US-Russian paratroopers joint exercise in Colorado?

These people aren't stupid enough to think this is a good idea, but they'll be long transferred or retired when it all blows up in the face of the citizenry 10 years from now.

Do I need to enumerate the ways this is a bad idea?  Cussing Face

I wonder what's in the little section that's missing.  Skeptical

Indian Airports scanning arrivals for gold

Maybe it should say "scaMMing arrivals ...".

Travellers to India are being searched for gold ornaments by customs officials at major airports across the country.

An Indian law dating back to the 1960s states that those travelling to India are supposed to pay tax for carrying any gold valued at more than Rs20,000 (Dh1,379).

What’s strange is that a man is allowed to carry 50 per cent less gold in comparison to a female traveller, on his person as jewellery.

Indian airports have been conducting stringent checks on most travellers and asking them to shell out duty for any gold ornaments over the stipulated amount.

Last week two Indian men, including a groom who was on his way to India for his wedding, was stopped at the airport by customs.

“I had to negotiate and argue with them for almost 45 minutes to an hour," said Santosh from Bangalore.

---------------

Travelers to India are being scanned for gold and gold ornaments in the country's major airports in an effort to collect duties on gold amounts exceeding a law-defined maximum.

According to an Indian law enacted in 1967, people traveling to India are obliged to pay a duty for carrying any gold ornaments valued at more than Rs20,000 (roughly $375 at today's exchange rate); for males the allowed amount is lower by half: Rs10,000 (roughly $185).

At current gold prices, the amount of gold one can carry without paying additional custom duties is tiny. An Indian woman on average wears a gold chain weighing 16-25 grams at least, which at the current price would be worth at least US$845-1,320 and exceeds the tax-free allowance.

Strange how the "1st worlders" have been conned into the belief that paper and data entries are money, but the "3rd worlders" still know better.

Ah, the party of integrity ...

Fake credentials and other shenanigans couldn't prevent an upset in NV, this time.

Won't even bother with a link for this. Typing fake delegate slate into the search engine will do the job.

Tip of the hat to Maine, as well. Cheers

RNC sends warning letter to NV GOP

In a letter delivered Wednesday to GOP Chairman Michael McDonald, the RNC's chief counsel said if Ron Paul delegates are allowed to take too many slots for the national convention, Nevada's entire contingent may not be seated in Tampa.

DHS to test subway bio sensors

http://boston.cbslocal.com/2012/04/30/homeland-security-to-test-biological-sensors-in-mbta-tunnels/

BOSTON, MA (CBS) – The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will be releasing bacteria into the MBTA tunnels to test the safety of the subway.

The DHS has installed sensors in the MBTA system to detect biological agents and they’ve been testing to see how the air moves.

Now they want to release particles in the tunnels to see how well the sensors work.

The tests will be held at stations in Cambridge and Somerville.

Federal officials say they test the subway sensors by releasing dead bacteria called B-subtilis. They say it is used in food supplements, has been rigorously tested and has no adverse health effects for low exposure in healthy people.

Another slow-kill poison on its way into the food chain

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/26/business/energy-environment/dow-weed-killer-runs-into-opposition.html?pagewanted=1&_r=3&pagewanted=all

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504763_162-57423245-10391704/genetically-modified-crops-resistant-to-24-d-spur-debate-calls-for-labeling/

(sections taken from NYT article)

Dow Corn, Resistant to a Weed Killer, Runs Into Opposition (It should be opposed)

To Jody Herr, it was a telltale sign that one of his tomato fields had been poisoned by 2,4-D, the powerful herbicide that was an ingredient in Agent Orange, the Vietnam War defoliant. “The leaves had curled and the plants were kind of twisting rather than growing straight,” Mr. Herr said of the 2009 incident on his vegetable farm in Lowell, Ind. He is convinced the chemical, as well as another herbicide called dicamba, had wafted through the air from farms nearly two miles away.

Mr. Herr recalled the incident because he is concerned that the Dow Chemical company is on the verge of winning regulatory approval for corn that is genetically engineered to be immune to 2,4-D, allowing farmers to spray the chemical to kill weeds without harming the corn stalks. (Are your intestines genetically engineered to be immune to corn that is 'genetically engineered to be immune to 2,4-D'? NO! Given the sheer number of cereals, snacks, and almost anything sweet (corn syrup) that involve corn, this might be important) Skeptical
...
Most experts agree that the harm from Agent Orange was caused primarily by its other ingredient, 2,4,5-T, which was taken off the market long ago. By contrast, 2,4-D, first approved in the late 1940s, is considered safe enough for use in many home lawn care products. (Show of hands, how many people eat their lawn?)
...
The activity stems from the huge success, at least initially, of Monsanto’s Roundup Ready crops, which are genetically engineered to tolerate its herbicide Roundup, also sold generically as glyphosate.

Those crops made it so easy for farmers to control weeds by spraying glyphosate that Roundup Ready crops now account for about 90 percent of soybeans and around 70 percent of the corn and cotton grown in the United States. And use of glyphosate skyrocketed, at the expense of rival herbicides.

But farmers relied too much on glyphosate, allowing weeds to develop resistance to the chemical. ('Cause no one saw that coming and raised he-- warned about it.) The problem has been worst in the South, where a particularly strong and prolific plant called Palmer amaranth, or pigweed, has overrun cotton fields, forcing many farmers to hire crews to remove weeds by hand.

