Rosemary WTG and I'm happy for her but I'd sure have mixed feelings wishing it would have happened A LOT

      sooner..she's 87

She looks very happy though and that's what matters for her.

$25,000 a year for life, or a $390,000 lump sum.

how do they determine this Lump sum payout?

The lump sum payout is the cost of an annuity that would pay $25,000 per year for a fixed period of time.  With compounding at today's rates (5 yr CD is 1.67%), that fixed period is about 18 years.  Considering she's 87, I think the lump sum option was a good choice.
