Todd, you may want to correct a tiny error in the above story. About the 7th or 8th paragraph you state "Friday's $1.35 Billion Mega Millions,..." shouldn't it read $1.25?

It will probably get that high by Friday, or higher.

I got lucky. I found a pool buying tickets for the Friday Mega Millions draw that let me join.

Now I am really looking forward to the draw.

We never have jackpots this large in Canada. On the other hand, even though our jackpots are smaller, we get to keep all the money - no taxes on lottery wins.

We have the Pacific West and the Mountain West.

I am going to tilt the Palantir just a little and let it point to the Mountain West.

There is a straight line down from Montana to New Mexico. Colorado is a little out of line and kinda pushing Kansas out of the way, so because of such bullyish behavior I will eliminate Colorado.

I landed $8 with a QP and the Megaplier on it.

I will get two or three tickets for the Friday draw with Megaplier on them.

That Megaplier really upped the Texas win to $4M - it sure did make the effort worthwhile.

The other half of the states (of which i live) have less than 5M population and thats who i am talking to mainly. Outside of a few outliers our chances are ultra slim. 

Anecdotal story: A few years ago i bought a QP ticket in one town number 13 14 15 36 49 (10) and a hour and a half later I bought another ticket in the next town the numbers were 13 14 15 29 50 (3). If this is my story i wonder how many people are getting the same number sequences. If this is the case i believe the odds are higher than advertised. ALSO: When i lived in VA i was in line a guy bought a ticket in front of me i peeked at his number and i bought a ticket right after, we had 3 numbers the same. The machines are not giving truly random numbers.

* Any numbers can win, but IMO the States pouring in the lion's share of any jackpot should & must get the first round picks. l know l know it's not a popular saying, but it is what it is. I guess l just opened myself up to another slug to the chest.

Just the act of getting all the numbers in a drawing is an outlier act - if not, we would all be winning everyday.

I play lucky for life QP and get like 10 or more draws.

The last one I had for 7 straight days not even a single number hit. Got my first break on the 8th day.

I've bought multiple lines on the same ticket and had numbers repeat. If I'm buying more than one line, I don't let the terminal pick my numbers so I get a better mix.

LP has a good quickpick generator that is more random. It won me $16 on the last draw. Give it a try.

I totally get your argument on the numbers piece of it. There are more people buying or more sales and therefore the likelihood of a winner coming from there is significantly high.

On the contrary - all tickets purchased - individually have the same odds of winning and this give me comfort.

On the randomness of the terminal machines, I am not a subject matter expert, but I have had my share of repeating numbers on the same ticket. Like maybe buying five lines and having three lines with repeating numbers. Sometimes it's good sometimes it's not.

I have won in different lines on the same ticket because the numbers did repeat - when that happens am happy.

I think we all are.

clerk accidentally printed a $20 powerball earlier yesterday and i stupidly bought it and not one dollar won; could have used that to buy more mega tickets.

I have a Powerball as well. Also, Louisiana Lotto is at $1.35 million which is high for that game. I have tickets for that as well.

I would go on a tropical vacation and move out of state.

 With higher gasoline prices already on the rise again, people are leery of spending money on Mega Millions tickets. Plus it's been rolling for so long now, people are tired of spending money chasing it, and not even getting any lower tier wins to make it worthwhile.

The jackpot was raised in between drawings prior to the draw on Tuesday night.  And, they typically don't boost the jackpot amount until the day of the draw between 11 AM-1 PM EST.

So I guess the trick is to just do your thing, buy your tickets as you would any other time and the rest is a waiting game.

I would not immediately move, but my plan has always been to live in each Region of the USA for atleast 1 year.

I would go with the 4 regions demarcation - West (13 states), Midwest (12 states), Northeast (10 states) and South (17 states).

I would then live in the state that is centrally located in each region and allows me to do trips to the neighbouring states in the region.

I would also love to tour the world.

The plan is to live in each Continent for 2 years. That would be sufficient time I believe to get slightly immersed in the culture and way of life of the different countries.

But until then, I will get my QP tickets and chill.

A lot of work to get settled in from a big win may take some months after collection... Probably just going to take a few weeks to mellow out. Find a cabin up in the mountains or a trip up to New England. Then hit the trail to find land and then a specialty home contractor. I figure that will encompass a few years maybe 3-4 to get that set up. New vehicles, some toys, few hand cannons...just the basics...good stuff comes later.

Totally agree, you can't be settled a week or a month after collecting.

I would need 12 months to get all settled and another 12 to make solid decisions.

I have an outline of what I would do, but, when the win is a reality am sure there will be some loose nuts and bolts to tie.

I would prefer to rent out a place before I decide where I way to stay long term. Renting allows for mobility without the associated costs of ownership.

This places tonight's jackpot as the 4th-largest lottery jackpot in world history, and the cash option is still the 7th-largest of all time.

Looking at the top 25 list, I don't see Texas on there in the top 25 Annuity or Cash Value at all, as a Jackpot winner. New York has nothing in the top 10. PA has nothing.The current list shows winners from TN, SC and Maine in 3 of the Top 4 all time Jackpots that have been won. Annuity up $100 million, cash up $34.2 million, cash:annuity ratio down to a bit under 49%. If it rolls (about 65% chance) the advertised jackpot will start at 1.55 billion if interest rates don't change again. Cash will be $659.5 million, based on the sales estimate.

No telling if sales will be high enough, but if they are there's perhaps a 30% chance of two rolls and MM reclaiming the annuity jackpot record that PB has had since the first jackpot over $1 billion in 2016. If sales are a bit lower, maybe a 20% chance of 3 more rolls obliterating the current record by at least a couple of hundred million. Either would  probably result in the first cash jackpot over $1 billion, but there's some room to set a new annuity record and have the cash come up a bit shy of $1 billion. Maybe a fair chance, the way interest rates have been creeping up.

If someone won the jackpot in a state that doesn't tax the lottery, and they opt for the annuity - they will take home 851M.

If someone won in New York and took the annuity, they would take home 704M.
