Cashier steals a $3 million winning lottery ticket from customer — will this end well?

By Kate Northrop

MARTINSVILLE, N.J. — Today, Lottery Post published a new installment of the Weekly Roundup series featuring some of the most prominent lottery stories in the month of May.

This month has seen a wide variety of notable news, from feel-good winners' stories to instances where winning the lottery might come with a negative consequence.

One instance saw an Australian man win $15 million in the lottery and subsequently land in a never-ending court battle.

Perhaps the most divisive story taking the lottery world by storm this month revolves around a Massachusetts cashier who was indicted after stealing a man's winning lottery ticket worth $3 million and claiming it as her own.

But don't let that take away from the fact that winning the lottery can do a lot of good. A North Carolina woman gave herself the greatest housewarming gift ever after becoming a first-time homeowner, and a Scottish man entered retirement with a well-timed bonus.

Our Weekly Roundup series on YouTube breaks down all the latest stories, game changes, and most important moments so you can stay up-to-date and in-the-know about everything happening in the lottery world.

Being required to show up in person at a state lottery office with a ticket what has won millions reminds me of John Wick 4 when he had to show up to a challenge on top of a hill. He had to fight his way up the staircase because people knew where he was going and why he was there.

It seems unsafe knowing that the people that go to a state lottery office become targets. Players can become targets from the time they buy tickets at retailer. All lotteries should give people the option to claim their winnings anonymously. For me, I hope my attorney is John Wick enough to make it to the lottery office safely to cash in my ticket, hopefully without people willing to do whatever to steal it.

It's terrible how low some people will stoop in order to get some money. No honor among thieves here.

* Huzzah Kate, your piece was hilarious 😂. From the kangaroos looking for a quick  K'O to those pair of dogs doing their version of saber rattling. You made my weekend.

My comment will remain the same .....

I wonder why State lotteries don't put the same effort when a winner does not come forward to claim their prize.

You know, check the video at the exact purchase time and put out some photos of the winner 🤷🏾‍♂️

Or is it because the State gets to keep the money 🤔

Nway, what do I even know 🤣🤣

Yeah. I have to agree. If you can do it for one then you should do it for the other.

I believe it is not the state's job to hunt down lottery winners. If a person takes the time and money to buy a ticket, it shouldn't be that hard to go online and check the ticket. Only takes a minute and a couple of clicks.

Can't speak for all states, but Tx Lottery does not keep unclaimed money.

"Unclaimed prizes revert back to the state for programs authorized by the Texas Legislature, including the Foundation School Fund and Fund for Veterans' Assistance, which are the primary beneficiaries of the Texas Lottery. Government Code 466.408 sets forth the use of unclaimed prize money.Apr 20, 2023.
Actually, it's good for business and sales when there is a big winner that lotteries use to drum up more sales, as their job is to sell tickets.
