawa and the surrounding area for its standing welcome this week.

Special Ability Riding Institute: SARI

------------------------------

Just minutes north of London, sits the small village of Arva.    As one of the smallest places in Middlesex County, its a community with a big heart.

The village's passion can be seen in everything they do.   From a classroom at Medway High School to a farmers field, Arva's people are willing to lend a helping hand.

Medway High School has an after school partnership with SARI institute, in which students volunteer their time in grooming horses and helping those less fortunate ride them. This community connection gives students a greater appreciation for others.   Especially those with physical disabilities or afflicted with M-S or M-D.   The Special Abilities Riding Institute or SARI in short, allows participants to gain confidence and rehabilitation through horse back riding.

SARI was named after the institute's owners, The Greenburgs who had daughter who's fight ended sadly. Today, 25 years later, the SARI institute provides therapeutic horse back riding for people with special needs. Therapeutic riding has been shown to improve: balance, coordination, muscle strength, muscle tone, self -confidence and self-esteem, attention span, independence and social integration.

Throughout the past years, lottery funding has helped SARI obtain new horses and renovations to the stables.   Ten horses currently help people feel the motion of walking and boosts spirits in many ways.   Wintariofan Lottery is honoured to be apart of SARI and wishes Arva well with its community projects.

Grand Theatre

Grand Theatre's Re-opening

-----------------------------------------------------------

On the eastern shore of Lake Ontario, at the point where waters flow into the St. Lawrence  River is the historic city of Kingston.    With deep ties to confederation, its city hall was once the parliament buildings serving Upper Canada in 1844.   Canada's first Prime Minister, Sir. John A Macdonald called Kingston his home during the late 1800's and paved the way for Kingston's founding roots.

Kingston as an economic centre is intriguing.  Not only does it house Canada's four major penitentaries, it also provides work for Ontario Health, Candian Forces Base Kingston, and Queens University.    Many flock to Kingston for jobs in the service sector.

The arts community  is alive too.  Three theatre companies bring great theatre to the area.  The Domino Theatre, Theatre Five and The Grand Theatre do their best to showcase some truly memorable performances.  The Grand Theatre, the newest building gives play-goers new seats, larger stages, and first rate backstage facilities.  Through lottery grants and private investment, the Grand is definitely a Grand place.  Closed for a year to take on its new look, Kingstonians now have a state of the art performing arts centre.

Wintariofan lottery continues to support Kingston and the threatre arts...Thank you Kingston for hosting us in your new facility this week.

Tiverton Arena

Arena Renovations

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tiverton is situated halfway between Kincardine and Port Elgin, a village of 800 people who take enormous pride in their village.  A lovely village in fact, that is quite laid back and dedicated to good living.

Tiverton is near the site of Bruce Nuclear Power Generating Station.  It is the largest nuclear facility in North America in terms of output and also the second largest nuclear facility in the world, comprising 8 CANDU nuclear reactors located on the eastern shore of Lake Huron

Doing their part for the environment, there are 5 large wind turbines that power a provincial wind farm called "Huron Wind' that provides electricty for much of the area.

In another month, the Tiverton Agricultural Society will put on the annual Tiverton Fall Fair.  Running over two days, September 21st thru September 22nd, the fair gives local farmers and food producers a chance to show their harvest and compete in farm related events.  The Tiverton Arena, our draw site will be home to many displays, showing the winners of baking, quilt making, and food preservation.  Along with a midway and local talent performing, the fair truly becomes a community gathering place.

Wintariofan Lottery thanks Tiverton for sharing their part of the province with us this week.

Lansdowne Park and its vast fairgrounds (usually home to CFL’s Ottawa Roughriders) are transformed into Super EX…a huge larger than life midway and entertainment venue featuring about 8 performance stages and a giant main stage inside the stadium that will see many big acts.  Canadian Rich Little who got his start in Ottawa,  Michael Bolton, Trooper, Honeymoon Suite, and Jeff Healey to name a few.
More than 100 rides from traditional to some new crowd favorites offer the bumps and grinds one looks for at a fair.  For those interested in farm machinery and agriculture….there is numerous displays from sheep shearing to new innovations in harvesting and steam threshing.

The Super EX displays excellence in farming, allowing farmers to show their best skills in tractor pulling and who has the best cattle, poultry, produce and other livestock.    It’s no wonder why Super EX has crowd numbers in the hundreds of thousands for attendance each year.  With tons of stuff to see and do…Wintariofan Lottery recognizes the fair’s personal Motto: The Super EX is You !  We are proud to be a sponsor of Super EX 2007…and we invite YOU to be apart of the excitement of Super EX this year.

Draw #030        Draw Date: August 09, 2007

Draw Live From: MINAKI

Draw Site: New Minaki Lodge

Host/Event: Minaki Lodge Re-opening

********************************

Tucked away 45 minutes north of Kenora in the glow of Ontario Sunset Country is the majestic resort town of Minaki.  This community is truly a tourism destination in which many lodges and scenic campgrounds offer visitors an above excellent place to relax and fish.  The Winnipeg River flows through Minaki and is filled with the best pickerel, northern pike, and bass around.  Many come here for fly fishing and commute by water aircraft to get the best fishing spots.

