States look for winning formulas to spur lottery sales
Buy a scratch lottery ticket in Georgia, and you can win music downloads or a seat at an Atlanta Falcons game. In New York, one of the top sellers is an all-black ticket as sleek as an Armani suit. And in Texas, where they brag that everything is bigger, a single ticket goes for $50. With state budgets in crisis and lottery-financed programs like prekindergarten being considered for cuts, the pressure is on to make lottery tickets more attractive to casual scratchers and people who may have n

Misprinted Kentucky Lottery tickets lead players to mistakenly believe they won
IGT software error dashes players' hopes and excitement By Kate Northrop Quite a few Kentucky Lottery players thought they had won big time when they saw matching symbols printed on their Tic Tac Cash Fast Play tickets, but that joy quickly dissipated when they found out that those symbols were not indicators of winning the lottery at all, rather they were a result of a software error. According to the Kentucky Lottery, a vendor software issue affected some lottery vending machines in O

Study: N.C. Lottery scammers have cheated state out of $7 million
Lottery scammers have cheated North Carolina out of an estimated $7 million in back taxes and delinquent child support since 2009, a non-partisan arm of the General Assembly said. At the request of a state legislator, the Fiscal Research Division teamed up with a UNC-Chapel Hill statistician to calculate the loss following an Observer investigation that found dozens of players winning the lottery so often that their luck defies logic. For some, Illinois Lottery app makes ticket-buying too easy
When Illinois launched its first-in-the-nation lottery app in January, Matthew Ruder quickly signed up so he could jockey for jackpots with just a tap of the finger on his smartphone. It's really easy to buy lottery tickets on the big draw days, said Ruder, 40, of Pekin in central Illinois. I can just log in to it, add some money to it, buy some tickets, and then I have them right there instead of stopping at the store. It just makes it easier sometimes. State lottery officials hope the

Arkansas lottery retailers to be policed for fraud, officials say
The legislation laying the groundwork for Arkansas' lottery does not require it, but officials say they expect the lottery system to include a security division that will be on the lookout for fraud by retailers. The problem of fraud by lottery retailers gained new attention in the U.S. in the wake of a 2007 scandal in Canada, where investigators found that retailers and their employees were winning a disproportionately large number of prizes. Between 1999 and 2006, at least 78 retail owne

Nebraska woman told her winning lottery ticket is a dud
Connie Johnson got one of the very first scratch-off cards for the Nebraska Lottery's new Christmas game, Holiday Bonus Bucks. In fact, the lady at Russ's Market, where Johnson goes to get prescriptions filled, hadn't even opened the packets for the new lottery game. Have you got anything new? Johnson asked. The woman opened the new game tickets. Johnson bought four of them, drove home, did a little house work, then sat down and scratched one. It said I won $1,000! Johnson was

What airport terminals sell lottery tickets?
I purchased online lottery tickets (Powerball, MegaMillions, and a state game) from a vending machine while in a Georgia airport terminal (SAV). I was also in Ohio (DAY), and North Carolina (CLT) terminals but didn't notice anywhere tickets could be purchased. I was just wondering how many states have lottery sales at airport terminals. It seems like a win win for the lottery. Since many purchasers might be out of state, it seems logical they would not claim the bulk of winning tickets, i.e. sma
