Two $31 million Mega Millions lottery jackpots won in Massachusetts in one week

Mega Millions

Same jackpot amount won in the same state on two consecutive Tuesdays

By Kate Northrop

In just one week, two Mega Millions lottery jackpots both valued at $31 million were won in Massachusetts.

There's something in the water in Massachusetts, where a lottery player won a $31 million Mega Millions jackpot just one week after another player in the state won a jackpot of the same value.

On Tuesday, Jan. 24, one ticket won the $31 million jackpot in the multi-state Mega Millions game with the winning numbers 33, 41, 47, 50, 62, and Mega Ball 20. On the following Tuesday, Jan. 31, yet another Massachusetts player was the only ticketholder in the country to do the same. The winning numbers for that drawing were 7, 9, 18, 29, and 39, with Mega Ball 13.

Both winning tickets were Quick Picks, sold at stores about an hour and a half apart from each other.

For last Tuesday's draw, a Stop & Shop grocery store on Hannum Street in Belchertown sold the jackpot-winning ticket. The winner of this Tuesday's drawing bought their lucky ticket at Gibbs on Winn Street in Woburn, a gas station about 20 minutes outside of Boston.

Gibbs and Stop & Shop each received a $50,000 bonus for selling their respective winning tickets.

According to the Massachusetts Lottery, these two $31 million jackpots are the largest prizes won in Massachusetts since the $758.7 million Powerball jackpot was hit in August 2017. The winner of that jackpot bought their lucky ticket at the Pride Station & Store in Chicopee, which was featured in Lottery Post's video about the (then)-largest jackpots in history.

This is also the fifth time a Mega Millions jackpot was won in Massachusetts since 2002, when the game expanded and had its name changed from The Big Game to Mega Millions. Of those five wins within the past two decades, two of those wins astonishingly occurred just one week apart.

"This has been an incredibly exciting week for us in Massachusetts," the Lottery's Interim Executive Director Mark William Bracken told Lottery Post. "While we've had our share of big winners over the years, we've never seen two jackpot wins so close together. It shows that anything can happen — you never know when your lucky day may arrive."

The last time someone in Massachusetts won a Mega Millions jackpot was over a decade ago in October 2012, when a ticket sold at the AM/PM Convenience store in Hyannis split a $61 million jackpot with another ticket sold in California.

The two Mega Millions winners from this week have one year from the draw date to claim their $31 million jackpots, which must be claimed at Massachusetts Lottery headquarters in Dorchester.

I think you need to reread the story.  But this time, do it very slowly and repeat 3 times.  Then come back and delete your misinformed comment.

My mistake on same person, but the same amounts due to the jackpot had rolled from the previous draw, which happens if there wasn't a winner.

Well, according to the article, there were two different winners.

You need to re-read the article again carefully. Nowhere in the article did it say both quick pick Mega Millions tickets were purchased at the same store. One ticket was purchased at  the Stop & Shop grocery store. The other ticket was purchased at Gibbs grocery store. These two stores are an hour and a half away from each other. Look somewhere else because there is NO conspiracy as you are suggesting.

The winners have not come forward to claim it. It could be the same person but I doubt it. What a story that would be!

Good luck with that.   But too funny about the same state with the winnings.

You are an incredibly ignorant and downright dangerous person. This level of delusion and quite frankly lies are a symptom of a much larger issue. In any case, both tickets were quick picks sold an hour and a half from each other. Additionally, Massachusetts is one of the biggest states with numbers of players. It makes sense it wins a lot more on average considering a lot more people play. Your confidence while spreading misinformation and conspiracy theories as baffling as is it's not surprising. Unreal.

i get one quick pick on every jackpot and 4 of my number sets of 5,i hardly get one number now! also i wonder if they chose the multiplier?

I just tried to dream up a story about an MITer obtaining a lotto ticket printer and modifying the machine to print up a ticket with his numbers, but showing a QP, thereby masking how his/her numbers were picked.   The MITer is working with an insider to rig the pick at HQ.    The ball picking machine is rigged with magnets turned on at moment of draw.   The MITer defeats the "security through obscurity" methods used at Mega Millions HQ.

