Winning Powerball lottery tickets sold in California, Florida, and Tennessee

Final jackpot total of $1.5864 billion will be split 3 ways

How would you react if you won?

By Todd Northrop

The largest lottery jackpot the world has ever seen has been won Wednesday night by three tickets sold in California, Florida, and Tennessee.

Since the initial jackpot estimate was set to $1.3 billion early Sunday morning, the Powerball lottery jackpot was raised two more times before the Wednesday drawing, and by the time all the sales were totalled at draw time, the jackpot stood at a faint-inducing $1.5864 billion — that's $1,586,400,000.

The lump-sum cash value for Wednesday's drawing was just a hair shy of $1 billion, with the final tally standing at $983.5 million

The Powerball winning numbers for Wednesday, January 13, 2016, were 4, 8, 19, 27, and 34, with Powerball number 10. The Power Play was 2.

Wednesday's Powerball jackpot was the accumulation of 19 consecutive drawings without a grand prize winner over a two-month stretch.  The jackpot run-up started as a $40 million grand prize on Nov. 7, 2015.

California Lottery spokesman Alex Travesta said the jackpot-winning ticket was sold at a 7-Eleven in Chino Hills, about 25 miles northeast of Anaheim.

People cheered and took photos in the store's parking lot Wednesday night. A store employee said the 7-Eleven had sold about $12,000 worth of tickets on Wednesday.

"I'm really happy," said an employee of the store at 4092 Chino Hills Parkway, which will receive the maximum bonus of $1 million. "It's very good news."

The three winners probably got very little sleep Wednesday night, as they try to process winning the world's largest lottery jackpot ever.

Are the winners running around the house screaming?  Are they calling their family?  Or maybe calling their boss to quit their job?  What are they planning to do with all that loot?

What is the first thing you would do?

Fortunately, even if you didn't win the jackpot, the Powerball game still offers another 8 ways to win lower-tier prizes.

In addition to the jackpot winners, a whopping 81 lucky players matched the first 5 numbers, but not the Powerball, for a $1,000,000 prize: 4 from Arizona, 12 from California, 3 from Connecticut, 12 from Florida, 2 from Georgia, 2 from Illinois, 1 from Indiana, 1 from Iowa, 2 from Kansas, 3 from Kentucky, 1 from Louisiana, 3 from Maryland, 2 from Massachusetts, 5 from Michigan, 2 from New Jersey, 5 from New York, 2 from North Carolina, 3 from Ohio, 1 from Oklahoma, 3 from Pennsylvania, 2 from Rhode Island, 1 from Tennessee, 4 from Texas, 2 from Virginia, 2 from Washington, and 1 from West Virginia..

Of all the second-prize winners, eight tickets — one of the tickets sold in Arizona, one from Florida, the ticket sold in Iowa, one from New Jersey, both tickets from North Carolina, the ticket sold in Tennessee, and one ticket from Texas — were purchased with the Power Play option for an extra $1.  Because they purchased the Power Play, those particular tickets are now worth $2 million.

The California second-prize winners will each receive $638,146 this drawing, because by law California awards all prizes on a pari-mutuel basis, meaning the prizes will change each drawing based on the number of tickets sold and the number of tickets that won at each prize level.

934 tickets matched four white numbers plus the Powerball and won $50,000. Of those tickets, 107 were purchased with the Power Play option, increasing the prize to $100,000, and 141 were sold in California, where the prize was $13,903 this drawing.

The odds to win the Powerball jackpot were 1 in 292.2 million.

Officials with the Multi-State Lottery Association, which runs the Powerball game, had said they expected more than 85 percent of all the possible number combinations would have been bought for the drawing.

Had no one matched all of the numbers drawn lottery officials said the next jackpot would have reached $2 billion.

Do not Forget 81 players matched the First 5 Numbers ,they only missed Number 10.

As a lottery player,I understand how it can be very Frustrating for anyone amongest the 81 players, who might have selected Number 9 or Number 11 as the Powerball number.

Especially now that the jackpot was $ 1.5 Billion.

I hope that Ridge did win either now or earlier.  That would be an amazing thing for him.

