Record $1.9 billion Powerball drawing delayed until Tuesday

Powerball

By Todd Northrop

One of the most hotly-anticipated lottery drawings of all time never happened Monday night, as lottery officials were scrambling to process the massive amount of ticket sales data generated by the record $1.9 billion jackpot.

Officials now estimate that the drawing should kick off sometime Tuesday morning. A specific time has not been set.

The delay was initially caused by one participating lottery that needed extra time to complete required security protocols, the California Lottery said.

Later, the Multi-State Lottery Association released a statement explaining that one participating lottery needed more time to process its sales and play data.

The organization explained that all 48 participating lotteries are required to submit their sales and plays before the winning numbers can be selected.

"Powerball has stringent security requirements to protect the integrity of the game and remains committed to holding a drawing that gives all players a fair chance to win," the statement said.

"Due to the length of the draw delay, it is likely that we will not know the official results of the Powerball drawing until Tuesday morning," it continued.

People across the United States have been scooping up lottery tickets at a frantic pace ever since nobody won Saturday night's $1.6 billion Powerball jackpot.

There have now been 40 drawings since Aug. 6 without a top prize winner, generating a jackpot larger than any other seen in world history.

If nobody wins the current $1.9 billion Powerball jackpot, the next jackpot will be $2.3 billion, according to the Texas Lottery.

Players will be able to find the winning numbers at both USA Mega, as well as on Lottery Post, on the players' state lottery results page.

The winning numbers will be published immediately after the delayed drawing takes place.

Valid point. Got a knot in my stomach at the possible shenanigans being perpetrated by the unnamed lottery participant/state/territory . Wonder how many "test" drawings they will perform?

Artist77's avatarArtist77

But isn't there usually a slight adjustment to the final jp  total when it is unusually large? After the numbers are drawn.

I bet it is a very large state that delayed the drawing..

I give up

what if nobody won?

Lol,  and they say is not rigged . They are working on which combinations to drop. Do you think they will hand  a billion dollars to some peasant, I don't think so.

powerball seems to pull this stunt about delaying drawings

Sounds to me like California is the state that may have had technical problems and could not process security protocols.

As a retired data processing professional (I worked for IBM for 32 years in an IT department located inside of  one of IBM's largest datacenters containing every type/kind of computer hardware that had software executing on them from PC's to mainframes) I'm NOT surprised that a computer could be overwhelmed and crash due the volume of data to be processed.  Add to that that we neither know the age of nor the stability of both the hardware and software running on any machine that may have failed.  Nothing says that the computers any states lottery has in running their datacenter is state of the art.  It's very common for up and running hardware/software to be old and way out of date and long overdue for replacement.  Should they replace it?  Of course they should! But then the dollars budgeted to do that may not even exist.

Add to that, if it actually is California that has the problem, California is the most populated state in The United States and sells more lottery tickets than any other state in a "normal" drawing.  G5

Can the MUSL void the guilty states entries and hold the drawing for the rest of the states who did nothing wrong?   Let whichever states players sue their state lottery commission for any money they would have won from any voided tickets!!!!

I don't think Powerball is "rigged", I highly suspect someone is trying to cheat by manipulating the protocol.  Most likely in Virgin Islands or some other small municipality.

Powerball prevented the fraud and kept the integrity of yesterday's drawing by delaying it until today.

Could very well be. Puerto Rico is about as corrupt as they come. I had thought perhaps it was California causing the delay but others who chimed in said the CA lottery officials denied it was them.

It will take at least a month for the funds to be collected from every state/territory so the winner better make arrangements on getting a temporary loan to tie them over until the funds get wired if they decide to quit immediately and leave town.

Powerball777

www.kcra.com out of Sacramento has the best story on why the delay occured.  It's lottery policy to not name the guilty party that caused the delay.

I highly suspect U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, or Puerto Rico is the guilty party.  We shall see which Banana Republic is at fault!

I bet the drawing won't happen until 12 noon EST

Have to agree with you on that.

The reality is that many organizations (both public and private) have outdated/antiquated data processing equipment inside their datacenter walls.  That's very common.

And with governmental agencies that have and run "old iron" there's no way the public can ever know they do it. First of all, the public can't even see the hardware, and even if they could, there's know way of telling how old that "box" is, or the state of the software running on it.

Think of jet airliners.  You see that Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 taxing in, but just how old is it, and how many miles has it flown?  You assume it's new, but the fact of the matter is that it could be 15 years old.  There's no way of knowing.  Same thing with computers. The people that support the computer and are employed by the company know how old it is and what, if any, problems it may be experiencing but nobody else does.   G5

KY Floyd's avatarKY Floyd

"$2.04B and $997M cash option are final numbers! "

If those numbers are accurate the cash increased by $215 million and that means they sold roughly 330 million tickets. That would be the most for the entire run despite being for a Monday drawing. It also means they sold about 2/3 of the combinations, with the chance of single winner at 36.5%, two winners at 20.6%, and 3 winners at 7.8%.

It also means they sold roughly half as many tickets a they did for the (now legitimately) previous record in January 2016. In turn that makes it seem somewhat odd that the number of tickets sold  would cause a problem, even using the same  hardware they had almost 7 years ago. Maybe somebody made a poor choice when upgrading to new hardware, or maybe one of the smaller jurisdictions sold another 150k tickets and beat their previous record by 50%.

Or maybe, and I know this is crazy, it's human error that's not directly related to the  hardware capability. I'm not an expert on the equipment they're using or he specific protocols, but I suspect the same sort of problems that could cause one of the MUSL members to take about a day and a half (IIRC) to figure out if they sold a winner could cause a long delay in finalizing the sales records.

"only playing again if jackpot wasn't won "

Same here, and I expect we'll know fairly soon.  If it does roll, I wonder if the delay in the announcement will reduce sales for Wednesday, or just result in higher hourly sales?

If that's true that nobody won. Well, the Wednesday night is going to be 2.5bln.

Since they already reached over 2bln, that it must be higher then Taxes estimates as 2.3bln.

So my prediction is 2.5    that is of course if people has any trust in PB in general after today's story.
