From the Florida Lottery website: The Internal Revenue Service requires that the Florida Lottery withhold 25 percent federal withholding tax from prizes greater than $5,000 if the winner is a citizen or resident alien of the U.S. with a Social Security number. The Florida Lottery is not required to withhold federal withholding taxes from prizes for $5,000 or less. If the prizewinner is a U.S. citizen or resident alien who does not have a Social Security number, the Florida Lottery is requi

I won! Now what?
That is Fantastic! Congrats! I've heard rumors that you can use old, losing tickets as part of your tax write off to help off set all of the taxes you're about to pay, so if you have a lot of them laying around, don't throw them away. Call an accountant and ask them what the rules are.....see if you can use them as a tax write off (or if it's worth it....you might have to have A LOT of them to make it worth your while).......There's something in the tax rules about 'losses' towards your

Thanks. I kinda assumed that. I am sure it's only going to set me back $30 or so, so its not a stresser. Not going to go all political here, but they really get you with the taxes. wish I could get 30% back on all my losses :) Actually looks like PA, we can deduct http://www.doreservices.state.pa.us/eServices/padirect/sch_t.htm

Can I ask you something? Being an IT guy I get questions all the time, so I hope you don't mind a quick tax question. I do my taxes online. I know on Federal I claim my $1000 and I know I can offset it. When I won at the casino a few years ago(couldnt' offset with losses), I had to also claim that for state(according to the online place). Can I offset those loses on state also? I didn't file yet and I know the place online will direct me, so i guess it was more of a curiosity. My W2-G from the l

Saw something amazing yesterday
I had been reading about math teachers who use baited hook scratch cards to predict the winners from the losers, and win millions. However it takes an inside man, a cashier to let you sift through them to only buy the probable winners, so I never did it. It also takes some investment time and money to crack the codes of the cards of your state in the first place. Well I was in line yesterday to get a lotto ticket or ten, and a man with a 4 inch stack of a $10 game of the same scratch card hands

Florida Scratch Off Taxes
Dear Ed Thank you for writing the Florida Lottery. In response to your email, please note that applicable taxes are taken first. Scratch-Off games with annual prize options, if the Cash Option payment is not already predetermined, will reflect the cash value, which is the amount required on the day the winner claims their prize to fund the applicable prize paid over 20 years. SO THERE YOu HAVE IT DUCKMAN !

Im not a big fan of that card Red. The most a $10 $5000 a week for life pays off in a deck is $20. I know we play for big money but I like the win a little something to substain me in the meantime. The plus side it is loaded heavy on the top end but you are going to dud out a ton trying to get there. A lady hit on the $10 $5000 for life jsut this week and just one mile from lottery headquarters (go figure). She took the lump sum and after taxes see received 2.7 mil. She had the money in less

Man given wrong scratch ticket wins $1 million prize
When Richard Brown walked into a Valero gas station Monday morning in Taunton, Mass., it was a routine visit. Brown dropped by on occasion to purchase scratch tickets, and when he stopped in on this day he asked manager Brian Salinas for his usual $5 Blue Ice 7s ticket. But Salinas was distracted by stocking cigarettes and accidentally gave Brown a Sizzlin' 7s ticket. Brown didn't fuss over the mistake -- good thing, because his chill attitude won him $1 million. Salinas' flub also paid off, as

Hey James, Yes, here in Illinois we pay a 5% tax on lottery winning's. They take the state taxes out automatically when you claim your prize. So they took $250 out of the $5000.
