Lets bang out some rough numbers here.  These three people have to be hunted down and found...how much is that going to cost?

If they do get caught they will get life in prison.  Assuming  they are 25 and they live to 75 then that is 3 * 50 or 150 years in prison.

Assuming it costs 40,000/year to keep them in prison that is $6 million dollars.

So we are roughly talking about more than $6,000,000 the taxpayers of Georgia will have to pay that they probably wouldn't have had to pay if this guy did not have to release his name.

Not to mention that people may buy less lottery tickets when they associate murder with winning a jackpot and having to give your name.

More then likely the Georgia taxpayers are all ready paying for these people . They most likely get some kind of public assistance already. Therefore they're move from one list to the other. Georgia taxpayers are still paying for both. No Nod

Since it was three masked robbers, it tell me a few thing he know his murderers.  When it was over he could recognize their voices. Therefore when the children get over this trauma. When they got more stable after this crisis the children will recognize a couple of the voices too. If any one of the robbers hang around a lot or visited them a lot before this happen. After the fear, the children will recognize  where & when they heard these voices plus put a face to them. It over for them.

So if there's a home invasion of 3 perps, it's automatic that the victim knows them? Is this in some home invasion 101 handbook somewhere? Is it the wearing of masks that makes you think he knew them? I got news for you, if you watch ID or Dateline, or any criminal investigative shows, wearing the masks rarely has to do with victims knowing the home invaders. There's this little thing called the CSI effect. It's made smarter criminals. Gloves and masks are par for the course. If he could recognize their voices, he would have called them by name, the gf would have been dead also, as would the children. Visual IDs have already proved to be extremely unreliable, no one is going to prison for life for voice ID made by children. Who are you kidding?

I Agree!  Such a sad story.  I know people mourn differently but I would be in tears if that was my boyfriend/husband.  His girlfriend was on auto-play.  You're going to break down a door, kill a man and only want what's in his pants pockets? Sounds suspect.  Who knows.

They didn't want what was in his pants pockets.  He offered it to them.  They were hoping he kept money around the house, which was a good bet, actually.  Our culture LOVES to have cash money on hand.  It's a status thing.

Yes, I believe the man knew his killers and the girlfriend who ran out too. They knew he won that money and came to rob him.

Also living in a rough neighborhood is not good and he should have moved after he won that money. So sad for him and he was

        just 20 years old.

Just a month ago, the AJC ran an article on a series of home invasions being perpetrated on wealthy people in Buckhead. Now, just in case you don't know what Buckhead is, it is neighborhood in Atlanta which has touted itself as the wealthiest zip code in GA for many years running. It's one of the least rough neighborhoods one can move to, and there've been a slew of home invasions.

I said that, to say this, the victim should not be getting any blame for his own death. He could have moved to a better neighborhood and still had a home invasion scenario. They knew he won the money and came to rob him. Period. He could have moved and they would still have come after him regardless.

I might wake up early and go running.  I might also wake up and win the lottery.

The odds are about the same.

It's very sad that these things happen. When you win some decent money, your life changes forever. Security, safety must become first and foremost. The article says 3 masked men. hopefully one of them will talk.

Billy Bob Harrell shot himself when his wife would not come back to him after he had cheated on her this according to The Curse Of The Lottery show. Other internet articles make no mention of Billy Bob Harrell fooling around on his wife but they agree that his spent and gave away a lot of his money.  He only won $31 million which by today's lottery standards not a huge story. He was a Christian man so many debate whether he went to hell or went to heaven after shooting himself in the chest with a shotgun. Some may say that the lottery is a curse or attracts the bad people in society but it really depends on who you associate with and Billy definitely wasn't in the same category as this Georgia lottery winner in terms of lifestyle.

Seems to me that if they men came in masks then they didn't want the victim (just in case he survived) to be able to I.D. them. Probably people who knew him or people he owed something to.

I find it rather interesting that the Powerball has gone from the usual $60 million to $75 million as it's NEVER done that before.  Usually it starts at $40 million then goes by $10 million dollar increments until it gets to around $100 or $110 million before it starts to rise beyond the $10 million increments.  I wonder what the heck is going on???  People already buying more tickets than normal??? If so, why????

My condolesenses to the Burch Family. Which raises an important question : Do you have to show your face when picking up your cheque or forced to give press conference?  I am sticking with my Nixon mask,  come hell or high water.

Yes you do unfortunately, unless you Find a Great Lawyer that Knows what he's doing and sets it up in Trust's and goes through that to get your money which is what I would do when I win, The guy in Arizona that shared the last largest Jackpot a few years ago tried to remain anonymous for him and his family's safety, even before he was able to be prepared to collect his winnings, I think it was probably the people at the store where he purchased the ticket, had taken picture's of the front of his Home and Plastered it on the News Then their was a Picture of him on this Web Page shortly after then they had to move, they Loved their home and didn't want to move that's why they didn't want anyone to know!

Yes we're all curious and want to know who won, BUT their are so many NUT JOBS out there that can't be trusted, That's why they should change the law in many State's so you can remain Anonymous! Perfect EXAMPLE THIS YOUNG FAMILY RIGHT HERE!

My DEEPEST SYMPATHIES, YOU'LL BE IN MY PRAYER'S MAY HEAVENLY FATHER BE WITH ALL OF YOU.

I'll bet he knew his attackers.

He either bragged at work, the others were jealous.

Or a drug deal went bad.

HOW DARE YOU MORON! He had a steady Job as the story states, Drug Dealers only sale Drugs for a living! if you'd notice in the picture of him by himself, picking up the check not with his family to keep them safe, everyone knew who he was! You BLAME THE VICTIM Because he's Black so he must be a Drug Dealer? It was probably Drug Dealers that finally found out where he and his Family Lived that did this!

I thought the same thing when I checked this morning. Maybe the billion dollar jackpot created some new players?

                            Well.

Did someone pee in your Wheaties this morning?

Uhhh, again, I was just hypothesizing. Oh, I'm sorry. That word may be a tad too big for your IQ.

And, uhh, by the way, I worked with white people that had a steady job that did drugs. It's not a black/white thing. Drugs, unfortunately are prevalent (sorry, another big word) across a wide spectrum (dang, ANOTHER big word, can you keep up?) of people.

I have known and worked with many black people who I respect greatly. And many white people. I have also known and worked with many blacks, and whites who I wouldn't trust for a second. It's about character.

Oh, and also by the way. I did read the whole story. And since I am a member here, I will make comments that I do know something about.

How many lottery winners needs to be killed in the USA before anonymity is allowed in all states?
