Powerball

By Kate Northrop

The Powerball Product Group announced Monday that a new add-on feature will accompany the game in some states when it launches its third weekly drawing, starting Mon., Aug. 23.

The feature is called Double Play, and it gives players in certain jurisdictions another chance to match their Powerball numbers in a second drawing with a top cash prize of $10 million, a press release says.

"America's jackpot game is picking up the pace to keep up with player demand — going from two drawings a week to six, if you include Double Play," Powerball Product Group Chair and Missouri Lottery Executive Director May Scheve Reardon said. "Players have let us know they want to play for bigger jackpots and cash prizes, and we want Powerball to deliver on their expectations."

Players in 13 lottery jurisdictions will have the ability to add the feature to their Powerball ticket for an additional $1 per play. Those jurisdictions are: Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, and Washington.

The Double Play feature may be offered in additional states in the future, depending on whether lotteries choose to offer them in their jurisdictions. All 48 U.S. lotteries will sell tickets for the new Monday night drawings.

"The Powerball Product Group anticipates adding the Monday Powerball drawing will result in larger, faster-growing jackpots," the press release stated. "The group also expects to see an increase in the number of cash prizes and jackpots awarded on an annual basis."

The first Monday drawing is scheduled for Aug. 23, 2021 at 10:59 pm EST. Odds of winning prizes will not change following the addition of the third drawing. The Power Play add-on feature that multiplies non-jackpot prizes will still be available for purchase at an additional $1 per play in all states except California.

Powerball is played by choosing five numbers from 1 to 69 and one Powerball number from 1 to 26. Tickets are $2 per play and are available in 45 states, plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings currently take place every Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 pm EST.

Lottery website USA Mega publishes the winning Powerball numbers within minutes of each drawing, and also includes detailed information about each drawing, including the official drawing video, number of winners in each prize category, news, and upcoming jackpot amounts.

So why not give the players what we really want:

1)   Starting jackpots of $40 million and minimum increases of $10 million between drawings.

2)   My big pet peeve...make the secondary prize comparable to the Powerball #.   If 10 is drawn (rare) or anything over two, the secondary prize still stays @ $2 million (except for California).

Glad KLC is not participating, even if they did I'm out.

"Players have let us know they want to play for bigger jackpots and cash prizes, and we want Powerball to deliver on their expectations."

I really would love to read these focus group reports and unsolicited communications from players to MUSL that show that players are clamoring for sh1t odds, higher ticket prices, and lower starting jackpots. I'm sure these reports and communications from "real players" totally exist and are not completely fabricated by the marketing department.

Union Plaza casino Las Vegas, changed its Keno games to red game / green game for another dollar, sounds familiar huh?

It was originally like that and right after COVID hit they took that away in a split. It has been mind numbing. Every state has also said that they have taken in record revenues. So its just a big FU to the players.

Thanks Kate for the info on the USA MEGA website. I had never heard of it. Sounds like that will quickly become my SECOND favorite Lottery website. .....lol.

Another cash drop of powerball to add 1 dollars ticket option.

You are better off buying crypto currency like dogecoin, Bitcoin and other coin strikes rich playing extra 1 dollars tickets

They need to be served with an injunction to prevent this.

It's only available in 13 states. So if a person has been playing the same sets of numbers for years, and our numbers come up in double play, and we weren't able to play because our jurisdiction doesnt offer it, we have essentially been giving them our money all these years with no hope of winn8ng..chances that my number s come up on double play and a second time in regular draw are extremely slim.  I am looking into this...will update when I have an answer.

Unless someone has an answer.

At least the states that are offering PowerBall DoublePlay are still offering the PowerPlay. 😉

Playing the same set of numbers for years is no guarantee you going to win Utahplayer. Years ago a 80 something woman from Florida named Gloria MacKenzie was allowed to cut in line to purchase a qp. She ended up being the only winner of a $500 + mil jackpot.

Some at the time felt that had Gloria not cut in line, the winner of that jackpot would have been this person who allowed Gloria to get her ticket ahead of her. Others were saying Gloria should have compensated the person for her kind act...what do you think?

Speler

How many machines do they have? One, two or more? Is the same machine used for the second drawing?
Isn't that becoming to much, playing more often?

There's nothing illegal about one or more states offering a lottery game that is not available in other states. People in Washington cannot play Florida Lotto, and people in California can't buy the multiplier option on PB and MM. Life goes on.

You live in Utah where there is no lottery anyway, so where exactly are you going to sue?

A lot of Utahans cross the border into Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado or Arizona to buy lottery tickets. Not that suing would do any good. Each state follows their own rules with their lotteries and as long as PB and MM goes along with it, not much anyone can do.

