Well, raffles have the best odds of winning the top prize, but generally have terrible odds at winning any prize. Though Michigan's raffle is one of the better ones at overall odds at 1:99.7 (as opposed to say, 1 in 1,000). But even then, with 50 tickets, you're still looking at roughly 50/50 odds at getting anything back. So the best odds argument the lotteries use really is a misnomer, because it's only good when looking at the top prize odds in comparison to other games.

How to calculate odds
My state posts odds online for new scratch-off games. But once the game has been sold for a while, I assume the odds have changed. Is that correct? So, for example, if there were 10 of the top prize available at the beginning, but 6 have been won, how do you calculate the odds for the remaining 4 top prizes? More important, how do you calculate the odds for all remaining prizes as a group? Thanks.

Are you suggesting that your odds are worse simply because the drawing is done electronically? Guesser is right about people being misguided about what better odds are, but I think it's more than just some people. And the people who won the Powerball gave a damn about the odds? I don't even think they knew what the odds were. Odds are useless. The guy bitten by the shark doesn't care about the odds against that happening! When I win the MM tonight, my not knowing the odds will not have mattered. You are lucky, or you are not! Plunk down you five dollars, put it under the newspaper, and look at when you hear there was a winner at the store you bought you tickets from. Odds? Same impact as passing gas

I never consider the odds. I win, or I don't. The odds don't matter one single bit. The thousands of previous winners beat the odds, and the next winner will beat the odds. They don't mean didly squat! I can't win if I don't bet, and if I win, who cares about the odds. If I lose, who cares about the odds.
