I can't remember the guy's name, but one of the best segments was the guy who had just lost his parents;  he owned the house, but couldn't work for some reason * and his electricity was about to be turned off or his gas had already been.  He won a pretty big lottery, nothing HUGE but a good one.

*I don't mean to be insensitive, but he was a little "simple".  He could function all right, but....He was lucky to have a good friend who helped him with his money, was nice to see the man didn't take advantage of him.

He started living in a fairly nice motel, nothing really fancy and he ate out almost all the time.  He did have a small fridge and microwave in his room.  When he went out to eat, he sometimes invited his good friend and he always got an extra meal take-out so he could feed some cats.   The reason his story touched my heart was because it was good to see someone who was really helped by the lottery, yet it was more than a little sad to see how he was alone except for the one friend and a bunch of stray cats. (that sort of hit close to home for me)  At first, I thought he should fix up his house and live in it, be cheaper in the long run, but he said the house held bad memories for him, his parents being gone and being so broke and alone.  Also, at least in the motel, he had maid service and human contact and was close enough to walk to restaurants and other stores. (I don't think he could drive)  Like I said, one of my fav. segments of the series.

James Gatsky...he moved out of that motel and got him a nice house in the suburbs and even got a car...his friend J.R. was still helping him out I saw it on another show called Jackpot! Overnight millionaires...Ive only seen it on the destination channel on direct tv....but I also read he was picking up prostitutes one time dont know if he still is hope J.R. got on his butt about that one

I read up a lot on her and watched her videos. She claimed she won becuase she visualize winning the jackpot.  Either she knew something that others don’t or it could be a bunch of BS. But then it got me thinking. What would she have to gain by claiming she won using the Law of Attraction (If anyone believes in that). Just to make herself look crazy or to promte her beleifs?  Plus when you think about, what makes winners win the lotto? Is it luck or something else that we can’t perceive in our reality. Mabey she was really on to something...who knows ?

Then some people would win when they are in dire need. Like the last powerball winners who lost their home in Hurricane Sandy. Mabey there is something afterall working behind the scenes of our reality.

The only smart one I have seen so far on that show is that guy who won like 80M and when he was asked what he wants to do with it he said he will turn it into like 200M and he said he was doing pretty well with investing etc. He was that guy who lived by that river.

Brad Duke. He won 220M and got back about 80M, and he wanted to turn it into a billion dollars. Don't know why he would want that much money. I hear his current net worth is somewher under 200M. Will have to go a long way to reach that billion.

Funny thing is, his story of how he won is simmilar to Cynthia Stafford. He wrote a check out to himeself and noted on it that he won the lotto and he beleived. Stafford wrote down that she won and she really beleived that it came true. Which it did.

She wasted quite a bit of money, she should of just bought a nice house and maybe a car and invested the money and live out her life in luxary but she thought she was now a celebrity.

She did buy a house and some luxury cars. A Bentley convertible and a few others.

Thanks, B2B.  I just Googled him (his name is James Gatzke) and found out some more about him.  I was close on the utilities - no phone, no heat and no water - he said in an interview he hadn't had a shower in nine months before winning.  He had trouble collecting b/c the state officials weren't sure if he was competent enough.  He won a $5.5 million Illinois lottery, opted for the annual payments of $211,000/ after tax $151,920.   I was wrong about not driving, the article said he's bought at least three cars since winning and drives all over to find the best meals.  He's helping out the elderly neighbors who helped him out while he was down and he's donated quite a bit to charity, and bought squad cars for some police dept. that lost theirs in a tornado.  I didn't read anything about hookers, but he did say in the interview that he liked to frequent strip clubs and had no intention of marrying.

One of the Google results was this thread:

I think he called "get cash now"  right after his first check was gone.

Yeah, seems like I read that he would be 70 the year of his last payment.   That's probably the best thing for someone *young* but for old coots like me, I'm takin' the cash option.  I doubt I have another 30 yrs. on this mortal coil and if I AM blessed to live that long, I prob. won't even know my name as so to be able to endorse those last few checks.

They mentioned the strippers and escorts on the HBO documentary "Lucky."  He seems like a really nice guy so his charitable donations are not a surprise to me. He really loved those cats alot.

I love those shows about lottery winners. I watched one such show several years back (can't remember what it was called) and the main thing I got out of it was how much winning a big JP does change your life, despite you not wanting it to. One lucky fellow in the UK had a bunch of friends who were all motorbike enthusiasts. They often went for rides in the countryside and were all good mates. After the win, he bought them all new bikes and thought they'd carry on as before but he said that most of them became distant and it never was the same. I found that quite sad. But it was a good dose of reality.
