Close Encounter guys!!
Wait a minute?!?!!?!What DOES happen IF a person dies before receiving all of the payments???? That's the unanswered question of the lottery. The powerball website only says that the money is transferred to the estate. But what happens from there on? One CNN Website (http://www.cnn.com/2001/CAREER/trends/08/22/lottery.financial.planner.focus/index.html) said that if you die two years later, the IRS will garnish the payments until the entire inheritance tax is paid off with interest. But when

Inheritance of annuity payments??
I searched and found this same question posted last year...2 replies and neither provided an answer....I have a dis-agreement with a co-worker...he says that,if a lottery winner, who is receiving annuity payments, dies, the remaining payments go to the state, lottery corp or somewhere other than to their heirs...is this true in some instances?...I did find info to contradict this in some states but we were argueing specifically about Georgia...thanks...:>)

Never let lottery assign you an annuity
My understanding is that if the estate cannot pay the inheritance tax in full (on the remaining payments) within 10 months of the winner's death, the estate would not be able to receive any more annuity checks until the tax is paid, even if the estate has to sell their assets. The estate would also have to pay interest on the inheritance tax they owe. I MAY BE WRONG; please correct me if necessary.

One lottery ticket sold in New Jersey wins $521 million Mega Millions jackpot
A few things to bring to your awareness. The owner only received a 33k check for printing the winning ticket so at a 15k gift before penalties max he should be ok Again the owner didn't win the jackpot he says he knows the winner as a regular. Recipients of cash gifts don't pay taxes I guess unless its under the clause of the inheritance tax which New Jersey does impose. But this isn't considered an inheritance. I love you
