$1.33 billion Powerball jackpot won by one ticket sold in Oregon

Powerball

Lump-sum cash option worth $621 million

Drawing was delayed by one state needing more time to process sales

Updated with area that winning ticket was sold

By Todd Northrop

Around the United States, millions of people had to wait an extra three hours last night to find out if they won the unbelievably massive Powerball jackpot, due to one unnamed state's inability to deal with the huge amount of ticket sales data.

When the drawing did finally occur Sunday morning, it turns out that just one ticket sold in Oregon matched all six numbers drawn and won the entire jackpot.

After all sales were tallied, that jackpot turns out to be worth $1.3259 billion in 30 payments over 29 years, or $621 million in cash all at once.

It took 41 drawings since January 3rd to finally produce a winner. The drawing is tied for the longest sequence of drawings in Powerball history (having occurred two other times) and the eighth-largest lottery jackpot ever won in world history.

And it all goes to one ticket sold in Oregon.

In addition to being ranked as the 8th-largest ever in world history, the final tally landed Saturday's jackpot cash value ranked as the world's 9th-largest. (The full top 25 list of annuity and cash values can be found below.)

Lottery officials said the ticket was sold in the 97218 zip code — an area of northeast Portland that includes Portland International Airport.

The largest Powerball prize previously won in Oregon was a $340 million jackpot in 2005, shared by two couples from Jacksonville, Oregon.

The Oregon winner will have a bit of taxes due on their prize, with both federal and state taxes due on the windfall. Oregon's 9.9% state income tax makes the tax bill a bit higher than most other states, resulting in either $705.3 million over 29 years, or $329.8 million in cash.

The complete tax breakdown can be found at USA Mega's Jackpot Analysis page, which provides state-by-state calculations of federal and state taxes due on each lottery jackpot, even adjusting for various tax filing statuses.

Because Oregon does not allow winners to claim anonymously, we will eventually find out who the big winner is. Hopefully they follow Lottery Post's guide for lottery winners and get a good plan together before claiming the prize.

The Powerball winning numbers for Saturday, April 6, 2024, were 22, 27, 44, 52, and 69, with Powerball number 9. The Power Play number was 3.

The Saturday Double Play drawing results were 16, 19, 56, 59, and 66, with Powerball number 14. Double Play is a game option currently available in 18 states that lets you play your numbers in a second drawing for an extra $1 per play, with a chance to win up to $10 million in cash. See How to Play Powerball at USA Mega for more information about Double Play.

Aside from the Oregon winner, there were hundreds of other significant winners in the drawing.

7 lucky players matched the first 5 numbers for a $1,000,000 prize: 1 from Arizona, 1 from Delaware, 1 from Florida, 1 from Iowa, 1 from Massachusetts, 1 from Michigan, and 1 from Wyoming.

None of the second-prize tickets was purchased with the Power Play option, which would have doubled their prize to $2 million if they purchased the $1 option.

When a Powerball ticket is purchased with the Power Play option for an extra $1 per ticket, a second-prize win is doubled and any other non-jackpot prize is multplied by the Power Play number drawn that evening. A complete list of prizes available for matching various numbers can be found on the Powerball Drawing Detail page at USA Mega, as well as on the Powerball Prize Payouts and the Powerball Double Play Prize Payouts pages at Lottery Post.

The official drawing videos can also be found on the Powerball Drawing Detail page at USA Mega.

The Power Play option is not available in California, because the fixed nature of the prize increase offered with the Power Play is not compatible with California's pari-mutuel payouts.

Also, a total of 107 tickets matched four of the first five numbers plus the Powerball to win a $50,000 prize. Of those tickets, 26 were purchased with the Power Play option, increasing the prize to $150,000, and 9 were sold in California, where the prize awarded this drawing is $36,225.

The delayed drawing was due to one unnamed state being unable to complete the required ticket sales audit that occurs before each Powerball drawing, lottery officials said.

A statement posted on the Powerball website explained, "Powerball game rules require that every single ticket sold nationwide be checked and verified against two different computer systems before the winning numbers are drawn. This is done to ensure that every ticket sold for the Powerball drawing has been accounted for and has an equal chance to win. Tonight, we have one jurisdiction that needs extra time to complete that pre-draw process."

The next Powerball drawing will take place Monday night at 10:59 pm Eastern Time with the jackpot amount reset to its starting point of $20 million.

Powerball is currently offered for sale in 45 states, plus Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays at 10:59 pm Eastern Time. Tickets cost $2 each.

Powerball lottery results are published within minutes of the drawing at USA Mega (www.usamega.com).  The USA Mega Web site provides lottery players in-depth information about the United States's two biggest multi-state lottery games, Mega Millions and Powerball.

Just checked my g mail.   $12 winnings confirmation.   Only had PB of 9; all numbers chosen by rolling my Ottolball.

My friend bought me about a week's worth of a PB and it won $7 from Indiana.   Will cash that out today.   It has two more drawings on it.

doing good NOT playing until the jackpots are $40 million.  Certainly $20 million would be nice, to me it is the principal of the 'blame it on the pandemic' mentality.  Two can play that game!

Imagine living in such an echo chamber consuming conservative media 24/7, you end up developing simple and insular world view to the point you see everything life has to offer thru your silly tribal political lens. Yuck and what a sad existence

Yes, of course. Everything is against you. Remember that you are an exceptional human being that deserves everything including a 1in 300 million jackpot prize. The audacity of the world to not give you what you rightly deserve. Ugh. It's all a conspiracy 🤣

We still have mega millions folks....