Congratulations to all the winners in this drawing - and quite frankly I am very happy I do not live in California holding a 4+1 winner - 12+K$?  1 ball off and it goes from a 1/3 share of 1/5+B to 12+K?  ouch

Highest top cash value too of ~$371 million. The infamous drawing in which MUSL advertised $600 million annuity, but paid out less. I suspect MUSL was extra careful in their projections lately, because, while the FL incident isn't well known, some have noticed, and the media would have pounced on the issue.

out of 81 ,12 players played in california! to me it appears california is home to lottery players who have master's degree from "the university of hard knocks",one of the jackpot winner's is also from california.

OK that is not such a big deal now. Sleep LOL I said in a post that I doubt there would be more than 3 winners so at least I got that prediction right. How would I react? I would just be like "cool" and go back to doing what I was doing Lol! I would be kinda glad the attention would be split 3 ways and not just be on me. I am just glad I did not spend much on this and no longer have to keep spending $2.00. I plan on winning cash for life anyway soon and almost did now twice. ($1,000 a DAY for LIFE $365,000 annually) After taxes about $273,000 a year which is plenty for me. Or the Mega Millions as well. Many will play now as it is more of a relief and less burden and you won't be so famous if you win $40 million. But it makes more sense cost wise to play MM's for better odds and only paying half as much. I would love to win the $40 million though next draw so I would be completely anonymous while they are still looking for the $1.6 billion winner. LOL But the cost is not worth it as much as the MB now. So they would be smart not to change it.

3 winning tickets? but the pot goes to Ca.  did the same person play 3 copies of the same numbers? or are we waiting for 2 more winners?

I did not say I won I said I plan to and almost did twice. LOL I was a Platinum member way back for awhile but someone bought it for me as a gift because they liked my posts. But if I had that much money being Platinum would not do me much good as I don't use this site much except for occasional posting and when jackpots get big. I would be on even less then. I have also contributed here for about 11 years now. If I won big I might upgrade then especially if something appeared to help me win but I would not feel obligated to just because I won. I spent the money not anyone else.

Truly happy for all winners but really wanted to see what the outcome would have been if there was only one winner. Meaning would that person have done something significant to help his fellow man or just keep it all for him or herself and their families. Helping their fellow man refers to putting money in cancer or some other needed medical research, helping to feed and provide shelter for the homeless etc. All these things may have been a consideration if one won the jackpot but may not be if the jackpot have to be shared three ways!

Congrats again to all winners!

81 lucky players matched the first 5 numbers for a $1,000,000 prize the article says.

But only 8 who played the Power Play are technically millionaires because of the taxes but the lottery likes to publish articles saying they've created 81 millionaires which hypes people up to play.  Heck they don't need to hype me up, I'd play anyways just show me the lottery store!

Anyone had a chance to win the jp. I hoped it would be more winners splitting the pot but at least it wasn't one person.

I wonder how many tickets were sold this time around?

Odds of 1/292M you'd think it would have gone out last time. I'm happy it went out finally, it's over...for now.

I hope many people learned a lesson...for those that went overboard and are fuming/cursing/crying this morning...how

about keeping everything in perspective next time? States love the big money making games. People go nuts and forget

the odds....and some spend too much chasing amazing odds.

I hope someone here made out alright.

Hmmm.

"Winner, winner, chicken dinner!"

California has the biggest population (around 39M peeps) therefore it's never surprising that someone wins from CA.

Florida is ranked number 3 on the list (around 20M peeps) in population, again not a surprise here. (note that New York has around the same amount of peeps)

and

Tennessee is ranked number 17 on the list (around 6.6M peeps) defied the odds both winning again under these new odds of 292M to 1 on November 4, 2015 ($144.1M annuity but took the Cash $89.7M) and then of course tonight!

Tennessee is the fairy tale story of recent.

Just for fun if someone won out of the U.S. Virgin Islands then THAT would be very impressive as they have just over 100,000 peeps living there.

Well, it's simply not true. TN is an anonymous state if you're not a freaking dummy.

This is now the fifth Powerball jackpot winner in the state of Tennessee. The first 3 winners did not even try to be anonymous. The 4th winner did and he/she is sure anonymous!

I spell out what they did because I had already brainstormed the same approach. I laughed so hard as I realized what they did.

