Lottery winner busted on pot charge

Massachusetts Lottery

A Massachusetts man riding high after winning $500 in the lottery jumped onto the roof of a car to celebrate, only to be brought back to earth by police, who busted him for property damage — and possession of marijuana, officials said.

Cops arrested Joseph Taglieri, 31, outside of his apartment on Prince Street in Boston yesterday, after watching him scream "YEEESSSS!!!!!" and leap onto a nearby 1994 Toyota Camry, denting the roof, according to the Suffolk District Attorney's Office.

"I was having such a bad day," Taglieri told the Herald today, adding he was having money problems. "The first number says I've won $500 so I start jumping up and down, like out of control. I didn't mean to jump on the hood of the car but I was happy ... It was almost like everything was going to be OK."

When the cops arrested him, Taglieri told them that he was carrying marijuana, he and the DA's office said. Police found a sandwich bag in his pocket that they believed to contain more than one ounce of marijuana, according to the DA. Police hustled him down to the station for booking.

"I didn't even get to finish scratching the scratch ticket," Taglieri said, adding that he had not realized he had dented the car.

In 2002, Taglieri was convicted on drug distribution charges, and was sentenced to two years in prison, according to the district attorney's office. In 2008, he was convicted of breaking and entering and he appeared in court again on drunken driving charges last year, the DA said.

Taglieri told the Herald that he was carrying about half an ounce of marijuana. Carrying less than one ounce of marijuana is not a crime in Massachusetts, though the person can be fined.

Taglieri was arraigned today in Boston Municipal Court on charges of destruction of property and marijuana possession. Taglieri's lawyer David Fitzgerald could not be immediately reached for comment.

Taglieri, who was allowed to keep his scratch-off winner, is due back in court Sept. 21.

Oh, well ok then, Joe, as long as you didn't mean to jump on the hood of the car it's ok. And you had extenuating circumstances anyway - you were happy.

Oh, by the way, the cops said you were jumping up and down on the roof of the car, not the hood. You must have been really happy. So that's understandable.

I was just wondering how you tell the judge you got on the roof of a car without meaning to.

I would use the defective Pogo-Stick defense, Joe.

There's no way it was your fault.

Yeah, I agree this guy acted like a bonehead loser over just winning $500.00.  I guess he must have just had 50 cents in his pockets and non-existent bank account to "jump" for joy like that.  If he actually jumped from the ground up onto the roof of that car, I think he might want to hone either his ball catching skills or basketball skills and try to get on a team with hops like that.  But he would need to give up hitting the wacky weed.

Something else caught my eye...I love journalists!

Taglieri, who was allowed to keep his scratch-off winner, is due back in court Sept. 21.

This would lead one to think that the police/DA could arbitrarily determine to seize one's property for any type of crime; however, it is well known that they will seize drug dealers property and given that he was charged with drug distribution for such a small amount of mj, I guess he is lucky they "allowed him to keep his scratch-off winner".  But I wonder if they would have done so had it been a $2million scratch-off winner or a winning jackpot ticket?  In those cases, I would think they would say, "Cha-ching ching" we (the police/DA) have just hit the lottery!!!

Another "happy" vandal ... a menace to society!  He'll probably escape paying for damages to the car owner though.

damages won't even be 500.00. at least he knows where to get weed. time to legalize it has been overdue. at least in ma there is no penalty for possessing it. there is no way they can even enforce the 100.00 fine. what a joke.

I agree, it says a lot about society in general thatthe story here is that he was busted on pot charges, not that he was busted on destruction of property.  Honestly, which is worse?

I think its funny that he got so excited for $500 because he was having money problems, yet was able to afford an entire ounce of pot!

TheGameGrl's avatarTheGameGrl

Actually what is worse is the judgmentalism this thread has opened up . Yes the behavior created damage and for that legally it deserves compensation. Done

Well look at how many people have money issues and who spend it on gambling. Granted, of course, gambling can result in getting money, where buying that ounce of pot likely would not (I'm not well versed on marijuana purchases but since that amount is near the 'not illegal' mark I'd assume he hadn't bought it to sell it and make money like you would a higher weight of the stuff).

But still, without the marijuana factoring into the story it's still pretty humorous. Win $500, jump on and damage a car and then get arrested... likely using all of the $500 he won. Something makes me think he wouldn't be able to keep a jackpot win quiet.

I think it calls for a good old fashioned ass whoopin'.

absolutely does not a need to hire a lawyer or be appointed one for this silly case. nothing more than a civil matter. no da or prosecutor would even bother with this. he will pay damages and that is the end of it. no one can force you into rehab for weed possession in this country, unless the find out you watched that crap tv show the A-team, then you could be committed to ancora where you probably escaped from.

GYM RICE, I'm glad you're not "unconscious" anymore.  That is, if you're also glad.

Anyhow, apparently many of these "sociopaths" aren't "biological" but rather "learned."

This isn't to say that the drug using, private 'property damager' written about in this article is a sociopath ... no tests were performed.  Could be bipolar or no illness/bent.  However, it would be interesting to discover if this man would have behaved this way without drug hampered brain and body.

this will be continued without a finding pending possible restitution for damages. no penalty for the drug possession as it is unenforeceable in this state. the courts are only interested in making money not justice in these types of cases, so yes a court fee is possible, jail is not even on the radar screen for this schmuck. case closed.
