Powerball winning ticket sold in Saturday's $245.6 million drawing

Powerball

A single ticket sold in New York state won Saturday's Powerball jackpot worth $245.6 million, lottery officials announced early Sunday.

The winning ticket was sold at the Stop & Shop, 2754 Hylan Boulevard, on Staten Island, according to the New York State Lottery's Web site. There was no immediate word on who holds the winning ticket.

Also Saturday there was a winner in Florida of a secondary prize of $2 million and a winner in Georgia of a $1 million prize.

Saturday's winning Powerball numbers were 5, 43, 56, 62, and 68, with Powerball number 24. The Power Play multiplier was 2.

The lump sum payment before taxes will be about $147 million for the winner of Saturday's jackpot.

Because there was a jackpot winner, the amount resets to $40 million for next Wednesday's drawing.

The last big payout occurred when a single winning ticket worth $150.4 million sold in Oregon won on June 21.

Powerball is held in 44 states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

A $2 ticket gives you a one in 292.2 million chance at joining the hall of Powerball champions.

The drawings are held at 10:59 p.m. Eastern Wednesdays and Saturdays. More information about Powerball, as well as Mega Millions, can be found at USA Mega (www.usamega.com), a website devoted to the two huge multi-state lottery games.

Personally, I can understand why many Lottery Post members are saying, "Why wasn't it me who won?" It is a disappointment.

Now we are curious about, "Was it a quick pick or not?" "Was it a pool?"

I count my blessings that we also have Mega Millions available to play.

Congratulations to the winner or winners!Party

This brings to mind one of those 90s used car commercials where the guy was dressed up in an outrageous outfit screaming into the hand-held microphone, "These cars are a giveaway. People are coming from neighboring states to take advantage of these super deals. Come on down and get your dream car now while supplies last."

JJ you better go up to NY, down to FL or out west to CA and get your winning ticket while supplies last.

California and New York won again. It's gotta be rigged. Why else would they win so much?   But I shouldn't complain. I knew I was going to be pot blocked, so I didn't buy a ticket. Green laugh

I didn't play either because I wait until ticket sales give a better overall chance someone somewhere will have a winning ticket. The problem of waiting is the chances (drawing sales divided by possible outcomes) of the $500 million plus MM jackpot were only slightly over 25% and Saturday's PB was under 8%.

People play hoping the jackpot will be won and they have the winning ticket. Combined the top five states in ticket sales had 38% of all the tickets sold for Saturday's PB drawing and NY and California are always in the top five in ticket sales.

*I know you're being facetious and maybe JJ and Golfer are too.

I  read this piece online which l found rather interesting.

It stated that the average Mass resident plops down $514 a year on the lottery.

Delaware & NY- $ 400 a year or $33.00 a month.

  • Source: CBSNews- July 24th 2018.- By Aimee Picchi.( Moneywatch)
  • The Mega Millions jackpot: What are the odds of winning?

* So if we spending $33.00 a month, our odds are the same as this recent winner, no more, no less.

You don't know who the winning ticket is.   How can they live happy ever after when this day in age once the ticket is signed everyone comes out of the woodwork?

Why don't you ask that Mavis woman in MA?   She claimed pb 24 hours after she had won.  She made poor choice decisions,  wanted police to watch her house.

Once you convert money (cash, credit cars payment, etc...) into lottery tickets (or any other wager) consider it gone.

Anything that returns is pure grave.

To make a bet assuming a win is economic suicide.

Artist,

There's a casino in downtown Vegas that has a heavy Hawaiin trade. On New Year's they all come up to the game with red envelopes (Hawaiins call them lee-cee money) full of hundreds that they had given to each other for presents.

The house gets most of the lee cee money.

The casino's gift shop also sells "Lucky frogs." The Hawaiins put the frogs on their chips on the table.

There was one boss that wanted the dealers to 'get the frogs too when the players lost.

Guess I'm just a sore loser---lol.   The other part of the equation is since I can't depend on my Brother is to get a friend to get the PB/MM tickets for me.  We'll see if a change of heart comes this winter.  Kind of like playing a slot machine, if it doesn't do anything @ all you get turned off by it.  Not one dollar came from PB/MM Season tickets.  Lucky for Life sputters and once in a while a small check will come.  The sad reality is can only think of one Season Ticket winner on any of Mass. tickets and that was a gift from someone and they won the top prize.

Blue,

My state lotto isn't much better. Since the beginning of April I have bought 8 Tx Lotto tickets every draw for our work pool. That's 38 draws. We won a total of $6.

The main reason I stayed with Lotto is that tickets are still $1.

Now that someone hit our Lotto jackpot, I'm moving to MM for a while.

Does Texas have ticket scanners like here in Kentucky that reads 'Sorry, not a winner' when a non-winning ticket is scanned?

$6 isn't very encouraging...

I’ve missed the back story of why you can’t just buy tickets when you want and have to rely on your bro.  A state without a lottery?  I’ve heard that such places still exist. Wink

But I guess my question would be how would you feel the next time the jackpot gets up there and you don’t have a ticket and can’t get one?  How many chances per draw do you have on your subscriptions?

Also, keep in mind not many subscription players win because subscriptions are a very under utilized lottery tool.  So the fact that few have won might just be a statistical reality because not many people have one.

I’m not necessarily feeling fatigued but I am seriously considering cutting back on PB and MM and playing more “local” games now that I have more appealing games.  We shall see if I will stick with it.

Good luck with your decision!

Stupid 1961 Federal Law prohibits interstate purchase of lottery tickets over the phone.  The only exceptions from home state are Mass Cash & Megabucks Doubler.  With the sports betting across some state lines was allowed was hoping that they lottery would be included.  Dream on.

Six states, AL, AK, HI, MS, NV & UT do not have state lotteries.

When I do buy subscriptions I have a friend get them for me and the confirmation tickets are mailed to me in KY after you enter them on-line.  Can also get the confirmation by mailing them the form that comes with each ticket.

Am a little upset with the KY lottery.  They will not be @ the KY State Fair this year.  Chip said to play @ the machines they have there and to 'frequent outside retailers' near the fairgrounds.  It is not the same, it was fun to mingle with the staff and had a wheel where you could spin for more prizes.  I did say to him that I understand it is a staffing nightmare for that many days/hours.  So am cutting back buying tickets here.

It increases your chances of having to split the jackpot with someone else. That is a negative, not a positive.

Unfortunately, the times when ticket sales are low (which increases the chances that you win the jackpot all by yourself), are when the jackpot amount is low.

This game cannot be beaten, not even close. Save your money and gamble anywhere else, like scratch-offs.
