After the Big Win

This time she is served criminal summons for threats and harassment

Includes video report

The Brunswick County Sheriff's Office has served a misdemeanor criminal summons to North Carolina's $188 million Powerball winner, Marie Holmes.

According to court documents, Lorna Marlowe has accused Holmes of making threatening and harassing phone calls on Jan. 10. Marlowe filed the complaint that same day.

The criminal summons alleges Holmes threatened to "inflict bodily harm" on Marlowe. It also states Holmes "repeatedly for the purpose of harassing" called Marlowe.

Holmes is set to appear in Brunswick County court on Feb. 12 at 9 a.m. If she does not appear, an order for her arrest may be issued and she may be held in contempt of court.

Holmes has recently made headlines in connection to her boyfriend, Lamarr "Hot Sauce" McDow, being arrested and bailing out on high bonds.

(See N.C. lottery winner bails out convict fiancé fourth time, Lottery Post, Jan. 4, 2016.)

In July 2015, Holmes was cited with drug possession at the home she and McDow shared on Boverie Street. Authorities went to the home to arrest McDow for violating his pretrial release agreement, and searched the residence after noticing a strong smell of marijuana. Holmes is expected to appear in court Feb. 2 in connection to those charges, according to the District Court calendar.

Holmes provided one of the three winning tickets on Feb. 23, 2015, and was presented with a $188 million check. She chose to receive the lump sum payout worth approximately $127 million, or nearly $88 million after taxes.

Well, we know Hot Sauce (her financé) was arrested 3 months before she won Powerball, and still sitting in jail while she claimed the prize.  The first thing did after claiming the jackpot was to use the money to bail him out.  So there was trouble in paradise before she won.

You know how winners are always aksed what they will do with the money?  How funny would it have been to hear her say, "I'm going to bail out my boyfriend!" at the news conference?

America is a litigious society. We sue each other at the drop of a hat. All jackpot winners should move into a gated community and join the local club. Then you will surround yourself with the rich and will not be in court as often as Marie will be.

I Agree! with the LP members on this one.

The sad part about this is, her kids will wind up paying the price for her ignorance. Eventually, she will wind up in the pen. Her choice of friends is terrible and her kids are being influenced by her actions.

she won 188 million. these problems she is running into are about as significant as having a couple of tree branches fall on her lawn. she can throw money at any problem and get rid of it. there are no indications she is out buying yachts, mansions, or expensive vehicles which is what dooms most lottery winners. granted she should get rid of this guy but he probably has some kind of hold on her. i don't know. no one does. character flaws yes, but she is well positioned.

Jesus Christ, she keeps making me revise my estimates on her going broke. I am beginning to think she may have no money by the end of this year. I'm normally against the annuity but in this case I will make an exception, people like her shouldn't be handed a massive check like that coming from nothing, like handing a monkey a loaded gun. Bash

Easy to judge. No doubt her lifestyle is not the greatest, but she was probably the one who worked.

Hmm, I wonder what happens in a town in the South...she gets pulled over, cop (breaking her headlight with a baton) "Hey little missy, looks like we have a Dee-fective autoMObeeel light here. That will cost you 2 million $$"

It's not even worth commenting or trying to give her advice. She's a lost cause.

Now that the lottery universe gods have been good and given people who want to waste their good fortune away it's time for me to win.  I'll show how to just keep quiet and disappear take care of close family, and live very comfortably the rest of my life.

I agree Sookie, this train wreck isn't worth the effort.  And I want to say to those nitwits who won part of the billion dollar lottery and immediately go on the Today Show "Are you outchore gaddamm minds??  Give ME the money.  I'll show you how it's suppose to be done!".

Yea, but every time she's in the news there's less places where she's unknown.

should have moved as soon as she won, I will.

Heard on 20/20 that Stafford woman who won PB in 2007 has filed bankruptcy. And she didn't have any of these issues. So my guess is that this woman will be broke in half the time.

Why she stays in that town is beyond me. Time for her to load up the kids and say goodbye to it all, boyfriends and all.

Cynthia Stafford, Sharon Terrabassi, Andrew Jackson "Jack" Whittaker, David Lee Edwards. These are just a few of the 70% of Lottery winners who blow through their winnings in about five years.

Easy come, Easy go. Fast money goes fast.

There are those winners who could not say "NO".

 No No

I think she spend 21 million so far on bail just for Mr. Sauce. That doesn't include her own legal issues. I think she will get a portion of that money back even if he's convicted. I guess it's up to the local government whether he is worth more as a walking blank check for them out on the street because they know she will pay whatever it takes.

To compound matters if he goes to jail she will have to pay to protect him. Usually in jail your color/crew provides you with protection, not so much when everyone knows your baby mother is sitting on some stacks.

Hopefully these are just expensive lessons that she will learn before the money is gone.

According to some media outlets Marie Holmes boyfriend is involved with Lorna Marlowe. This is certainly betrayal because "Hotsauce"  is the father of Marie Holmes youngest child.Hotsauce did a recent interview  with mademoire and several media outlets reported Marie holmes purchased him a new truck, tow servicing business, and $15,000 rolex watch and bracelet .Its very obvious this guy is using her ,and i hope she dumps him and move on with her children. They also moved from her new home  in  NorthCarolina as neighbors and association complained about the comings and goings of people at the home .They neighbors stated they want be missed and glad they are gone.Hot sauce said there are victims of racism  but we all know better..SMH..

 No No

I keep seeing that 70% figure tossed around in here and in many website articles, but the very few that cite a source refer to a The National Endowment for Financial Education estimation and none that I've seen have linked to the specific article on NEFE.  (Here's one on the NBC website, supposedly a reputable source of news.  Yeah, right.)   Most of the articles that do link to a source are sending the reader to some other website that only repeats that NEFE estimates the 70% number.  I've used the NEFE search function and found nothing for "lottery winners" and only 3 results for "lottery" and they were all to another website and none of the articles on that site mentioned that 70% statistic, only that smart investing is a much better strategy for growing one's money.   One Forbes article has some statistics on lottery winners declaring bankruptcy (1%/yr, twice the natl. avg.)and the happiness of British lottery winners (they're generally happier with“significantly better psychological health.”) and how much of their fortune they had spent after five years (44% they say).

If you or anyone else can link me to a more believable, factual source of that statistic, I'd appreciate it.

Other than going back through each segment on every episode of TLCML and following up since they won,  I don't think that even 70% of the winners featured on that program lost all their winnings after five years.  Personally, I think it's more likely that 70% of all articles written about lottery winners are about their misfortunes.   "If it bleeds, it leads."