It's grown incredibly since the last big jackpot.....

If it continues on this pace it will get to 1.3 billion in 1/2 the time it took Powerball to get there.

Hi Todd!

Do you know if the lottery officials will ever return to the jackpot starting at $40M ?

They raised the price of the tickets and $40M was an incentive.

The pandemic dropped it all back to $20M but we are now passed the pandemic but they have yet to go back to a $40M starting jackpot....

I doubt it, unless it's part of a larger effort to revamp the game altogether.  We explored this two years ago in an interview with the then-head of the Mega Millions group: https://www.lotterypost.com/news/340204

This past week, I matched Zero on the Tuesday and Friday MM and matched Zero on the Monday, Wednesday and Saturday PB.

But you know what, I am still in it.

Will head out and buy my QP for PB - one line three draws and one line two draws for MM.  As always adding the extra $1 - total ticket cost is $15 for the week.

A 5.9M win after taxes is a life changing amount for me.

Hitting 2nd prize would be life changing.

Onward we go, one draw at a time.

Yes, I hear they're giving money away on Monday too.  Also Wednesday and Saturday.  Always enough to change one's life in some positive way.

I think we got so blinded by the billion dollar jackpots people think that 1M is loose change.

For the second prize winners that live in a state that doesn't tax the lottery that's 630K after taxes.

630K won't necessarily buy you a mansion or a yatch, but 630K can leave someone debt free and a little towards retirement.

630K is not an amount to be frowned upon.

That's my attitude towards the game.

Mine too!  I could get a lot accomplished on a personal level with that.  I think of the bigger jackpot wins as being "me and my circle of loved ones".  The bigger jackpots mean considerable time going into careful management.  Smaller = fewer complications.  (usually, of course)

I have two bachelor's degree one statistics and one business finance. I love what I do but I do play the lottery hoping for the charlie buckett scenario where I can live in financial freedom why I'm young like many of us. I do believe in truly random with the lottery game and game of chance and that only applies if everything is truly fair. Now my question is from all the courses I've taken and understanding the odds 1-302 Million and every ticket have a random fair chance why is it one ticket that wins at top and you have not just 302 million tickets purchased across the country to match all probability combinations but more than that probably like 400 million tickets purchased but it's always one ticket that wins out of lets say 400 million combinations. How can that be? 🤔 Unless it's hundreds of millions of duplicates around the country of losing tickets and if that the case it's RIGGED and CONTROL. Because it should just be just as many second level millionaires and I'm talking about tens of thousands of millionaires matching 5 balls if truly random. Then you also have the delay drawing saying they need to get the final accurate numbers 🤔Y'all can say what you want but I understand numbers and took many classes on probability and random scenarios. Nope it doesn't hold up in court of law argument. Now of course I would have to prove my theory but they will not let me get anywhere close to them and inspect everything because I'll come up missing.🤣🤣🤣 At the end of the day it's a business and they not going to let you interfere with their secret society of fattening their pockets. Wake up y'all. But hey I still play even if it's RIGGED against me I just want them to prove my theory wrong and 24 years and counting they haven't yet so when I want to blow $3 I just apply it to the lottery and hopefully they are putting 25 cents of my $3 towards the schools like they say they are while they're pocketing my $2.75 for their families and generations of children. All I know if they not, we all got to leave this planet and judgement will come when they go meet their maker.

Another big jackpot and once again only ONE winning ticket out of multiple millions of tickets sold.

It seems fairly obvious that the Quick Pick option must be programmed to not only spit out so called random options, but to also NOT produce DUPLICATE tickets with the exact same combination of five numbers and the powerball. Why else, in spit of the odds, would there not be, for example, 20 winning tickets?

The one winner of the huge Mega-millions jackpot in New Jersey recently selected their own numbers, which means that if not for that there would have been no top jackpot winner among the computer picked tickets.

So what's to do. I only play when the jackpot is about $850 million, purchase about 50 to 75 tickets without the multiplier. About 75 percent are numbers and powerball/megaball I select (covering all the powerballs or megaballs) and 25 percent are computer picked. Haven't won any major money yet, but did get my $100 back a couple of times.

That is a good point. Not all jackpot amounts can set someone for the rest of their lives, but some can put them in a good position so they won't have as many worries. It can get rid of debts and leave some aside for emergencies.

I saw an episode of The Lottery Changed My Life that involved a man who won $100k on a scratch off and he put it to good use. He had suffered from dental problems for much of his life, including having multiple root canals. His teeth caused him pain and looked terrible. He spent $45K on dental work that took care of all of that. Spending on that improved his physical and mental health so I don't think that money went to waste.

You are right, those smaller jackpots are nothing to be ignored.

Based on sales and recalling the fact that every drawing resets the probabilities, the most likely outcome of this particular drawing was that there would be NO winner (nearly 70%). However, "most likely" doesn't mean guaranteed because of....probability.

You don't need a QP machine conspiracy because every jackpot game has duplicates (losing + winning) due to the random nature of the lottery. You can figure this with the below formula:

When you plug in # tickets sold for this drawing, you can get an estimate around 18 MILLION duplicates. The actual number is likely higher due to the patterns/superstitions that players follow.

Where was the winning ticket sold in Oregon? What kind of store was it?
