May be luck, but I see a lot of people that spends 100's on scratch offs and lose consistently. I play the way I was told and do much better then the average person. I don't win everytime I buy 4 tickets but I don't go very long without going back into profit.

what was the way that you were told?

i bought eight $30 million a year for life, two $20 win for life spectaculars.

i ended up losing on both spectaculars, getting a $100, $35, $30 and $40 from others, so basically I lost around 75 bucks.

the only reason i play the win for lifes in new york is because i view them as not a scam, let me explain. in new jersey, when you read the back of any "$1mil top prize" scratch off, you have to receive either $650k or the top prize over 20 years..

so if you win $1mil in NJ, you end up with 650k up front, then you pay 250k in taxes. So you get $400,000 after winning a million LOL.

at least if you buy the win for lifes in new york, you dont mind annuity and they dont misadvertise the prizes.

under state statutes, they must return 65% at least back in prizes, and when they know you'll always choose cash (because who wants 50k/yr for 20 years), they actually end up giving less money back than 65%, and i guess are breaking or dancing around the law (and whats fair).

so i dont play tickets like that, but thats how i fared today, will buy 8 more lifes on my next trip to NY from NJ!

and yeah ive played almost 10k probably on the $30 tickets not including the small wins which i just bought more. id rather them just eliminate all the smaller wins, and just print far less tickets OR double the jackpot prizes. nobody plays a $30 game to win $30 back, or $40, lol.

the NY site doesnt tell you how many tickets are printed per game, NJ site tells you exactly how many. but just estimating, if there were 6mil top prizes at 3.5mil to 1 odds, that means that there are around 21million tickets out there.

          21million x $30 per ticket = $630million they take in

so there are a LOT of tickets waiting to be sold and are probably boxed up. we saw two winners one from syracuse and another from long island, so my guess is theres gotta be one in manhattan :). best of luck to all of you.

i wish they would just do away with all those silly $30-$50 wins and just put out like 2 more top prizes and maybe a better tier also because the 2nd prize on this ticket is only $50k LOL.

hey mikeharness you ever win any decent prizes on the $30 ticket ? how many winners can i expect if i buy 10 of these ??

and yeah i agree, they should do away with break even prizes and add more $500's or mid tier prizes, in any state.

I play around 5-6 every few weeks id probably say, since 2008 when the game came out. The highest i've won on a single ticket was $100, its not the kind of ticket you can play to profit really.

The life's always feel like you will either break even after 10 tickets, or lose it all. Theres rarely a feeling when you will make money on the life games.

The 500,000,000 spectacular and other games like that i've often won $500 here or there. In NJ, the $20 cash blast i won $1,000 on it about 3 months ago etc.

But the life's you will always either lose it all, get half back or break even generally. But i only play it for the chance at the jackpot, i don't think i ever play a scratch off for lower or middle tier prizes because i know thats a fool's game since they only return 50-65% of all money taken in, you'll bleed forever chasing lower level stuff.

For me, i just put everything i win back right back into more games, but i play in moderation and I do only maybe 5-6 of em every few weeks.

So basically, if you buy 10 of these you will probably have something like this:

$300 in winners (maybe one $100 and several $30-$50's)

$150 in winners (maybe like a few $30's and $40's)

              or if your super unlucky..

$60 in winners (maybe like two $30's)

thats generally how i fare when i play like 10 of em. you will almost NEVER come back with a profit, and you shouldnt expect to. the terms are clear, when you include the 6 top prizes, you get back only 65% of whats taken in. that means, you probably get back like 25-35% of whats taken in, in lower level prizes maybe.

              jmho, best of luck.

a few months ago i played eight and won zero. true story. that was a WTF moment for me lol. i couldnt believe not one was a winner so i rechecked them over and over, but thats what i would the super unlucky possibility that happens rarely.

i think most of the time, i expect half of my money back from the lifes. so needless to say today when i threw down around $280 and won back $205, i was pretty happy haha.

probably, but you never know how far a losing streak will go on scratch offs. i think i remember years ago i had 10 losing $20 tickets in a row, then bought 10 more, won someting like 40 bucks, then bought 10 more and lost all that too lol. you just never know, so its best to just limit yourself to a decent amount, but don't chase foolishly, the return percentage on scratch offs is FAR greater than the numbers (lotto is 40% return what a joke), but at the same time 65% including top prizes is FAR lower than even a casino which returns 93% on slots, and how many people win slots with 93% back!?

hey, if its meant to be its meant to be. if its not, you'll realize it when your too old to care probably so you wont care much anyway lol.

i think buying consistently, however MODESTLY is your best bet. you can't buy yourself a jackpot, the odds forbid it.

i think the biggest mistake people may make is trying to chase lower level prizes, that is a complete fools game.

look at it this way, if they return 65% of all thats taken in, then the top prize for each game must consist of half of that.

so in general, you may be 30% of your purchase back in low level prizes. if you put out $100, you have to expect $30 back.

imo, the only viable strategy is to play over time, and hope to win a jackpot.

for myself, i will go back in 3 weeks maybe and buy another 8. and if someone else buys the next ticket and wins, well best of luck to him and it just wasnt meant for me :)

The $30 win a mil for life is the worst ticket of all time. I've never won more than $20 (meaning a $50 prize on the ticket), and I usually just win $5.  Horrible.

I was grocery shopping the other day and had a loose $5 on me so I put it in the machine. $2 win for life, dud. $1 loose change, dud. $2 triple payout, $100 winner! Most I've ever won on a $2 ticket.

And Jada man, I know you like to treat it like a casino and always make the ol "gotta take the shots to win" analogy, but just look at the evidence. The NY lottery sucks and is not meant to be played like that. You gotta just do a little at at time and hope to get lucky. Mikeharness said it best, you can't buy a jackpot. You gotta just play modestly over time. At least that way you won't lose huge amounts of money and you'll be in the exact same spot you are now.

Yes the $30 win for life is a really bad ticket but you have to understand why it is such a bad ticket. If you check the math in my prior post, im estimating that with the 21million tickets printed, they collect 630million for the entire game.

out of the 630million collected, they have 6 top prize winners. assuming each winner collects for 40-50 years on average, they have to pay back $300million just in top prizes.

that leaves 330million, of which im sure 50million for costs and retail fees leaves them with maybe 280million.

so lets assume they "keep" 130million and redistribute 150million to lower level prizes, which is around 25% of whats taken in.

So i guess what im saying about the $30 win for life is that its designed to be a "powerball" type ticket with either little or no lower prizes of significance. I was saying that they should just eliminate all the $30 and $35 wins and just put out 25% less tickets or add 2-3 more jackpost winners.

So when you buy that win for life you have to buy it expecting to either be the luckiest person in NYC that day and win the top prize, OR, Lose 50-75% on norm.

If your just playing a scratch off to try to get lucky and come out with an extra 100 bucks, then other games like the $10 matching numbers games or maybe even the 7's game.. things like that would be what you have to choose because they allocate WAY MORE to lower level prizes.

Still, i have to question why people buy a lot of scratch offs to chase lower level prizes. A few are fine to try your luck, but if you buy roll after roll simply to chase the lower level stuff, your dooming yourself, because they've alreadly clearly stated that you will only get 25-50% back on low level stuff, period.

The only way to win chasing anything is to reinvest towards a jackpot and try to win more than that 25-50% of your original bet(s).

                          best of luck

Not sure what this means (chasing lower level prizes). Do you mean folks who buy rolls of $1.00 and $2.00 tickets?
