Britain's youngest lottery winner still broke, but expecting twins

After the Big Win

A lottery winner who frittered away her £1.9 million (US$3 million) fortune on drink, drugs and luxury items is expecting twins — and she says the feeling is even better than when she hit the jackpot.

Callie Rogers, who was 16 when she matched all six numbers to become Britain's youngest lottery winner, is pregnant with two boys and due to give birth next month.

She said it meant she can finally live life to the full, having learned the hard way that money cannot buy happiness.

(See Now broke, teen lottery winner blew through $3M, Lottery Post, Sept. 2, 2009.)

'I'm so excited about having my boys,' she told the Sunday Mirror.

'It's the best gift anyone could ever have given me and far better than ever winning the jackpot.'

Miss Rogers, who already has a son and a daughter, was living in foster care when she won the National Lottery in 2003.

She had been placed with a kindly couple, Brian and Sheila Holmes, who provided her with the security and comfort she had lacked for so long.

But after her win she moved out and began a spending spree which led her to depression.

She spent £550,000 on four properties for herself and her family before splashing out £85,000 on cars.

Before long she had paid £11,500 for breast implants. She later posed naked for a magazine, with only banknotes to preserve her modesty.

She spent £200 a month on hair extensions and much more on clothes.

Miss Rogers treated her ex-boyfriends - including mechanic Simon Winthorpe, who got a £7,000 car and was paid £3,000 to be her chauffeur because she was too young to drive.

Another ex-lover, Gary Fidler, received gifts worth £4,000.

But the good life didn't last for long. She developed a cocaine habit and ended up blowing £250,000 on parties and drugs.

It led to the breakdown of her relationship with Nicky Lawson, the father of her children, Debony and Kian, and she attempted suicide three times after she lost custody of them.

She said: 'I made bad choices with men as I was young and stupid, and I was partying to the point where I was totally out of control. Looking back I am horrified by the choices I made.'

Now 25, the former shop assistant, originally from Cockermouth and currently living in Workington, Cumbria, could not be happier.

She met the father of the twins, factory supervisor Paul Penny, two years ago and she says he has helped her to turn her life around.

She lives with Mr Penny, 33, in a modest rented three-bedroom terrace house. She had to sell the last home she owned for £70,000.

Miss Rogers has only £40,000 left from the sale, which she plans to use to support her babies and pay for their education.

The only 'luxury' item she has left is a second-hand BMW she bought with Mr Penny for £15,000.

She said: 'I might not have any of my millions left, but I have met the man of my dreams and together we are about to have twins and both of us could not be more excited.'

PERDUE

So happy to see the young woman turned her life around and is happy with herself and found someone to share that happiness with her.

I wish nothing but the best for her and her budding family.

I Agree! PERDUE, this young lady has been through a lot. It's nice to read that she has turn her life around.

I had a totally different picture in mind as I read through the story of what she might look like after that world wind lifestyle. BOY WAS I WRONG!

I saw her story on TV last summer, one of those documentaries on how the lottery can ruin lives.  That girl has been through so much.  I hope this means a better turn in her future.

I hope her life is now all that she could have ever hoped it could be.  Some lessons are hard to learn.  Sounds like she has at least tried to learn them well.

'Trax, I'm not exactly sure what you meant with this emoticon but, I believe I have a clue...and will take a reasonable stab at it. First of all, I can see she's been through a lot just as everyone else does. However, I can also see where although she was lucky enough to win all that money, she was still just too young and immature to realize what it REALLY MEANT, FUTURE-WISE, IN THE BIG PICTURE FOR HER LIFE. This, to me, is just a classic case of someone coming into tons of money, and, just isn't ready for it...BY FAR. Also, she probably didn't have any positive influences, like friends or relatives, to help her manage and MAINTAIN her wealth for times just like RIGHT NOW as she's expecting twins.

No one here can convince Lucky that her and her husband's life wouldn't be 1000% better with atleast 1/4th of that money for the new family. I mean, I do understand where she's been in life and have some sympathy for her but, I'm seeing this as a very good lesson for her to look back on and for lots of others to see as what not to do...even people here at LP.

