$24 million NY Lottery jackpot claimed 2 days before it expired

New York Lottery

The mysterious purchaser of a $24.1 million Lotto jackpot came forward to claim the winning ticket — just two days before it was set to expire.

The person, who has not yet been identified, saw news coverage about how the multi-million dollar windfall was set to lapse May 25, prompting him or her to search for the ticket at home, the New York Lottery said Wednesday.

The winning ticket — with the numbers 5, 12, 13, 22, 25, and 35 — was found among old tickets nearly a year after it was purchased from Renu Corp Grocery & Tobacco in Tribeca.

The lucky winner claimed the massive prize May 23 at the New York Lottery's Beaver Street Customer Service Center in Lower Manhattan.

His or her identity will be announced pending the completion of the Lottery's security background check.

The winner had a year to claim the jackpot — or else the cash would've been returned to the prize pool for future winners.

Thanks to eddessaknight for the tip.

I was really hoping someone would! Congrats to them!

Good for them!

I could never not check my tickets for this exact reason. Million Dollar Paper in the washer or accidentally thrown out. Not on my watch. Wink

I can just hear Yolanda Vega breathing a sigh of relief and another great photo op.

So glad this will have a happy ending once and for all.

I Agree! with you Bleudog101. This is good news.

Good news for the winner and bad news for the New York Lottery. I sincerely hope this is truly legit, and not just a ploy by the "winner" to avoid sharing with a spouse{in divorce proceedings} or some other people that might have a claim at the time of purchase. People can be "creative". WE SHALL SEE!

Well, given the size of that cardboard check which was half a city block, if that did not get the winner's attention, nothing would.Money in the bank, sweet!

Let the spending begin.Dance

Draw back to waiting too long to pick up the check is that you are not earning interest on that money - the lottery is.

This could never happen to me because I dont save my tickets, and most certainly not for almost a year.  But, on the other hand I do check my tickets after the each drawing.

Yolanda gets another photo-op.  Somebody won $1 million on Powerball there last night.

I hope the winner takes the cash value option or the lump sum.
