Second-largest lottery jackpot in US history won

Powerball

One ticket sold in Oregon matched all six numbers in Wednesday's Powerball drawing to win the $340 million jackpot, the second-largest ever in United States history.

The drawing capped off a day of heavy sales in all 27 states where Powerball is played, plus the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

It was the largest jackpot in the game's history and the second-biggest lottery jackpot in U.S. history.

The winning numbers drawn Wednesday evening were 7, 21, 43, 44, 49 and 29.

There were 49 tickets sold that matched the first five numbers drawn but failed to match the Powerball to win $853,492.

The second prize was much larger than its normal $200,000 amount, due to a feature in Powerball that distributes much of the jackpot prize money down to the second prize when the jackpot reaches record levels.  The feature, called the Match 5 Bonus Prize, was put in use last night for the first time ever, even though the rule was added more than three years ago.

The Powerball jackpot had been snowballing since mid-August, with 20 straight drawings in which no one won the grand prize.

The prize goes to an estimated $15 million for Saturday.

There were a total of 49 tickets that matched the first five numbers, but missed the Powerball: 4 from Arizona, 2 from Colorado, 2 from Washington, D.C., 2 from Indiana, 1 from Iowa, 1 from Kansas, 4 from Kentucky (1 with Power Play), 3 from Louisiana, 4 from Minnesota, 3 from Missouri, 1 from New Hampshire, 4 from Oregon, 10 from Pennsylvania, 1 from Rhode Island, 3 from South Carolina, 1 from Vermont, 1 from U.S. Virgin Islands (with Power Play), 1 from West Virginia and 1 from Wisconsin.

The second prize winners who purchased the Power Play feature will receive a prize of $1,653,492 (before taxes).  The prize is calculated by taking the normal prize of $200,000, multiplying it by the Power Play number that was drawn (5), and then adding the Match 5 Bonus Prize money of $653,492.  The Match 5 Bonus Prize is not multiplied by Power Play.

Mary Neubauer, spokeswoman for the Iowa Lottery, said hundreds of ticket buyers had played a set of numbers from the ABC drama "Lost," which featured a character who won $156 million by playing a string of digits obtained from a patient in a mental institution: 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42.

"I just think it speaks to people's fascination with numbers and the what-if factor," Neubauer said.
The odds of hitting all six numbers were 1 in 146 million.

Not a bad consolation prize in my humble opinion !

Congrats to the big winner!  Do yourself a favor, and do a search in the Lottery Post News forum for "whittaker" (going back to the beginning of the date range), and read up on what NOT to do.

That's a big AMEN!!  I really think everyone should read about him.  When I first started playing (about 3wks ago) I checked for winners stories, and his came up.  I was blown away.  The story it self was written poorly, but it made me think.

THE STORY SHOULD BE MANTORY!

Congrats to the big winner and also to the lucky second tier winners! So will $340 mill now be the new yardstick before the cap comes into effect?

Second place, with the Power Play option, will be a nice amount. Forty-seven people are wishing they has chosen to spend the extra buck. Then again, if they were like me, they were putting their money on the grand prize, not second place. Now that I won zilch, second place is looking super great!

I can picture this person looking at their ticket, hand starting to shake, a warm rush going throught their body, and a high pitched ringing in their ear that drowns out all other noise.... wonder what this persons last reasonable thought was, before their world just took that  sudden change in course, and is starting to head to the realm of the unimaginable.

Congrats to the winner if you checked your ticket/tickets last night then I know you haven't slept a wink are probably shaking from head to toe. If you are reading this post. Try and relax call your lawyer. Tell him you have some exciting news and to send a car for you and your family. Have your lawyer rent you a private room in the best hotel in town? When you get settled in have your immediate family members gathered together and discuss all your options about your big win. Do not tell them what's going on until everyone is together. Decide on a trust fund for your family members and whether your going to remain anonymous. Or claim the ticket in a trust.

