What are your thoughts on Gift Tax?
The giver pays the gift tax. The recipient doesn't pay income tax on the gift received. If it's a distribution from a trust then the recipient pays income taxes. It still gets double taxed. Then there's the inheritance tax... Seems like the government wants all the rich people to declare London, England as their permanent residence and forgo US citizenship (the UK only taxes on domestic income not world income). An awful lot of millionaires have townhomes in London and in Rio de Janeiro, one as

Bronx mystery winner claimed half of $333M lottery jackpot
The point is that the money ANY lottery winner gets is money that millions of hard-working individuals have contributed through their purchase of lottery tickets. It is not money that any person has earned through honest work, talent, inheritance, etc. In effect, the money is public funds (not much different from taxes). The purpose of taking photos, making a public appearance, going on TV with that giant check in your hand, etc, is to say to all the contributors, Look -- here's a guy just like

What kind of STOCKS would you invest in?
If you're going to leave anything to offspring/grand kids would you think it might be better to keep it locked up the inheritance until after they reach a certain age? Something more than just 18 or 25. Perhaps with conditions such as actually earning something first and not be reliable on your late mommy or daddy's trust. Oh and yeah, there's no way you're going to be able to hide it from family, it's going to be pretty obvious who the money is coming from unless they don't know you.

Lottery winner's sweet wish
Smith, who has an aortic aneurysm, told reporters when collecting his check, It's Ida I worry for, it's leaving her behind. I would give all that back if I am allowed to still be with her because there are no shops in the cemetery are there? If the inheritance laws in the UK are anything like they are in the US he should have let Ida be the winner or formed a trust. BobP

Do all lottery winners end up being...
Someone in this thread said rich people won't respect lottery winners because they didn't have to earn it. While that is true, then how are lottery winners different from a lot of those rich people who inherited their wealth? Coming across great wealth by inheritance or luck are both referred to as "easy money." I do suppose that a lot of people who have inherited their riches work to keep it that way so they can pass it to the next generation though, and I guess as another example Paris Hilt

The final drawing for Lotto South...
Many times a beneficiary's family has to sell an annuity at a substantial discount to pay inheritance taxes due on a qualifying estate. Yes no mention of anything other than annuity on the Georgia site, also same for information I could find on Kentucky and Virginia. Our playslips for Win For Life have no box to check for Cash.

Newspaper takes a hard look at the N.J. Lottery
In response to sirbrad on 12/06/05:The whole win doesn't become a TAX! Just about 36%..the lucky winner gets to keep most of the money. Take the cash option of course, the annuity is a ripoff. Factor in inflation (the time value of money) and the often overlooked fact that if you die anytime after you start getting your annuity, the IRS levies an immediate inheritance TAX of 25% due at once...your heirs are screwed. Get a big life insurance policy for your heirs to cover the tax. It happened to

Texas Lottery Approves Mega Millions Changes
Quote: Originally posted by tg636 on March 16, 2005 ... Personally, I'm glad the $300-500 million jackpot never happened, since I don't think anyone really needs more than $30 million and having more winners makes it more fun....Well now we really get to the root of it. People who like free choice and those who don't. This isn't the CCCP is America and you should have a choice. If you don't like games with big jackpots and terrible odds then don't play. There are plenty of state games with small