One of Ontario’s provincially funded sites and one that is currently being rebuilt is the NEW Minaki Lodge.  A government funded site for many years to boost Ontario’s tourism in the North, the previous Minaki Lodge was struck by a huge fire nearly 15 years ago.  The fire totaled the historic retreat; a retreat that provided rustically beautiful accommodations for thousands each year since it was built in 1928.

Today, Minaki Lodge is getting its life back.    Called often “the Jewel of the North” over 55 million-dollars is being spent to bring back the Minaki Lodge we’re use to seeing.  With luxurious suites and excellent grounds, the 9 hole golf course and tennis courts are ready to open again.

The re-opening of the NEW Minaki Lodge signifies a new era in tourism for both Sunset Country and Ontario,  Wintariofan lottery is excited to be back in beautiful Minaki to assist in the Minaki Lodges’ reconstruction and ushering a new beginning for this stellar tourist region.

Draw #029        Draw Date: August 02, 2007

Draw Live From: BOURGET

Draw Site: Bourget Recreation Centre

Host: Larose Forest Revitalization Project

 ----------------------------------------------

Sittting about 45 kilometres southeast of Ottawa is the quaint police village of Bourget (bore-jet).  Primarily French speaking, it was founded by a French Roman Catholic Priest, Monsignor Ignace Bourget who came here in the early 1870’s—he found this area ideal.   The peaceful forests made Bourget a serene spot for both religious and communal living.

The Larose Forest, acres upon acres of man-made forests has been Bourget’s hidden treasure.  Before 1920, this wooded area was known as the “Bourget Desert” as settlers had logged most of the white pines, leaving an empty swath of land.   After 1920, the forest was replanted and today is the village’s most prided project.
This village of 900 wants to keep the Larose Forest alive.  Many revitalization projects throughout the year are helping maintain the look and beauty of the area.  More than 12 million-dollars so far from lottery, provincial coffers and village fundraisers are keeping the dream of Monsignors’ Bourget.
Bourget as a village is still expanding.  Many housing projects are forming in the northern part and the small business sector is growing in the heart of the community.  A small strip mall and specialty shops highlight the villages’ drive to become an active place.  The Bourget Community Centre, our Wintariofan Draw Site tonight, is a main complex for events in Clarence-Rockland Township.  It's the regions' best sporting facility.

Wintariofan Lottery is happy to draw its’ 29th Drawing from the friendly village of Bourget.

 Draw #028     Draw Date: July 26, 2007

Draw Live From: GODERICH

Draw Site: Goderich District Collegiate Institute

--------------------------------------------------------------

Goderich, often called “The Prettiest Town in Canada”, is located on Lake Huron at the mouth of the Maitland River.   The history of Goderich is tied closely with the Canada Company, a chartered group that in 1826 was set out to colonize lands for settlers.  The town also became known for its geometric downtown, in which the town’s core was laid out as an octagon.  Eight streets flow into a traffic circle, a unique fashion for motorists.

Today, Goderich remains an important hub in Huron County.  Nearly 8,000 strong, it’s big industry is Salt Mining and most dinner tables in Ontario likely use salt mined here at SIFTO SALTS.   One-point-five million tons of rock salt are produced annually.

Goderich’s people are very friendly.  Most enjoy the vibrant sunsets and laid back quality of life the nearby beaches offer.  Three elementary schools and one high school, Goderich District Collegiate Institute offers the community the educational tools they need for post secondary education.  It is also the third largest high school in Canada, built in 1841.  The Huron County Museum now uses the original school house as part of its museum operations—telling the story of Goderich’s past.

One of Goderich’s pioneers John Galt, who named Goderich, saw this as a dream town.  Today it is charming and thriving.  He would be honoured to know that Goderich has lived up to its name.

Wintariofan Lottery is honoured to be visiting Goderich this week: A Pretty Place in Ontario !

 Draw #027     Draw Date: July 19, 2007

Draw Live From: MIDLAND

Draw Site: Sainte-Among The Hurons

--------------------------------------------------------------

In the heart of the Huronia tourist region, close to the banks of Georgian Bay is Midland.  A town of over 16,000 people that grows to over 100,000 when Summer arrives.  The beaches in this part of Ontario are filled with vacationers taking to the pristine blue waters and miles of clean sandy beaches.  Both sail and power boaters find the waters here irresistable.  Many marinas, including the Bay Port Yachting Centre is accessible by both road and water.

Midland was first settled by French Jesuit missionaries in 1639...who made home here at Sainte- Marie Among The Hurons.    Now a living museum, Sainte-Marie Among The Hurons depicts Missionary life in the 17th century.  Martyr's Shine, on site is a Roman Catholic Church  commemorating the Canadian Martyrs--that included eight  missionaries from Sainte-Marie, who were martyred during the Huron-Iroquois War back then.   The Indian Reserve outside the Huronia Museum had a fire recently, now work with Tourism Ontario is underway to reconstruct the burnt areas.  Open to public still, lottery funds are helping to renovate and restore the hollowed grounds.

Today, you can still retrace the footsteps of those missionairies--and the aboriginals who lived a very basic life.  It remains one of the provinces most endearing projects, an attraction that Tourism Ontario notes as a must to support.

Wintariofan lottery is delighted to support Sainte-Marie Among The Hurons in Midland.
