This is a list of total winners for the Jan 28 2015 Powerball draw.

Note the number of tickets played by state.

Those who run the lotteries love it when players look for consistency in something that's designed not to have any.

There is one and only one 'proven' system, and that is to book the action. No matter the game, let the players pick their own losers.

Interesting that CA did not have any power play winners this draw! Even thought they had 104,000 reg winners.

Power play is not offered in CA. Too bad in my opinion. I would buy it if it was offered here.

I cant understand why people do not understand that it's simply a function of where the most people live.  California is the most populated state in the union, followed by Texas, New York and Florida.  Notice all of those states sell more tickets than most other states?

It's a lot like the electoral college... The states with the most people have the most influence (votes) in Presidential elections.  And, the states with the most people have the most Representatives/Congressional districts in The U.S. House of Representatives.

For instance Cali has 53 Congressional Districts, (the number 1 state ranked by population) while Alaska (the 47th state ranked by population) has ONE!

In the states where they sell the most tickets, there is a greater opportunity (greater chance) that they will sell more winning tickets compared to states where few tickets are sold.

About playing the lottery --  You will lose more than you win. Until you hit a jackpot.  Then everything changes!

Just looking at the chart CT made me wonder why CA did not have at the very least " One" 2nd place winner. Then it dawned to me that we have resigned ourselves to the fact that we rather have the whole enchilada.Big Smile

Thanks for the replies every one.

It seems to be an inherent part of discussion boards that people will vent and post what they think things should be instead of going an extra step and looking them up. That's always kind of made me wonder. We have to be on the net to get to LP, so since some one is already on the net..........

                  Oh well.

Here's the same data with tickets sales and average number of tickets sold to produce a winner. I didn't bother with all of them, but here's the first 20 states on the list. The overall odds of winning PB are 1 in 31.85, so simple probability suggests that a winner would be produced for every 31.85 tickets sold. The actual range is from 1 winner for every 31.84 tickets sold (2 states are dead on) to 1 out of 34.16. All told there were 16,559 fewer winners that suggested by probability, which is a deviance of 3.6%. I'm sure it won't convince the usual bunch of idiots, but the actual results are well within the normal variation that can be expected.

"some states haven't had a jackpot winner in YEARS."

As can be easily extrapolated from the table above, some states only sell 10 to 20 million tickets in an entire year. If the odds of winning a jackpot are 1 in 175 million, how often do you think a winner should be sold in those states?

Agreed,  I have tried saying that some states haven't had a jackpot winner in years, and the usual ones get into a ball.  Yet they try and convince others that everyone some how has an equal chance of winning...Of course some of us know that is BS,  some will attack and harass for pointing some thing that is right in front of their faces.

I'm trying my best to pull away from pb and mm.  Because  I to feel that everybody does not have the same chances of winning and that's my opinion.  someone said one time that you have to be in the right place at the right time as far as buying your lottery ticket.  I guess I look at all the tickets that have been bought across the United States and still some of the same places still are lucky enough to get the winning tickets or second tier.

In the month of January, there have been 42 Powerball second prize winners in 8 draws. I didn't take the time to add all the states. But to me that is 42 people that won at least 1 million dollars.

I do agree that I hate to see the matrix change. Personally, This Saturday will be the second time i have bought a PB tic this year. Once the changes takes place, PB is pretty much off my radar unless it climbs as high or higher than it is now.