You'd have to be stupid to play the $1 Double Play option since the top prize is set at a reduced amount of $10 million. Better off buying a second regular ticket and go for the full jackpot.

With that said I'm already being pushed out of playing the lottery due to increased costs. Already stopped playing Lucky For Life because they took the game daily - If I can't afford to cover every draw I don't play.

I like CA parimutuel odds.  No extra money for added features & uncapped 5+0 prize.  CA PB 5+0 prize last draw was 4 million and still growing.

There's no guarantee that the lady who allowed her to cut in line would've won either.

mhmhm.

With $1 Double Play, in the unlikely even that you win the top prize, you win $10M cash.

I would not complain .....

In the much more likely event that you win one of the subsidiary prizes, you win much more than in the base game (for example the two bottom prizes are $7 for a $1 wager, instead of $4 for a $2 play).

So, you get a second chance to win a life changing prize (at least $10M for me would be life changing) and at the same time you win much more than in the base game .... Would not call that "stupid" ...... It is a different risk profile .....

A one second delay would have seen her get a different set of numbers.

I anticipate the price of a standard ticket increasing from $2 to $3. All in favor of increasing those jackpots.

If it costs $2 for one ticket and then $1 for Powerplay then what a $1 for Double play too.  That is alot of money for no winnings because I play one or two lines usually and that is $8 to win nothing because I can go months without winning a single prize here in Oregon.  I know that Oregon does not offer this option and I hope that it never comes here because I would be just making powerball rich and no winnings to show for it.-weshar75

Yes, there are times that your secondary prize is higher than states with Powerplay/Megaplier.  But when it is won for a paltry sum my head shakes for those players.  Case in point, last night's Mega Million secondary prize just over $140K---ugh.

Powerball Product Group.   What are they?    A consortium between Iowa and where it is drawn in Florida?

Just a thought hit a few brain cells.   IF THEY had dropped the 1-69 from to 1-50 and Powerball # from 1-26 to say 1-20...then it might appeal to more players.   None on LP I'm sure.   But no, good old greedy PB kept it the same, so the idea sucks.   It'll probably fizzle out.

Next thing you know they'll close FL draw site and just go to RNG.

Whenever I play PB, I add The Power Play option, but I don't play very frequently.  When I do play, I'm actually playing for the second place prize of 2 million simply because it carries 11 million to 1 odds versus 292 million to 1 odds to win the jackpot.  Yes the second place prize is fixed at 2 million dollars, but I buy three lines containing the same set of five numbers. (The three lines on my ticket are identical and it costs me $9.00)  So theoretically, I could win six million dollars if my five numbers match those drawn.

So, my question is; If I add the Double Play feature too, will I win thirty million dollars?  And yes, my $9.00 ticket just became a $12.00 ticket, so I might be playing less frequently than I did in the past. Would they even have 30 million in the prize pool to pay me?  My gut is telling me they'd try to limit what they'd have to pay me. There's probably something in the official rules about that. G5

I was a bit curious on this new double play option....soooooooooooooooo,I meander on over to our new and improved site, here in the great volunteer state. Why would anyone spend an extra buck to try and win 10 million with the same (1/292,000,000) odds as the big jackpot? The lotteries preach "responsible" gambling ( no such thing) and then call us all fools in the same breath.

ncantoral's avatarncantoral

if we have a system for the lottery and we need an accurate record of the lottery history, do the double play numbers count towards the powerball history of drawings?

We wouldn't get the huge jackpots if they reduced both white and red numbers.

For years I've been advocating the idea to decrease the white numbers to make it easier to win the million.  It's been ages since anyone won even that in Idaho.  Many people would be happy with a million, and I'd be more likely to add the multiplier if there were a better chance of doubling that to 2 million.

But increase the red numbers to make it harder to win the top prize, thus giving us the humongous jackpots that some of us want.  And the huge jackpots that bring in the huge profits the lottery wants.

Win win win, one game that makes everyone happy.

ieatdirt

Judging by what's going on (or isn't) obviously PB needs to concentrate on running the draws they already have and worrying less about introducing new crap.

Is she seriously the world lottery president?

she has to be the most overpaid and under-useful lottery president ever. She literally does nothing and the tn lottery website continues to be the lousiest of all the lottery sites I've used.

the tn lottery app is more of a joke.

as for this Pb option, it's clear I'm not the only one who is confused. I'm so close to finally quitting powerball.

Sadly , no.

on the tn lottery site it says "The Double Play top prize will be divided equally among all winning top prize plays.
