Haha, you are right, I wasn't guessing.
It was basically a race, or a prolonged coinflip with ties involved, since the goal was to hit 5/5 quicker than the other person. I guess since the draw he did win on, he chose less numbers than me, I was more likely to win, but randomness occurs....
But I bet if you keep that same thing running for a very long time, that I would do just as bad as you. Of course your results look good now, but I'm not a results oriented thinker when it comes to games of chance. I learned that lesson the hard way, winning a few hundred on the Pick 3 when I turned 18 and losing more than just that in the next few months of play. The variance involved in these games can trick many short term winners... You have to be value oriented and just bet accordingly or the ups, and more specifically, the downs after the ups will kill you. And that's in games where the STD DEV over hundreds of trials is only in the 100s of dollars, where as the lottery played at the same stakes would be way, way higher. (1/2 NLHE can have STD DEVs around 240 dollars per 100 hands, for example)
The Lottery has both negative expectation and high STD DEV, making it horrible for advantage players, but since variance is what makes it possible for you to win in a losing game it's just fine for casual gamblers who just want to play a few dollars. If Ronnies goal is to play bigger money than most, that's his decision to make. I'd like to argue that his money is better put to use elsewhere, but since as far as I know he isn't actually buying thousands of tickets - and I'm sure he's playing within his means since he doesn't seem to be a degenerate by any measure of the word - his Lottery play probably doesn't negatively affect him and is probably really fun, too.
I wish you good luck on your real plays... You, just like every other person out there, will need it to win...