I personally know a guy here who won around $90,000 (approx.) on Cash 5 about ten years ago. Prior to this, he never really had or dealt with "real" money before.  Well, he went and claimed his money and began to buy lots of jewelry, clothing, and vehicles. Now, he did purchase his mom a vehicle and did some things for his family. But, all of his money was blown on "several" cars for himself, buying all his friends expensive gifts, buying his "NEW GIRLFRIENDS" gifts, furnishing all those girls' houses/apartments with furniture, "making it rain" at all the clubs, etc. etc.

Right now, and to this very moment, he's pretty much homeless...with absolutey nothing to show for that money AT ALL. They took  the cars back and he had to sell a couple. The thought of buying a house or some land never even crossed his mind. He never thought about getting old and needing a little something to fall back on. From what I can see, people that don't know what to do with real money seem to win it without effort. Those who have a plan for it have to sit back and watch those people win it and blow it.

I see this as a STRONG MESSAGE for those of us who are waiting to possibly experience such a windfall, and, to have a plan in place both mentally and financially. It's a once in a lifetime deal, you only get one shot at it, and it's the difference between having a good life and thinking how good you could've had it. Take note.

Just hope I'm as lucky and get a chance to make a similar mistake(with that amount of money).  At my age I won't have to worry about turning my life around. Wink

So what if she pissed a lot of money away? You're only young once and may never get the chance to have that kind of fun again.I'm pretty sure if she does get the opportunity to have that kind of money again she'll be a little wiser with it.I know if I had access to that amount of money at her age I would have pissed it away, too. When I was young I didn't think that I'd get old and really didn't care what people said or thought,it was all about having fun.I lived to have fun and with that amount of cash I'd  have lots of fun.Now that I'm older and wiser,I'd be more conservative with it and plan on it lasting the rest of my life.I'd still have my toys, but the toys would be different than the toys I'd have bought when I was younger and there'd be less of them.I think she will do just fine.

I just want to make certain that I understand your post full and well here, okay. This isn't to be argumentative or anything like that either. So, at six-teen (16) years old while you're probably still living at home, you come into that kind of money and NO ONE in your family has sense enough, or, the wherewithawl to help you NOT BLOW IT??? I mean, no one seems to have told her, "Hey sweety, we're gonna let you spend a little and enjoy it, but we're gonna put the most of it away so you can go to college later if you'd like and get a nice house to live in. You have no bills right now, no bad credit, no responsibilities, and this is a heck of a way to begin your life, dear!!!!! I wish I would've had such an opportunity!!!!!"

Can you feel where I'm going with this? Every one around her seems to have helped her to spend and blow the money...and I actually fault those around her of age and maturity for allowing it happen. That's where my sympathy comes in at. No one thought about her future at all. She couldn't think about it because she couldn't see the future...all she saw was right now and all that money to play with. You have to really dissect things before elaborating sometimes.

I'd really like to think that SOMEONE in your circle of friends and family would've stepped up to help save your future in a situation like this. Just sayin' and no harm intended.

That's great that she's happy, but she will probably never forgive herself for wasting millions. No fromer winner who lost it all does, but you cannot cry over spilled milk. I just wish America allowed this. I'm sure many parents as well as the teens would love this. No, this does not always have to turn negative. Your kid can send him or herself to school if they still won't to go. Parents can also retire early. Younger siblings futures can also be secure.

I'm sure you would have handled it much better if you were in her situation back when you were her age. Don't be bitter and jealous now.

As for the picture comments uhh... From some quick digging and looking at the source... Those pictures are old, I remember the first one from an older story, the image of her holding the novelty check is from when she was 16, the other from a couple years ago. I wonder why Todd didn't use the new ones of her semi-nude and pregnant. LOL Also, they forgot to mention the hideous tattoo. Puke

Anyway, if her life has turned for the better than good for her.

Hey, I'm sorry to hear that, okay. Thanks for not reading into it and taking it the wrong way also. I kinda figured that at the age she was, and then to end up broke, no one was around to help control the money being spent. I wish I knew how long it took for her (them) to go through all that money now. Take it easy, buddy.

I agree.  Some years ago she was featured on E!'s "The Curse of the Lottery" and I don't remember anyone saying they cared about her well being. I have it on DVD so I would have to watch it again to be sure.
