I always hear people talking about why lottery winners should claim anonymously (if their state allows it). But what advantages does a public winner have?

    You'll make more friends Wink

If the chances of winning the jackpot are so slim, why play when the jackpot is so small? Your chances never change, but the potential payoff does.
If a crystal ball showed you the future of the rest of your life, and in that future you will never win a jackpot, would you still play?

Its been said that if a winner comes forward, they take the mystery out of " who won?"- they also get the press and others off their backs and go about their lives- in other words, they can disappear, however it can also be open season on winners from beggars, thieves, charlatans and the list goes on and on....

When you win big money, you attract all kinds of attention including the wrong kind.  Lurking     Money does weird things to people.

I can't see any advantage congruent with publicizing a jackpot win.

And good arguments can be made for either side of this issue too.

But against my own personal preference for privacy, I'd have to go with the outing of winners.

And that's simply because I don't fully trust the present or future muckety-mucks enough to refrain from the temptation to capitalize on what seems to me to be an easy avenue for potential corruption.

And if I can imagine it, you can bet somebody else has already figured out a way to do it.

If you have a big ego going public would definitely stroke it!

I wouldnt think of it as an advantage rather more of a choice. I'd just want the public to know that another real live person had won and for beggars coming to my door LOL you're not releasing your personal address, though Id probably publicly release my facebook page, since I havent used it in 3 yrs, and cant even remember the password, so they could think they were reaching me there

Somebody wanting to reach you?   LOL

Why would anyone want to do that?

Do you really think it's just a coincidence that you live alone?