Anybody seen Jerry and Marge in Massachusetts lately? 😂

Mega-millions jackpots odds are 1 in 302 million. I've noticed several jackpot and secondary million dollar prizes hovering around the NorthEast: Maine, New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey. The two back to back wins should certainly raise eyebrows.

Who cares if it was a quick pick or not!

no one is ever gonna know who hit.

🤪 Who would have thought, the northeast (one of the largest population in the world) has a higher chance of winning, than a state in the middle of nowhere with an overall population that is equivalent to a medium size city in the northeast. I thought this website was for people who understood basic statistics and how lottery is conducted, not leftover trolls from the intellectual sewage of our country.

Artist77's avatarArtist77

Everyone has a right to be curious if it was a quickpick or not. A common question in LP and of interest now with the more frequent wins and the clustering of win locations .

I hate qps but bought one ticket and actually like my numbers.

* Never could understand the fascination with " was it a qp or self pick?" No one knows which numbers are going to be drawn, not even a machine. In chess, an engine can probably foresee the final outcome of the game after so many moves, but even it can be wrong at times. Just pick your numbers or loses and hope for the best.

The end has come for large MM jackpots.  We'll be lucky to ever see $100 million again.

Very true.

My parish has more people than the entire state of Wyoming. New York City has more people than my state. Boston has more people than the country of Belize.

Just rambling.

Thank you CEJ. I always feel badly for people who lack both creative and intellectual curiosity.  They are missing out on a lot in daily living. Intelligent people are naturally inquisitive.🤓

Who are you hitting on? You need to check the box to quote the poster you have a crush on. Or is this a general plea for someone to love you?

Rigged50

This seems too coincidental that the same state won twice, a week apart and an hour and a half distance. The anything can happen in the lottery argument sounds weak because the new lottery changes make it a practically  infinitesimally small chance for this to happen, the large jackpots testify to that fact. It seems as if they are trying to get people to buy tickets after the exasperating 1.35 Billion dollar win. I haven't purchased a ticket since that large January win due to fatigue with the Mega Millions. My state doesn't win large jackpots. These two wins are very questionable, same amount, same state, a week apart. The intellectuals in the US have been questioning  everything from lies from politicians, lies from the media, the COVID LIE; everything. I think its about time we start looking more intently at the lottery. So greed exist in everything, i.e. politicians insider trading and making millions and other corruption in other businesses etc; but no one is touching/tampering with the lottery??? Think People.

The original poster posted a bizarre unrelated "graphic" response to CEJ that was immediately deleted.  I was pretty shocked and have never seen anything like it on LP. Then posted again about his love. I think any guy would have been disturbed by it.

Certainly everyone has a right to win the lottery including members with varying "personal preferences." However LP is not that type of site. Lol

Huh is used in writing to represent a noise that people make at the end of a question if they want someone to agree with them or if they want someone to repeat or explain what they have just said. Huh is also used to show that someone is surprised or not impressed.

statistically, if you do google search on which state spend money on lottery the most, MA would come up as one of states that spend money on lottery the most. which was a surprise to my (there're a lot of smart people in MA (MIT + high tech firms. I consider MA is a brain trust of US East Coast). Smart people don't spend money on lottery. perhaps, it has to do with a lot of Italian Mafia families based in MA)

MA spends a ton of money on marketing and advertising the lottery.  Also, if people dug into the statistics, including number of tickets sold, they would see that MA was/is overdue for some jackpot and/or 2nd place (match 5 numbers) winners on both Powerball and Mega Millions.  The statistics are simply reverting back to the mean.  Unfortunately, the jackpot winners ended up winning at the lower end of the spectrum of prize amounts.  Either way, if they're smart they'll be set for life.

Massachusetts has one of the highest number of players and one of the most profitable lotteries in the nation. I'm actually surprised there haven't been that many winners in the state, and the last time a jackpot for MM won was close to a decade ago.

$31 million tonight...

I normally don't play with the jackpot so low, but I suppose I'll pick up a few QPs this morning in Wisconsin.
