I heard about something the other day that I'm curious to hear what you guys think about it or what you may have experienced....
I heard a story about a guy at work whom I don't know. (I know who he is, but I've never spoken with him.) I was told that the guy "won 400 bucks on a lottery ticket" (I don't know if it was a scratch off or an online game) and that they guy had trouble cashing it at more than one store. Supposedly the guy ended up going to the NY Lottery's Fishkill, NY claim center and cashed it there. I'm told he complained about the stores not wanting to cash the ticket at the claim center and identified them to the person who worked at the claim center.
Apparently he was given various excuses by store clerks/managers/owners as to why they couldn't cash it. Not that the wouldn't cash it, they said they "couldn't" cash it for various reasons. I was told one store offered to give him the equivalent amount of his win in "tickets" but not the cash.
I've never known what it's like to cash a winner that's more than 50 bucks, so I've never run into this kind of thing, but I'm sure it happens. I also know that retailers are supposed to cash a winner up to a max of 600 bucks. But do they?? Or how willing are they to do it???
I'm sure there are legitimate reasons why a store couldn't cash a winner at any given time. But being bounced from store to store with multiple stores saying they couldn't cash it?? Sounds like too much of a coincidence to me. G5
Turns out the above story is NOT as bad as it seemed when it was relayed to me.
I introduced myself to the guy where I work that it happened to, and I asked him about it.
He was on his way to work in the morning when he first went in a gas station to try to cash his winning scratch off ticket. They said they couldn't cash it because they had just cashed two other big winners, but they said they'd "gladly do it tomorrow". I know the gas station he stopped in, and it's VERY busy during rush hours, so I can understand them cashing two big winners early in the morning. Also, it's located about a half mile from The NY Lottery's Claim Center in Fishkill, NY. I asked him why didn't he just take the ticket to the claim center to cash it. His answer: "I drove over there, but it's not open that early in the morning".
He next stopped in a 7-11 convenience store, but they said they would give him an equal amount of tickets, not the cash. (He said that "annoyed me a little")
So he continued on to work, and when he went home after work, because he has to drive past the Claim Center on his way to and from work, he stopped in the Claim Center and cashed the ticket. He said he told the person who worked at the claim center about the place where they offered to redeem the winning ticket for new scratch off tickets but not cash, and was told "Yes, we're aware that they do that." The person at the Claim Center did not say whether or not the lottery was going to do anything about it. G5
