Bill to limit Minnesota Lottery online sales advances in Senate
A bill to turn off online sales of Minnesota Lottery tickets moved ahead Friday in the state Senate. The bill, which would also do away with play at the pump lottery sales available at some gas stations, cleared the State and Local Government Committee and was headed to the Finance Committee. The measure seeks to pull back the expansion of lottery offerings from beyond what was intended, said Sen. Rod Skoe, DFL-Clearbrook, sponsor of the bill. Skoe chairs the Senate Taxes Committee, and

The Colorado House gave initial approval to prohibiting the sale of lottery tickets online. The bill would forbid the Colorado Lottery Commission from approving such sales, and only in-person sales at licensed stores would be allowed. Lawmakers voted yes on the measure Monday with an unrecorded voice vote, setting up a final vote this week to refer the bill to the Senate. Loveland Republican Rep. Brian DelGrosso, the sponsor of the bill, says it's a way to curb underage gambling. Denver

Mass. Lottery wants to experiment with online gaming
Massachusetts Lottery officials asked lawmakers Tuesday to pass legislation that would let the agency experiment with online gambling. We are not proposing to offer these games to our players with an actual cash transaction, nor are we seeking any appropriation to fund such operations, Lottery Assistant Executive Director Beth Bresnahan told the Committee on Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure. Rather, in the interests of preserving and protecting the Lottery, we simply want to en

Alabama legislator lobbies for state lottery
Faces mountain of resistance The Democrat leader in the Alabama House is calling for the Legislature to use its election-year session to approve a state lottery. Republican leaders say Rep. Craig Ford is carrying a losing ticket for 2014. Ford, D-Gasden, said a state lottery could produce $250 million annually for education purposes and keep money at home that is now going to lotteries in Florida, Georgia and Tennessee. That is why I plan to propose a lottery bill during the 2014 le

Pa. lawmaker wants to give lottery winners right to remain anonymous
A Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, lawmaker unveiled legislation Friday that would allow lottery winners to keep their identities hidden from the public. State Rep. Ted Harhai, D-58, Monessen, said he believes the proposal would help lottery winners avoid the pitfalls that have plagued many past prize winners, from alleged murder attempts to thefts and scams. I think providing this option is necessary, Harhai said in a statement. In particular, multi-state lottery jackpots can reach int

Sen. Gwen Margolis, D-Miami, wants to make Florida Lottery tickets just a click or two away. Margolis has reintroduced a proposal (SB 98) for the 2014 session that would allow the Florida Lottery to create a program so anyone 18 or older could purchase lottery tickets online. The Florida Lottery doesn't offer tickets by mail, fax, or via the Internet, requiring tickets to be purchased from among 13,000 authorized retailers. The proposal comes as a legislative study is underway on the fu

Ohio legislators move to ban Internet lottery sales
While country moves forward, Ohio may move backwards The Ohio Lottery has not joined the move to sell tickets directly to players on the Internet, and a provision in a state budget bill would make sure it doesn't. The bill, which has passed the House and gone to the Senate, would prohibit Ohio from following the lead of states that already let players buy tickets via their computers and handheld devices. Online sales could help lotteries attract younger customers and compete with more g

Texas House reconsiders vote to abolish lottery commission
Well, that was interesting... The Texas House reversed itself Tuesday and tentatively passed a bill that allows the Texas Lottery Commission to continue operating for another 12 years. Texas House votes to abolish state lottery
What the...? The Texas House voted 81-65 to abolish the state lottery Tuesday, which would strip more than $1 billion a year from public schools. A bi-partisan bloc of Republicans and Democrats spoke against the lottery on moral grounds. A group of Democrats joined a Republican contingent that included at least two dozen Republican freshmen in voting against continuation of the Texas Lottery Commission. The vote can be reconsidered later if one of those who voted against the lottery ask

Online lottery plans criticized by some West Michigan lawmakers
Lounging on the couch at home playing Keno and buying lottery tickets on your iPhone or computer doesn't sit well with some West Michigan lawmakers. I know seniors right now whose Social Security doesn't last a month because they're buying lottery tickets at the local store. If they can do it from home, their checks will be gone in less than two weeks, said State Sen. Rick Jones, R-Grand Ledge. A new game system called iLottery would begin offering online sales of single tickets and insta