They used a trust within a trust.

The first trust simply claims the prize and then distributes the win to the 2nd Trust. To keep your win as private as possible, the lawyer is the trustee or even 3 wealth managers for the first trust, your name is hidden inside the 2nd trust. The lottery does not have your name.

This technique may as well be nicknamed 'Reporters, Go to Hell' I dare you to find any news story that has a trust within a trust winner's identity. These winners may as well not exist and that's how it's done folks.

Most people don't think through the benefits of using advanced legal entities and trust structure strategies. You have to seek out a special lawyer who knows all the ins and outs and is well practiced in this area of law.

Must winners go to the lawyer across the street to them and are uninvolved and aloof to towards using such nuance legal maneuvers to claim a jackpot.

Whether you realize it or not, right now, there are stealth and covert lottery winners in America. The reporters don't know. The friends don’t know. The extended family doesn’t know.

You, too, should claim that way if you can. Don’t let anyone know.

The FL/CA winners are screwed, I give you that.

All three states that had the Powerball winners do not tax lottery winnings.

I don't know why that pleases me,...but it does.  I guess it's the notion that states who tax lottery winnings are "double-dipping".  They profit from the sales of tickets, then have their hand out again when someone wins in their state.

"Can the winner of a large Lottery prize remain anonymous?

It is the policy of the Tennessee Lottery to treat such information as a public record. The Lottery will therefore disclose the name, home state and home town of winners if a request is received for such information."

source:

https://www.tnlottery.com/faq/faq.aspx

Jacintasc, understands this a state law issue. (TN allows this while the other two don't.)

Whiteballz, Stop taking lotteries words for the ever little thing (If they told you the sun is blue would you take them at their word for it?) and understand they are not your friends or have your best interest at heart.

They won't walk you through the way to get around the media finding out who you are or how to bypass the states "public record" laws.

Did you even check to see if the TN anonymous winner my post has a ref link to is even real? That disproves what you just posted man!

That is lawyer speak that you're mistaking for hard fact here. Let me walk you through it.

"Such information" Is your main clue. What information is inside a trust the lottery has to give to the public?

The trust won’t have your name, yet the first trust will claim the cash for you and the lottery will only have the info that's inside first trust papers given to them. They only have the legal record of the first trust.

The first trust, like all trusts, includes three types of people: (1) grantor – that is the lawyer, the creator of the trust (again the lawyer or even wealth managers. (2) trustee – this is also the lawyer or wealth managers, the person who manages the trust and (3) beneficiary – again, this would only be the name of the 2nd trust, that then receives the money.

The lottery only knows 2 things. The lawyer name and or wealth manager's name, and what the "name" of 2nd trust is.
Not who is in the 2nd trust. They have no clue who the " beneficiary" is in the 2nd trust. You are hidden. They don't have that info, there is no public record with your name. The trust "names" and the lawyer are on the public records only. You have circumvented the public records. Wink

Reread my first post again and try to comprehend the info am giving you here.

P.S. Have you ever seen Nesting Dolls? This is what going on:

The lottery office, the FEDS, the IRS, your state and local government all know who you are. If someone wants to find you they will find you. If you owe back taxes they will be taken out, likewise for student loans, child support, money judgements against you, etc. Why hide it? I would be there for the cameras saying "I'm rich!"

69 actually, since lower tier Powerball prizes are para-mutuel in California. The 12 California winners lost out and will only receive $638,146 before taxes. Still a bundle though.

It's even worse for CA 3rd tier winners who instead of receiving $50,000 will only get about 1/4 that, before taxes: $13,903.

While 2nd & 3rd tier California winners are getting short-changed, they still won far more than the vast, vast majority of other Powerball players.

A great example of a totally clueless reporter irresponsibly writing an article.  I like how the facts about Eddie Tipton are just woven into things that have nothing to do with him.  Really bad reporting.  Hopefully whatever website published that does not have a big readership so they don't mislead too many people.

Wouldn't this "nested trust" strategy give up a lot of the winnings in taxes?

Say the prize was 254M annuity, so about 152.5M lump sum...

Assuming no state tax on lottery winnings and no contributions to charity and at todays tax rates...

