Why do people try to justify their desire to win the Lottery?Prev TopicNext Topic

you can cut and paste as much as you want manzplan but the word "gambling" isnt in the bible and you are just trying to pick a fight with people because you admit that you are not a Christian so why would you use the bible as your talking point. lottolaughs had a great response to your negativity about lottery winners who say they are Christians and will donate to charity and you decided to contradict yourself by telling her that the bible says gambling is wrong and the bible doesnt say anything about gambling. you can start a business and if you become a millionaire in a short amount of time that doesnt make you a bad Christian because you hastened to your wealth. you tried to use the bible and then you tried to use "karma" you will say anything to try to discourage people from playing the lottery and saying they will donate to charity. they are talking about doing positive things and most have admitted they already do positive things so why do you want to put a negative spin on it? when you win the lottery you keep doing whatever you want and they will do whatever they want to do with their money. they are not saying they are better than you and you werent specific about what you did for 12 years but that is great that you did whatever good deeds those were so no one is putting a negative spin on what you did so i dont understand why you choose to be so negative when other people say they are also doing positive things and saying they will continue to do them after winning the lottery...
okay let's try this again....
Although the word "gambling" does not appear in the Bible, the practice is clearly condemned in numerous passages of scripture. Gambling is based on the evil desire to get money or goods which belong to someone else without giving fair value in exchange. The Bible calls this sin "covetousness" and makes it clear that those who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God (Romans 1:28-32).
It helps when you actually understand the meaning of the words in the "holy" book of your own religion. :)
Understand what the words in your "holy" Book actually mean okay.
The word covetousness covers gambling.
Okay if you are so big on helping charities then use the money you would spend on the lottery to then help charities..... use the time spent buying lottery tickets and on here to help charities then.
I been here off and on lurking and such for a couple years now and finailly had to post about all the just plain nonsense about people even bringing up charities on a lottery site over and over again.....
and yes some of the same people that put down Jack Whitiker for p*ssing away his 110 Million speak of donating to charities just after putting down Jack who in fact p*ssed away most of the 110 Million to charities.
You're reaction to what I posted is classic guilt based reaction.
I am not being "negative" I am being honest and practical. Many people here actually have no idea what winning the lottery would involve and what would come along with it. If they win with their present attitudes they would end up worse off than before unless they listen to people like me that are talking reason.
And again if you are playing the lottery so you can win and give to charity stop...... give the money to charity instead. Because all the money you spend on the lottery over your lifetime could actually help those charities that you "intend" to donate to after a win. People who play the lottery for a way to help charites if they win are as rediculas as people who play the lottery as a retirement plan. Come on have some damn sense about this issue. You know what I am talking about and deep down you know I am right on this.
If you are playing the lottery for the chance of having a greedy dream come true and can live with that then continue to play. I am honest enough within myself to admit this. Some others in this thread have been as well. Some others are still in denial. :)

There is the book of Jonah.
Also the Genesis book has Joseph.
If you want to talk there is even a book that talk about Jesus and a possible practice of Bibliomancy ...

manzplan: "The word covetousness covers gambling."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the bible, the word "covetousness" refers to WANTING SOMETHING THAT BELONGS TO SOMEONE ELSE.
For example, the Ninth Commandment says:
Exodus 20:17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.
If gambling was a sin, God would have said so, just like He said that killing, stealing, and sleeping with another man's wife is wrong.

