That's close to what I'd like to do, too; I have a 10% plan: 10% for my foundation, up to 10% for a suitable property, up to 10% - no more!- on things I've always wanted or vacations to places I've always wanted to go, etc. Depending upon the JP and take-home, I *might* invest 10% in a high risk investment, but the rest is going into the safest place I can find - I'm not all that fussed about trying to double/triple my money, although I'd love to be able to live off the interest or at least not tap into the principal too much or often. I'd probably feel differently if I was 30 yrs. old w/ a family, but I'm not and I don't.

My bet is on Cynthia Stafford to be broke soon.
She won $112 million, took $60M after tax and split that 3 ways with family. But on her $20M she bought a mansion and is looking at a private jet ($5-$8M), a Rolls-Royce and a Bugatti Veyron. Not to mention shopping on Rodeo Drive.
She has it in her mind that she won $112 Million and she is spending accordingly, even though she only got $20M. Recipe for disaster IMHO.

I agree! she is trying to keep up with all the Hollywood elites and will undoubtedly keep throwing money to keep up this image. I think her boyfriend/husband/trainer will drain her finances as well.

I concur. When the boyfriend said he wanted the Bugati for his wedding "gift" that prett much summed him up. I guess they did get married so what she started he will finish. Hollyweird, is a bunch of phonies.

According to a quick search, the trainer ended up getting married to her back in 2010. He played his card right and is now entitled to half of her assets unless she had him sign a pre-nup. He is also abour 14 years younger than her.
I agree with you that I didn't think he was straight either.

You're probably right. It was my initial thought when I saw this episode years ago. But if MTV Cribs and the Real Housewives franchises have taught me is that people can pretend to be rich on reality TV and can be convincing about it. I don't believe she was really going to buy a jet. At least not one in that price range. I figured out that if she wasn't bankrupt yet then she wasn't spending as much as she was pretending to spend.
Remember all those people on Cribs who used to show off their car collections, only to find out later that they'd rented the cars just for the filming. Or the houses on Million Dollar Rooms that the owners couldn't afford and used the show for free publicity. And of course almost every person on Real Housewives who all pretend to be wealthy when in fact they're all dead broke. I think Cynthia works really hard pretending she's uber wealthy. At least I hope that that's what she's doing.

You make good points, Teddi.
Maybe the show should have focussed on the fact that she rescued her deceased brother's children from foster care after her win, rather than on her conspicuous consumption.
I had the feeling that the spending was to impress the boyfriend, who's stated goal was to be half of the latest Hollywood "power couple".
I wish them well. I can't imagine having it all an then losing it. I think it would be worse than never having it at all.

I agree! Rescuing her brother's children was a great story, but this show does seem to only want to focus on spending, spending, spending. I remember the one episode with the gay couple who won 5,000,000 dollars or around that, and they were looking at 4,000,000 dollar houses. That was insane, and I believe that was only done for the show. I do find stories about lottery winners interesting but this show does seem lay it on thick.

Actually if I recall correctly, this was the second show with Cynthia Stafford, an update. The first show did focus on how having the money enabled her to get the brothers children. It took some time, I think she got the first youngest two and then told the courts she could afford and there is no reason for the others to remain in foster care, they all needed to be together. She did say that she was treated very differently when they knew she had money, so I think this may havd been an ongoing struggle up to the time she won the money. They showed her at her old house as well This is a real good story so I hope she reins in the husband, even though he said that was what he was trying to do with Cynthia, but then states he wants one of the most expensive cars, the Bugati !
I agree, from rags to riches to rags would be horrendous, oh the guilt of "if only".

That gay couple was one of my favorite stories. They were getting themselves into more debt than they had before they won the money. The multi-million dollar house hunt made no sense to me. None. I couldn't figure out what they were thinking, because the guy that actually won the money seemed smart enough to know better but in any case they were highly entertaining.

I think the show focuses on what the winners want to focus on. I don't think TLCML does any kind of investigative reporting ahead of time. But I'm guessing that the winners who aren't quirky and/or flamboyant are given a backseat to those who are. David Lee Edwards was almost broke when the show featured him. He borrowed money to buy some of the things at the house he was showing off. Anytime a shows only purpose is to highlight wealth, people go to any length to outdo others.
I've read articles on Cynthia that make no mention of her splitting the money 3 ways and that she used $30 million of her $112 million win to start her production company. How would she be able to spend $30 million when she only took home 20? There's a lot of misinformation out there about Cynthia and I can't help but think that she's behind much of it. I hope she's spending less than she appears to because she has 5 kids who are dependent on her. Her losing everything will have more repercussions than someone without children.
And I agree, winning and losing everything is a hundred times worse than never winning. IMO

The house hunt was fake , they had no intention of buying any of those houses.I remember someone who knows them saying that the producers ask them to film doing lavish things. I think it was also mention that they have financial advisors and are very careful about how much they spend.
Its not entertaining people talking about their real boring life, everyone wants to see the extravagant and reckless people. So the producers encourage them to play it up for the cameras.
Cynthia is different because she is in Hollywood has a kept husband, multiple children and has a sister who is always trying to talk badly about her. Her money won't last if she tries to keep up with other Hollywood people .At least she has educational trusts for the children set.