The first trust will pay 39.6% in Fed tax, so 60,390,000 in taxes and 92,110,000

The grantor of the trust (assuming the lawyer that "claims" the prize for you) will need to pay a 40% gift tax to gift the money to the second trust

I'm assuming the lawyer will not use his personal estate tax exemption on you, so...40% of 152.5M again...leaving about 31,110,000

Now once the money goes to the 2nd trust, depending how you distribute the money, you will be taxed at your tax bracket for the money, so if you decide to take it all out of the second trust in one distribution that would leave you about $18,666,000...

Obviously I'm just simplifying the taxes here, and there could be some ways to shelter some of this (ie. a CLAT or CRAT), but in the end it seems a lot to pay for the anonymity...

Thinking the LLC's may be changing now too.  I was watching CBS this morning and they had a story about people here in the U.S. buying luxury real estate through LLC's to hide not only their identities but the money they are using.  There is a lot of fraud involved and LLC's and shell companies is another way for them to hide their evil ways.

Now I am not saying being a lottery winner and using a LLC to protect your identity is illegal but once the government gets involved, things are going to change.

The wording is not irrelevant as the top prize is GUARANTEED to be paid to more than 1 ticket.

No one person can win the "jackpot" unless they buy ALL tiickets with that numer which would cost them a fortune whereas with Powerball you can win 1.5B$ for a 2$ investment.

Good point. And crazy thing is the owner didn't even have to buy a ticket - simply sell the winner. Plus the owner, as with other lottery retailers, receives commission for selling tickets. A win, win for them. While California match-5 players got short-changed again.

These winners are to the media what enemy radar is to these aircraft:

Too bad those anonymous winners will not be safe from the REAL threats their family and friends. LOL I always said that the anonymous option in only some states is BS, either make it all or none. Every state should be equal. But as I said the biggest issues are with family and friends not strangers most of the time. Family and friends will bleed many dry in no time. But they need to reveal winners if they want to keep the integrity of the game intact. If people are paying to win they deserve to know the winner. So really I don't care who knows as I said I am not hiding from anyone. Is stick to myself mostly which is how I like it so I won't have any issues. So either way, bring it!

I may congratulate a member though on here and have done that before for smaller win, as they have done for me. Most are just casual players who have no clue and are not members on lottery forums. Would be nice to actually see a member here win the big one, it should be me soon!

Even split 3 ways and after taxes it's going to be close to 200 million each and I think at least 28 people

won a $1 million prize.  Lots of winners so good for them.

Well it is 3 "tickets" we don't know though if it is 3 people total, could have been a pool on one or more tickets.

Look at the total sales for those states, they are sometimes triple that of most.  It's a numbers thing and

the big surprise was TN.  I was a bit shocked someone from NY did not win.

Guys, play a couple lines and hope for the best.  The reset is 40 million with a cash value of 24.8 million

so even after taxes it's enough to set one up for life.  $15 million is still a lot full of money, if you need

i think any jackpot is a good jackpot. I'd be happy to win the minimum! What a helpful tool it would be to make life easier, so I could spend more time doing what I enjoy doing! I'd have no problem "living within my means" with 15 million!

Nope, F them. LOL I don't congratulate any of them and never have, they would not me either. Also in 11 years on here not ONCE did I ever see one show up on here and say "Thank you!" LOL All the winners most likely never read any congrats posts on here. They would not give a crap about this site or anyone on it and you would never see a dime. So if it's not me I could care less. I may congratulate a member though on here and have done that before for smaller win, as they have done for me. Most are just casual players who have no clue and are not members on lottery forums. Would be nice to actually see a member here win the big one, it should be me soon!

I almost won the Cash 5 matching 4 out of 5 when it was up to $1.6 million. I got to feel that "all my numbers are matching" feeling it was great until the last one did not match. Was a crazy combination too. 05 07 08 09 30. Winning numbers were 07 08 09 14 30. I was happy but pissed as the difference between that one number was $220 and $1.6 million. I was ready to announce it on here too lol.

I almost hit Megamillions on Dec 30, 2014.

I had purchased a $5 QP ticket. I had the mega # on 1st line, one of the 5 #'s on the second and the other 4/5 numbers on the fourth line.