meanings of ancient words at times have multiple meanings. But then again I don't believe in this Christian Mythology anyway. What I do know for a fact is that even 30 years ago if you brought up the notion that gambling wasn't a sin you would be branded a sinner and driven from most Protestant Churches.
Your Bible isn't always as clear as Christian would like to think. If fact most don't even understand or know what it really says because they can't read it in it's original forms. The various books that comprise the Christian Bible say very different things when read in the original langauges they were written in.
However I didn't bring Christianity into this discussion someone else did. What my original post was about was anyone who says they are playing the lottery so that they can win and donate the money to charity and how idiotic that is. As idiotic as thinking of the lottery as a retirement plan.
Yes we would all like to win this thing called the lottery. However some people I really think believe that if they say they will donate to charity enough that somehow "God" will make sure they win it.
We all are trying for this shot at winning the lottery so then our desire to win The Lottery over others playing the lottery is a form of covetousness. I really don't see how you can't understand that.
For anyone of us to win the lottery it takes from the dreams of millions of others on that given week who also view that money as something they either should win or want to win. I am quite aware of this and honest about it within myself. I am aware that it is a selfish desire. However my belief system doesn't prohibit me from playing and winning the lottery. My belief system doesn't say I have to give of myself until it hurts. That is the difference between me and those who have Christian Belief systems.
As for Charities I have a very dim view of most Charities which is not based on not wanting to give money or time to charities but is based on what those charities focus on. For instance I don't see the value of spending money, time, resources, and land to bury children who were left for dead. What I would see as a valued charity is one who deals with the problems leading to the child being left for dead. Things that focusing on changing society to where that doesn't happen. However this is something that needs to happen on a government level.
Also donations of food and clothing to certian regions of the world are basically pointless as the shipments are taken by rouge governments and rebels. Governments and their miliitaries need to be involved in these things. I have no problem with my tax dollars going to help those types of things. The problems in the Sudan aren't going to be helped by donations to charities from individuals it's gonna take military action to end those problems.
My personal feeling is that a lottery win of any size would be more beneficial if used to make more money and in the process of creating more wealth for one's self and family others would benefit as well. Imagine if you bought a factory in a 3rd world country and just doubled the wage paid to the workers. That would be huge. Plus it would empower those people mentally and emotionally. There are ways to improve people's lives without just handing money out. Ponder that and the amount of good you could do in ways that empower people instead of belittle them. Yeah soup kitchen's are needed but going to them doesn't empower people now does it. Creating a means for people to sustain themselves whilst you also increase your wealth does empower people.
Understand where I am going with this now?
Thing is if any of you win The Big One and in the interview you even mention that you will donate to charities.... then my friends you have opened a Pandora's Box that you will have a hard time shutting. You will have every charity breathing down your neck and some people creating new charities simply to target your winnings. Any of you really want to deal with that?
It's better to simply act like you are a complete bast*rd and donate in secret. Because if you win The Big One and let the Pandora's Box of The Charity System open up on you then my friends you will eventually find yourself in a soup kitchen line...... not serving food but getting food.

You know what I think? I think you like to hear yourself talk. You write these long winded theories of yours as if you're an authority on money management, and how people should spend it. Also, how stupid it is if they don't do it to your specifications.
People can say whatever they want while standing on line to buy tickets. It's their right to say and do anything their heart desires.
Put the bullhorn down and move on.
Nothing is written in stone.

I think many of us do feel guilty about wanting alot of money for ourselves. After all, from the time we were knee high to a bug we've heard how money is the root of all evil, how it will be easier for a camel to fit through the eye of a needle than a rich man to make it to heaven. Trash like that. And who hasn't heard rich people referred to in derogatory terms just because they're rich? Like rich bi*tch or referring to the high income area as snob hill. I think many of the people who say most of their win will go to charity are trying to convince themselves that they deserve to win, and that they won't become a bi*tch or a snob just because they're wealthy.
That said, when I win, I will give a large portion to charity. Like others here, I already give to charity even though my income is quite low. But I am honest enough to admit that I will take care of MY needs first. I will make certain I have a nice home and enough invested to have the income to travel, pursue hobbies, have nice cars, pay for a decent nursing home when I'm too old to even know I'm wealthy, etc. FIRST, then I will give the remainder to charity.
I agree that providing jobs is just as valuable as giving to charity. I'm just not entreprenurial (I know I spelled that wrong) and it would be torture for me to try to run a business, so I won't go that route. Plus, there are people who need outright charity, people who can't work, people who are working but need a little extra help, people whose homes burned down at a time they couldn't afford insurance, etc.
For the record I am talking about donating to Charities in the sense of donating to Charitable Organizations. Helping the odd person out in extreme situations is a given.
However helping the odd person out should never be say paying off their credit card bill or buying thier son a luxery car and insurance.
Michigan MegaMillions winner Larry Ross once related a story of how he helped some people out with a 25000 credit card bill then 6 months later that same person came back with another either 25000 or 50000 credit card bill that they wanted Larry to pay as well.
Helping out people who can't work is the place of the government and not individuals... we pay taxes for that already. Amazing that some people I have known or know complain about that sort of thing and then turn around and claim they would donate to charity if they won the lottery. Yes that is more the norm than the exception. So much for charitable hearts.

