    "

Taxes should be in the price of the ticket, not on the backs of winners.

    BobP"

Why assume ticket prices would rise to $1.39?  That's not what happens in countries where the tax is built into the ticket price.  There's a lot of work around room in that dollar.

As you know, the lottery games generally pay out only 50% of what they take in.  For every million paid out they take in two million.  About 15% goes to running the lottery scheme itself, the remaining 35% goes to the state.  Casinos make their millions on only 5% or less. The feds could take 15% from the state leaving them 20% leaving the price of tickets to the state auditors to decide, of course the states could pay 7.5% from the prize pool and 7.5% from the state profit, whatever works.  Oh and it's not just about having to pay taxes on millions, it's also about the pain in the butt paying taxes on that Pick-4 Straight Prize or in Florida the 4 number $1,200 win roll-down Pick-5 prize when there is no jackpot winner.

    BobP

The "effective tax" of the lottery (about 30-35%) is already built into the low prizes they pay. Like a 1-in-1000 pick str only pays $500 or $600, but for a casino would pay $900. Same goes for all other games and prizes, they pay much less than what a normal gambing business should because of the heavy effective tax burden. The lottery tax comes up front on revenue like a sales tax.(included in the price/size of product) Whereas a casino pays only on profits, net income tax, not on revenue.

So if the lottery is already heavily taxed, why do most states still collect tax on your lottery winnings again? CA and a few others don't. That's how it should be. Lottery play is already performing fundraising for public benefit, taxing again is just filling the coffers of the state.

As for the Feds/IRS, I think they should stay out of it for small wins of a few thousand. Like they do on eBay/PayPal: if your sales transactions are less than $20,000 total for the year, there's no income reporting to IRS. They should do the same with the lottery office.

Most people that win $600, $1000, $1200 or even a few thousand are not profiting from the lottery, due to the high 30-50% house edge, since it's so heavily taxed already. It should be treated differently from casino gambling. So unless it's a large win. Leave us the heck alone!

What future Republican president would have the COURAGE to write an executive order to totally ban ALL FEDERAL TAXES ON FUTURE LOTTERY WINNERS?

Heck if we want to go that far then what Republican candidate would actually have the COURAGE to propose "specific big cuts to the budget" in order to balance it and save the country from the fate of Detroit?Big Grin

Why would you have to ban it?  I already heard and read that in the tax code, if you can prove it, you can write off your losses against your winnings?

However I am not sure if you need

      A) the tickets

      B) the sales receipts

      C) the blood of your first born.

I dont expect people to spend 10,000 to win 50,000, but it might be a good investment/challenge if there is a clause in the tax code for write offs.

However I dont know how I would manage 10,000 in losing tickets.  I might have to rent a warehouse to store my losing tickets.

HEY!!! Perhaps that is a write off too!?!Idea

(Right now I can store them in about three shoeboxes, overflowing)  Small spender.

When Republican Presidents get the country into wars- they ought to remember that someone has to pay for it.There is no such thing as a " free war".There is no such thing as balancing the budget when you have more than one war on your hands either.
          What are you thinking.

So what would be an appropriate response to terrorists and the countries that sponsor them? Also, Obama has taken credit for withdrawing troops out of Iraq and drawing down those in Afghanistan. So what is his excuse for running trillion dollar deficits each year?

Get MONEY!!! Winning a JACKPOT lottery is all the HOPE and CHANGE I desire!!!  NOW give me MONEY!US Flag

The guy who won the presidency in 2008 really won the lottery...he is now millions richer, travels in first class style, and even has a staff that would be the envy of the richest Powerball winner (she has a staff of 2). Every night he goes to sleep, he probably plays the close of Dave Chappelle's Show: I'm rich beyatch!

Democrats and Republicans are always beefing ( fighting ) with each other. We need a Vegan president from the Vegetarian party in the White House.

I don't care what the president eats or says,

              just watch what he does.

You do realize that since the Teabaggers hijacked the Republican party- the next time this country sees a Republican in the Oval Office is in 30 years time?
Do you still see yourself playing the lottery at that time, many here would probably be in walkers or wearing diapers- what good would tax talk on lottery tickets do one then?

Tea party is for less taxes and less government in our lives.  What is wrong with either of those?

Obamacare is a perfect example of why the government should not be in any type of business.

How about Solyndra?  There are many examples of goverment's ineptitude in business.

The Federal government should be protecting its citizens, not subsidizing their lives for their whole life.

Phoenix, AZ is the kidnapping capital of the world.  There are parts of the border that the border patrol won't go because of the Mexican drug cartels.  Our military should be protecting us from that.