If they were all on the same line, I would have won $172 mil. I ended up with $501

I'm with ya on various states creating winners!

Since on average when jpots are 200 mill, one winner will catch the big one. So with 700 mill cash, three seems to be in alignment for winning the jp.

It was great news to read of sooo many million dollar ticket holders! Not to shabby to get that chunk.

I figure the $6 i vested isn't enough to be distraught over. Particularly when I think of everyday players who toss fifty dollars down on a number for days ... and never blink an eye or win. Perhaps its perspective of understanding that happiness isn't contingent on winning or losing. Life has better plans to entertain.

Hward0401, I see your new member here (first post) welcome to lottery post!

You seem to have an expertise about our tax code, So I keep this short if you doubt my line of thinking, why not just use a limited liability company (LLC) as a pass-through entity and collect as the trust on the other side? TN does allow an LLC to collect. (I call checkmate.)

I think I spent more than $90, for this draw (but including all week - both mms and both pbs).

So glad it's over. I will try and forget it. In the meantime, I remain a prisoner in my state.

Even the no-tax state I go to weekly is not the paradise that the main jp would have bought me.

RL-RANDOMLOGIC

Beware of mistakes

The overall odds of winning a prize is 1 in 24.87 so we can estimate the number if tickets sold by state.

CA. 24.87*3,675,988 = 91,421,821 tickets at a cost of $182,843,642

FL. 24.87*2,111,197 = 52,505,469 tickets at a cost of $105,010,938

TN. 24.87* 526,451 = 13,092,836 tickets at a cost of $26,185,672

Estimated tickets cost of the three states where a winning ticket was sold $314,040,252

Tennessee was by far the biggest winner as they receive 1/3 of the JP and only make up 8.3% of the

total sales of the 3 states that had a winner. CA residents paid the most for the win at 58.2% of the 3.

This leaves FL with around 33.4% for their win.

Other States with large ticket sales

TX. 24.87*2,289,864 = $113,897,835

NY. 24.87*2,033,682 = $101,155,342

PA. 24.87*1,187,351 = $59,058,838

NJ. 24.87*1,135,441 = $56,476,835

TN. Won on a wild card so to say, I love underdogs. WTG TN.

RL

P.S. I think the total wins are based on the last drawing but not sure.

I agree with you Solewinner, in NJ we have a top State income tax rate of 10.8%. When you add that to the top federal income tax rate of 39.6% it adds up to 50.4%. In NJ that would net the winner approximately $163.68M after taxes ($330M minus 50.4% = $163.68M).

New Jersey Lotto tax is said to be just 3%.

OK, first the Fed tax 39%, (which is 25% + the rest)

So, does this 3% agree with what you've calculated?

sirbrad's avatarsirbrad

And that is why you don't "buy every combination for $584 million" like many said. Even if it were possible which it isn't in that short amount of time, they would have lost $400 million on the 3 way split. That is why people with that kind of money don't make dumb decisions like that. They don't need to and they are rich for a reason they are smarter than that.

No, I'm talking about the tax rate on jackpot analysis, on usamega.com.

On the page, where it lists states like Florida, and California at 0% tax rate.

How do the tax rates on that page figure into the total tax.

If there's no cut/dried answer, it's like I've figured about asking 10 different people about the tax issue, and getting 10 different answers.

Or is usamega.com in error?   I figure they can't be since others agree that Florida, California and a few other states are at 0% lotto-tax rate.

If so, then what's worse, is that the IRS is happy with whichever answer when filing taxes.

That is the not the problem or how much was spent, but all the hype and buzz if wanting to win the first billion dollar jackpot. I got used to not winning the regular jackpots long ago but this one was a lot more exciting. I am talking about when the jackpot gets enormous like this one, or several hundred million and everyone on here is posting and exciting about winning it then it ends as is usually does with no one on here winning it. I was disappointed bt not depressed as I said I got used to it long ago. I still win smaller games. But the big jackpot is what I truly need. I was more depressed recently when I missed the Cash 5 by one number and matched 4 out of 5. Would have had $1.6 million but instead got $220. I won something though but certainly not the same feeling. Just like matching all 5 for $1,000,000 would be great bit no way would it be the same as hitting them all for over a billion. Those winners will always be thinking of that as that is a DRASTIC difference between one ball. The rest of their lives they will always think about "if only I matched the powerball. That is worse yet as they beat high odds only to miss the powerball.