If you don't like what I write than don't read it. It's a forum and people come to forums to discuss things and sometimes those things can be hard for others to hear. It's really of more value to have dialogs about various subjects and actually go back and forth on issues than to just be all cutesy and throughout politeisms to those whom you've bonded with on a forum. I've seen your posts and they lack substance for the most part IE a waste of bandwidth.
Yes people can say anything they want and I can say what they say is BS.
I hope you realize just how idiotic your post was. You say people have a right to say anything they want then you tell me to put down the bull horn. So I guess people can say anything they want as long as it fits into your small world view of things. Is that right?
I never said they couldn't say what they wanted to say. I simply said what they are saying is BS and defined why I think it is BS.
But you basically just told me to shut up and stop stating my opinion. You're a hypocrite. But then again that was fairly appearent from the start. Oh you're just sitting there waiting for a hurrah and 3 cheers from the rose coloured glasses set I bet.
Have a nice day :)

To state an opinion is one thing. To cram your belief system down my throat is something else. You've made a career out of this.
I hope you realize just how idiotic your post was. You say people have a right to say anything they want then you tell me to put down the bull horn. So I guess people can say anything they want as long as it fits into your small world view of things. Is that right?
Yes...say anything you want once or twice, but you keep reiterating it as if your ways are the only belief system. That is all I'm saying. You won't find any relief until everyone throws a party for you.
It's either your way or the highway.
Like I said before, no black and white, gray areas will always exist, whether you like it or not.
It's like me going onto a UFO forum and try convincing everyone on that board that UFOs don't exist. Page after page of rantings going on. But....on the other hand, I can go to the same forum and say....well.....There's a possibilty that they might exist, and they may not. See? So simple...
Why can't you just accept someone's different beliefs as their right to have it?
I really don't get this at all.
When you make a poll, you don't post it 5 times. Once you get someone's vote, you don't keep poking them with a stick, hoping they'll change their vote until they finally agree with what you wanted them to vote on, and give up and concede.....LOL
-
pacattacks why can't you accept someone else has different beliefs?
And as for their vote.... If they actually listen to the original question and not try to make it into a something else fine.... vote noted and such.
However, my original post was specific about what I was talking about. You simply don't like it cos it plays on your own guilt because you are most likely one of the people I am talking about in the original.
I can see you are a person that can't handle a dialog. You want everything wrapped up in neat little packages.
and btw yes this is a lottery forum.... I posted this because I come to look at stuff on the lottery and I keep seeing Charity BS and Christian BS..... and some of you think that some people deserve to win the lottery over others which is also BS.
and again why can't you accept my right to have different opinions on the opinions of others. It's called debate, it's called discussion, it's called discourse, it's called a dialog.. People that can't handle such things such as yourself should simply stay off the internet.
What made you so fragile?
Again if you don't like what I am posting then simply stop writing to me. Personally I think you like arguing with me. That is the role you play. The defender of the forum. Anyone with half a brain can see through that crap mask you put on. It's made out of paper and will wash away with the rain. Yeah I am so so so sorry to rain on your little parade with a discussion that you can't handle. So why don't you simply bow out and pratice what you are preaching to me. Otherwise you can continue a dialog about the original subject matter of this thread. If not then you are just a flammer/spammer and nothing more.
oh I am so sorry that the viens in your forehead are starting to pound.... do I detect a whimper? some tears coming on.... a little grinding of the teeth?
I suggest a little Valarian Tea to calm you down. Now take 2 Asz Burns and call me in the morning.

I won't be calling you tomorrow night or even on here tomorrow night. I have other plans. At my night job now tomorrow I will be going to the horseraces and then finish up at a Sushi Bar.... That's what I am doing for Father's day. Maybe Monday or Tuesday Night. We've an employee deficet at our hotel due to the booming economy in Alberta so I am having to work more nights than I would like to because we simply can not get employees because everyone in the area are wealthy and most of us don't actually need to work fulltime and there is no lower income housing out here.
But then again I might not post on here for a long time either. Depends if this subject still interests me on Monday.... :)