Dow’s crops contain a gene from a soil bacterium that causes them to make a protein that breaks down 2,4-D into other chemicals that are not harmful to plants. (I'll get back to this, in a minute.*)

Dow and its supporters say resistance is not that likely to develop because various herbicide-tolerant crops will be competing, meaning no herbicide will be as dominant as Roundup has been. (Refer back to the section on glyphosate overuse. This time, it's different?)

*There is no mention in the articles of what happens when overspray, wind, or rain inevitably rinse some of this off the plants BEFORE they are able to absorb all of it. Multiply TIMES millions of acres. Once it hits the water table and is pulled up by well pumps and unknowingly used by cities for drinking water, or other farmers on their fields or animal feed operations, then it's in everything and everyone.

What do they do with the water you "send back" to them?

Utah man stops stabbing spree with gun

Spoiler: No one was actually shot.

A citizen with a gun stopped a knife wielding man as he began stabbing people Thursday evening at the downtown Salt Lake City Smith's store.
Police say the suspect purchased a knife inside the store and then turned it into a weapon. Smith's employee Dorothy Espinoza says, "He pulled it out and stood outside the Smiths in the foyer. And just started stabbing people and yelling you killed my people. You killed my people."

Espinoza says, the knife wielding man seriously injured two people. "There is blood all over. One got stabbed in the stomach and got stabbed in the head and held his hands and got stabbed all over the arms."

Then, before the suspect could find another victim - a citizen with a gun stopped the madness. "A guy pulled gun on him and told him to drop his weapon or he would shoot him. So, he dropped his weapon and the people from Smith's grabbed him."

The cops showed up later to stand around and look useful. No comments yet from the gun grabber crowd.

Where were the cops DURING the atttack? Well, there's tickets to write in them thar hills, people to be tased, and false DUI arrests to make. Besides, real criminals are, ya know, dangerous.
She made hundreds of DUI arrests a year; like Theron Alexander whose case was thrown out Tuesday, and a man the state paid $40,000 for being tasered while sitting in his car, and Shadoe Snyder a 20 year old car enthusiast who also just had his case thrown out.

Imagine having to submit to one of these psychopaths jabbing a needle into your arm.

At http://www.ij.org/asset-forfeiture-report-utah we learn ... From 2000 to 2004, Utah law was relatively protective of property owners, but no longer.  Today, while the government must prove property is related to a crime subject to forfeiture by clear and convincing evidence, a relatively high standard, and the government bears the burden in innocent owner contests for most forfeitures, 100 percent of property seized and forfeited in connection to alleged controlled substance offenses is allocated to law enforcement through the Crime Reduction Assistance Program.

Finally, a govt program with an appropriate acronym.

A temporary victory for farmers

Backlash over Labor Department’s decision to drop underage family farm labor rule

As many across the heartland applauded the decision, some human-rights activists had harsh words for the Labor Departments withdrawal last week of a proposal for stricter labor standards for youth who work on the nations family farms.

The Obama administration had sought rule changes that would have banned children younger than 16 from what it describe as hazardous work including use of some farm equipment including tractors as well as prevent those younger than 18 from working in stockyards, grain bins and on feed lots.

But a backlash from across the farm belt, including some key Democratic lawmakers, scotched the plan.

They had no business coming up with this garbage. This nose-under-the-tent move was going to be the next step in driving up costs and lowering the number of people qualified to do this type of work. Anyone notice how nearly every agency (justice, education, energy, TSA) LOWERS the quality/availability of whatever it's named after?

Speaking of Thieves & Sexual Assaulters: How would you like to know your kid was "screened" by this guy? Or maybe some drug runner on your coastal flight had a bit of an assist from security?

Dealing with Dog-whistle language

Louise asked me about this, in a blog comment. Interesting question. Few ask it, so here goes... :-)

When you hear dog-whistle language, the first thing to remember is that it is intended for ... the dogs.
Don't respond emotionally.
Although they get some food and water, the dog-fighting business is NOT run for the benefit of the dogs. Their injuries and deaths are just a cost of doing business. Don't get goaded into the fight.

Be pragmatic. I read/listen to a lot of people I agree with on some topics and strongly disagree with on others. Most people cannot do this. Any bit of difference is a deal-breaker. Compartmentalize what you can use from what you can't use. Don't let the dentist work on your car; don't let your car mechanic work on your teeth. LOL

Don't get news from TV; learn to ask the right questions. Once you realize that most of what is broadcast is directed to the bottom 80% (and designed to keep them there), you should start to ask "What is the intended reaction to this info?", "What info am I NOT getting?" IMO, the bias of the media isn't so much liberal or conservative -- the "bias" is the incompleteness of the info. At best, you get just enough info to make you take the exact wrong course of action (no better time to buy a house ...Dead). At worst, you get told that toxic toys and poisonous food are ok, as long as they're cheap

Go to the best sources available and read a lot. Want to make a point about a bill, policy, or speech? Do your best to hunt down a dot-gov or dot-edu source. This puts you ahead of the 80% of people who won't do this.
Some blowhard republican going on and on about Abe Lincoln "freeing the slaves"? It has a lot less altruistic ring to it once you've read Lincoln's letter to Horace Greeley. A northern democrat wagging their finger at "southern" racism has some explaining to do if you ask them about all those northern "sundown towns" and racially restrictive real estate covenants of the past.
Here's one to try out on your own, why did MLK march in Selma, Alabama, but refuse to march in Cicero, Illinois? ;-)

Don't be emotionally owned by either party. For what they have become, they can both be wiped to the dustbin of history for all I care. Neither party cares about the citizens, we are only points to be scored during a game called Election Day. Both their team slogans may as well be "Support us; our brand is less $#!tty than the other brand".

That's the short version, anyway. See Ya!