Lotteries withhold 25% federal tax immediately along with state tax (and even city tax in some instances), if any. However, that's simply withholding much like how employers withhold taxes from one's paycheck. The actual tax due isn't determined until the winner files their taxes. If the winner simply declares the winnings as straight income, the total tax due is relatively simple to figure out. The highest earned federal income tax rate is 39.6%, so the winner will owe the IRS up to an additional ~14.6% at tax filing time.

To reiterate, the 25% federal tax withheld immediately by the lottery is most often not sufficient, since the highest earned income tax bracket is 39.6%. The winner will owe additional tax, and hence, that confusion that can result from relying on the USA Mega page... Yes, the details are explained at the bottom, but it's a convoluted way of showing it. A better approach would the USA Mega page showing the max tax rate the winner could end up paying, since that's likely to more match reality.

In a nutshell, most winners will pay between 35% to 50% in tax depending on whether their home state levies tax on lottery winnings and how they accept / utilize the money. There is no simple, exact answer on what a winner will pay in tax, since it depends on their individual circumstances, but there is a relatively firm answer on the maximum amount a winner could pay.

Also you got people trying to get their money back with gofundme LOL. I would never spend that much anyone who does that should not be gambling. https://www.lotterypost.com/thread/298448

With jackpot games it is expected that you will lose most of the time regardless how many tickets that you get, and how much you spend. So the smart way is only to get a few or what you can afford. I only played about $10.00 total for this one spread out on 4 draws.

Not sure if this has been confirmed, but....

"A Pomona nurse who won the record-breaking Powerball jackpot was given a ticket by her boss. The 62-year-old woman is a senior registered nurse at Park Avenue Health Care and Wellness Center in Pomona, according to a spokesperson for nursing home owner Shlomo RechnitzRechnitz bought 18,000 tickets for his employees and residents at 80 nursing homes across California. Rechnitz sent 600 tickets by mail to the Park Avenue Health Care and Wellness Center."

It also states she has 7 children of which 6 are also Nurses.

What a great story and Congrats to them if this is true! Won't take long, by tomorrow we'll know who she is.

Wow if that is true not only did she beat the odds but she had to beat the odds of getting the ticket out of those 18,000 tickets. Not only that but she got it for FREE. Now that is some LUCK! LOL Not sure I believe that one.

We had a group of 71 teachers, administrators and staffers from our local school hit 4+1. They get $700 each before taxes and had 9 instead of 19. Not sure how they'll split that up.

Wow so you were 1 white ball away from the jackpot? That would suck lol. 71 split would be no picnic either but a good amount. Or I guess plus the 3 others would be a 74 split for about $21,621,621 each before taxes on the full $1.6 billion annuity. Still would have been a great amount. Cash would be amount $13,000,000 each I think.

"A spokesman for Brius Healthcare called news media Thursday to relay the story of a nurse winning a share of the jackpot after owner Shlomo Rechnitz bought tickets for his employees.

Spokesman Josh Nass says he was told the nurse's son sent her a cellphone picture of a ticket.

But the New York Daily News reports the nurse's daughter says it was an embarrassing prank. The Los Angeles Times reports the daughter asked to remain anonymous to avoid drawing more attention to her family."

On a "what were they thinking note"  a 270 member group from Florida bought about $140,000 (each member chipping in about $500)  worth of tickets and saw a return of hardly nothing.

Just goes to show you that quantity does not always equal quality. All the TN winners spent were $8.00 for 4 tickets.

I guess the lottery gods do not like NC! Everytime i turn around somebody in Florida , New York or the Midwest or the West always wins.  Can NC get a break for once?

NC has won recently. Those states have the largest population CA, TX, NY, and FL have the most people. But NC has won and won part of the 6th biggest jackpot ever. Also TN has a much lower population and beat the odds TWICE now under the new matrix. One time that I remember but still won once lol.

Powerball: $564.1 million, Feb. 11, 2015 - North Carolina, Puerto Rico, Texas