Have your lawyer contact the lottery director tell the director your wishes for claming the ticket if you do not want to go public tell your lawyer to set up a private meeting with the lottery director possibly arriving at a rear or side entrance rather than the front door? More than likely media will be present. You might want to avoid that situation. Remember to try and stay calm let your emotions and feelings settle down a bit before making any big decisions. Have fun with it it's the beginning of a lifetime of new challenges and changes.

What a shame.  I was just about to start playing again next week.

Brad

More than likely it will.

There's always the possibility though, that the jackpot for one drawing will land between $340 and $365 million, say $357 million.  So the cap would occur next time, at $382 million.

That's what happened the first time there was a record jackpot after they introduced the "cap" rule.  The "cap" rule was in effect when Whittaker won the $315 million jackpot - the previous record before Whittaker's was $294 million, so Whittaker's wasn't high enough over the previous record to trigger the Match 5 bonus pool then.

By the way, congratulations also goes to all the residents of Oregon.  In addition to all the excess  money spent on lottery tickets, your lucky state is picking up between $13 million and $14 million in state tax revenue on the jackpot prize, should the winner take the cash option.

Almost all of that money is all coming from other states into the State of Oregon.

I don't know much about the politics in Orgeon, so I hope your state is run by fiscal conservatives, who won't blow it all on entitlement programs.

Mainly because there are other things in life besides illusions. The real world is not surrounded by sunshine twenty-fours a day. Polyanna was a fictional movie. Walt Disney was not a nice guy. The list goes on.

That doesn't mean you can't have a positive attitude, at least some of the time. Do you take "grumpy" pills? You seem to be an eternal pessimist.

Hello Todd:

Do you know ( or could you narrow) the location of the winning in Oregon!??? I don't know, I have some  relatives and friends in the state?

By the way, as a  former resident of Oregon state, I thank you for your congratulations!! The 9% of tax from the jackpot will help Oregon government .

It is amazing, for a long time, Oregon residents didn't win much (even the second prize). And now they make the big surprise. I can say " what a life" and "who knows"Sun Smiley

I never considered buying a house next to water and not realizing three things can happen. It can stay pretty, water can recede and I now own a mud hole, or the water can rise, and I now own a useless houseboat. My outlook is to know the possibilities and prepare for them. In almost every single case in life, when there are three choices, two are not good ones. Burying my head in the sand and igoring reality was never an option.

That makes me a realist. Neither a pessimist nor an optimist. Pollyanna was a fictional movie. To think otherwise is to ignore life. Study life in Africa, and you'll see that is true. Those people are pessimistic; with justification! Most will never reach your age before they are killed or die of disease. Want to ignore life as it really is, have at it. Ask some one in Africa if they took a happy pill or a grumpy pill. Or, would that burst the bubble of happiness?

Congratulations to the winning ticket in Oregon. I was pleased that 2 of the tickets who played Power Play ended up getting 1.6 million thanks to the Match 5 bonus prize. If 49 tickets won $653,492 more for the Match 5 bonus prize, how much was in the Match 5 bonus pool?

JAG331

Just multiply....49 people times $653,492 each gives you $32,021,108 in the pool.

Looks to me like you spend 2/3rd's of your life thinking about doom and gloom. It comes through in your responses as loud as a bell. I spend most of my life working on ways to improve it. Guess what? It works.

Lotteries are just amusement for me. Yes, I wager a few bucks just to be in the game. If I'm fortunate enough to win a jackpot or a major prize someday, I'll just count my blessings rather than wringing my hands about annuity versus cash or whether the lottery powers that be are screwing me.

RJOh's avatarRJOh

$340M may be the second largest US lottery jackpot now, but with MegaMillions in the chase, it won't be true in six months.  Mark this post and remember I said it first (I think).

You might want to refrain analyzing my life. You know as much about me as you do about a used prophylactic floating in the Euphrates River. The knowledge of neither will help you sleep at night.

I was away October 10 through today. I'm glad somebody hit NY Lotto because it will discourage people from throwing their money away on this terrible paying game (despite the cash option.) Hopefully in NY everyone's focus will be on Mega Millions. I played $3 Wednesday in West Virginia PB and won zilch.
