Two friends had been roommates for several years. They had agreed to split the rent and utilities every month and neither one had ever come up short.
Then PB went to $2 tickets and the one friend was a player. The rent was due and he asked his roommate to cover him this time.
The roommate said, "You've never been short, what's up?"
The player said, "Well, PB has went to $2 and the jackpot is pumped way up and I'm playing this sytem that calls for $100 lines of numbers and my pet numbers."
The other said, "Yeah, so, what's that got to do with the rent?"
The player said, "Well I've got the money for the PB, just not the rent."
Those who run the lotteries love it when players look for consistency in something that's designed not to have any. So many systems, so many theories, so few jackpot winners.
There is one and only one 'proven' system, and that is to book the action. No matter the game, let the players pick their own losers.

As long as you're buying QPs, it really doesn't matter when you play because you'll never know when you don't play. For the people playing pet numbers, they must spend $104 playing MM or $208 playing PB next year unless they want to take the risk of their numbers being drawn when they decide to be cheap.
We all know how difficult it is to hit a jackpot but your 1 ticket a few times a year method of play might prove to you how difficult it is to win anything.
That is why i play with the following playing strategy in order to control my spending.I get to play big whenever i want to without putting extra money on the table.I Basically save lottery lines to play more or less with the three playing methods.I have won more than 5 new york take 5 second prizes by using this style of playing.I posted one of my winning take 5 tickets here on lottery post.So i decided to use this style of playing with jackpot games that offer life changing amounts as compared to ny take 5 which are very small jackpots.
Here is a summary of the playing methods.
Lottery stop loss limit=$60 annually with three playing methods starting in 2012.
1) Playing more often for less lines
2) Playing less often for more lines
3) Playing less often for less lines
I will be playing the lottery using these playing methods for a jackpot win starting in 2012. Lottery stop loss limit=$60 annually.
"A stop loss limit is very important and I urge anyone that plays to have a stop loss limit to protect their large sum of ready gambling money. You should have a stop loss limit to avoid losing too much money on a bad day. While setting up a loss limit is a great idea in theory, there are plenty of gamblers who won't have the will power to stick with these limits. These are the same people who will never make any money or come close to breaking even in gambling. It's definitely hard to stick with loss limits because there is so much temptation to keep gambling no matter which way Lady Luck is sending the money. The better you are at sticking with your loss limits over the long run, the more successful and happy you will be at the end of game play."

You can still play 5 lines next year in the new powerball game matrix as long as you
2) Play less often for more lines. You will not be able to enter every powerball jackpot drawing, but you will cover more lines whenever you play within a $40 to $60 Lottery stop loss limit without spending extra money.
5*2=$10*6 months=$60 if you play monthly for 6 months out of 12 months.Your goal is to win a jackpot, so it does not matter when you play as long as you win a jackpot someday.
Or you can play 5 lines=$10 in winter, 5 lines=$10 in spring, 5 lines=$10 in summer and 5 lines=$10 in the fall for a total of $40 dollars.

Actually, that's not exactly true, THRIFTY.

I do not know how you do it THRIFTY. Because I spend $10 on mega millions and $10 on powerball every week twice a week and still my hitting numbers off my QP's are hard to come bye. Good luck to you THRIFTY!-weshar75

Hi THRIFTY, What game(s)? One big lotto game would be 104 draws. $60 does not sound like much elbow room.
One thing I do is to play pick3, roll over wins into the high odds games, and it seems to stretch my gambling bankroll further. Run some backtest scenarios and see how it might pan out.

Yes $60 is enough, I don't have to play the lottery everyday in order to win a jackpot.

For Thrifty's strategy to work, they should only buy tickets for drawings when a winning ticket is sold. There were 104 MM drawings the past year and only 11 produced a jackpot winner. There were 93 drawings when it didn't matter how many they bought because no winning ticket was sold. The 175 million to 1 odds against winning a jackpot are bad enough, but now they'll have to factor in the 89.5% chance the jackpot winning ticket won't be sold. These figures are assuming all the jackpot winning tickets were QPs so actual chances of any given drawing producing a jackpot winning QP ticket is less than 10%.
On a $1 ticket the odds against winning just $9 is 844 to 1 so in reality, Thrifty's $60 annual budget is the amount they are willing to spend on a dream no matter how or win they spend it.

Cool, I do not play every draw either. On big lottery sometimes I am way off from a draw, get disgusted and wait it out for a long while, watch for a pattern to popup which I might be able to take advantage of.
I usually set minimum goals for each game. For example if I want to play my California Fantasy 5 game, my reasonable target goal is a "3 of 5" match. Payouts are usually about $15 to $20, therefore I might chase 20 to 30 draws, if I do not hit my goal, then I simply give up on the game for 4 to 6 months, or a year depending on how well I do on pick3/pick4. With those games I usually roll a portion of winnings into play on the bigger lotteries to help offset those losses.

There wasn't much to get when this topic started because simple math tells us on a MM $60 annual budget, at the most you can only be in less than 60% of drawings. And that's the limit for "playing more often for less lines". I have no clue what "playing less often for less lines" means because anything less than one line is zero and buying one ticket in less than 60 drawings means they didn't spend the entire $60 budget.
