Lottery winner doesn't have to share
Fortunately the judge had more to work with than logic. The judge also had an understanding of contract law and the ability to recognize that a mortgage between a borrower and a lender is substantially different than an agreement between friends or relatives to share something equally. Your mortgage is an agreement to repay money the bank already gave you, and it includes very specific terms detailing when your contractual obligation ends. While there would be other details, the main provisio

Will R.I. Lottery win or lose in $1 billion IGT contract battle?
Is it a wise move that would keep more than 1,000 high-paying jobs in Rhode Island or just the latest example of a you gotta know a guy back-room deal? Is the lottery giant IGT as Rhode Island as Del's lemonade or as British as Big Ben? In short, is the proposed no-bid, $1-billion, 20-year extension of IGT's current 20-year gambling technology contract a solid win for the Rhode Island economy or an ill-advised sweetheart deal ? As state lawmakers prepare to review the proposal this fall

You buy a 2line ticket to pool with 1 person but they don't pay the $1
Go back and read what you wrote the first time around. You asked us to play judge and told us what happened, so that's what I'm basing my opinion on. If there's a legal dispute the case will be judged on the facts as presented, and what you think won't matter. Think about any other contract you've agreed to, whether it's signing a lease, buying a car, or whatever. Do you think that either party can change the terms just because they thought the other party wouldn't enforce their rights under the

$500K lottery prize divides two elderly sisters
Whether or not a contract needs starting or ending dates depends on the contract. It's easy enough to renew a contract that it's rather pointless to leave it open ended, regardless of what the contract is for. In some cases the dates may be implied, and there may be no reason to spell out a starting date. The sisters' contract would be a good example of the latter, where not having a starting date would imply that it takes effect immediately, and that was presumably their intention at that time.

Can he/she sue me?
For the most part, the lottery's rules are completely irrelevant to any contract that players may have about splitting the proceeds. The only significance of the ticket being a bearer instrument is that proving ownership may be difficult if there's a dispute. If there's a legitimate contract about how to share any proceeds, it will be proving the details of the contract that matters. In the example from the original (and apparently paranoid) poster, I'd say the only requirement of the contract w

Sisters' lottery jackpot trial begins today
The very first sentence in the article clearly says that they played together for years and the court ruled that the consideration that was exchanged was the mutual promise to equally share any prizes. The article also clearly says that the sister who is suing previously shared a $175,000 prize with the sister who bought the PB ticket. The original challenge to the contract was that Connecticut had a law making gambling contracts illegal, but the court ruled that the contract is valid because it
