It's all right. I doubt anyone on LP will feel superior because the tiny set of dead people in your ancestry you know something about worked with their hands and didn't have a lot.
More likely they'll just read your blog and decide from that who and what you are.
People don't pay a lot of attention to history, as I gather you also don't.

Contrary to popular belief, I enjoy your blog entries. You're on top of things, that I have to say.
So, Yes, you are interesting, and so is Tenaj, Rip, and everyone else who responded. We are what makes this thing happen in the first place.....
Whomever is reading this right now, should listen to some Indian music, while reading this. A nice belly dancing song.....LOL

The solution's too simple to justify the ten pages of comments.
Don't let illegal aliens claim lottery jackpots.
Make them hire someone who's here legally to claim it for them.
If aliens were as good at winning jackpots as they are at giving a day of work for a day of pay, I'd go into the business of making the claims for them. No more than 10 percent fee after all taxes.
Jack
Does that also apply to Aliens from outer space?
I'm sure they have a dosier/resume somewhere in the govt. files. But not to the general public.
What's the currency conversion rate for space alien currency?
You'll have to ask one or several of the other posters to get a clarification on that.

You mean like this one?

We define ourselves as much by our values, what we hold dear, what we fear, what we repudiate as by anything of a personal nature. Everything else spins off those. There's nothing more personal, more revealing about a person than those.
As for what is, what's going to be, what, as you suggest, can never be again, I don't value the opinions of LP members on such matters any more than I do my own. Which is to say, not at all.
It's good you don't value my opinion of you more highly than I value yours of me.
We're at opposite poles.
There's no reason either of us should care what the other thinks about anything at all.
From my perspective, as from yours, that's a perfect blessing.

I think I wrote something just like this on April 15, several pages back although I wasn't referring to hiring someone. It doesn't even make sense to pass a law that would keep illegal immigrants from winning the lottery. They will ask a relative who has a green card to claim it. I don't think it's possible to stop anyone from buying tickets and there's no way I want to be asked to present my ID when I buy one at 7-11. Every time there is a new law passed, it only creates more red tape and more nosey people sticking their shnozzes into our business, so I wish this whole issue would be dropped.

For those GREEDY that think the immigrants are stealing the lottery money,
Why don't you look on the list of soldiers in Irak and see how many GONZALES , GARCIA, GOMEZ, AND RODRIGUEZ are on the list sons and daughters of Immigrants that are fighting for us and giving their live there, think about that and give these people a chance just a chance that's all they need .
By the way I'm an Immigrant from Cuba and I'm very thankfull for America giving me and my family a chance to be free...
In God we Thrust.... God bless America, Americans , Natives and Immigrants "Illegal " or not.
good luck to all
The military people who you are referring too, just happen to be American citizens and I thank them all for the sacrifices they are making. Their parents might not be American citizens, but I'll bet they are not illegal. You missed the point! I'm happy for you and your family that you had an opportunity to come here and enjoy the freedom of this great nation. Enjoy that freedom and when you see a military person in uniform, thank them. That freedom came from the sacrifices made by all of our military personnel, yesterday and today.
God Bless America
I voted yes, besides the money will probably be used better than some past lottery winners have used the money.
There are thousands upon thousands of soldiers in the U.S. military who are not American citizens. They come from all over the world. They are all honorable men and women, and eventually will have the chance to be American citizens. These honorable men and women are quietly and patiently waiting in line. They will make great citizens, no doubt.
Now, compare them to the rowdy illegal aliens who have discovered that by creating some noise, they get special attention. First, they stealthily sneak into the country...

I always knew there were mercenaries and people who have special skills paid to carry out secret missions, but I never sat back and thought about the non-citizens who join the U.S. military fighting for freedom. Your post prompted me to google some articles. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

csfb, They can join only if they applied for the papers legally. So the original point clarified, was correct.
Q. Can a non-U.S. Citizen join the United States Military?
Yes. A non-citizen can enlist in the military. However, federal law prohibits non-citizens from becoming commission or warrant officers.
In order for a non-citizen to enlist in the military, he/she must first be a legal immigrant (with a green card), permamently residing in the United States. It's important to note that the military cannot and will not assist in the immigration process. One must immigrate first, using normal immigration quotas and procedures, and -- once they've established an address in the United States -- they can find a recruiter's office and apply for enlistment.

Looks as though the poll's running 2/1 in favor of making them get someone who's inside legally to claim their wins in their stead.
yes they should be able to
[ 43 ]
[30.71%]
no they should not be able to
[ 87 ]
[62.14%]
not sure at this time
[ 10 ]
[7.14%]
However, since:
They're 'dishonorable', (quote-unquote csfb) unlike the folks who pointed out that illegal aliens ain't honorable,
They're rowdy, which good legal residents are not, (quote-unquote csfb),
They're SNEAKY(paraphrase quote-unquote csfb),
I'm figuring they'll figure out how to get the job done. A lot hire professional 'coyotes' to get them across the border and into the interior of the US. Maybe they'll just use a special kind of coyote to cash their winnings, or more likely, a cousin or nephew who's here illegally.
But the poll runs about par for the course.
Roughly 2/3 of legal residents can be easily distinguished from illegal aliens in the following ways:
They're honorable.... they put Chinese manufactured yellow ribbon stickers on their automobolls and wave Chinese manufactured US flags by way of proclaiming their blind support for the US and US policies.
They're not rowdy. They sit around watching football on television, watch the news when they have to, and grumble about taxes, protestors, illegal aliens, and the government. But they do it at home, where they also do their drinking. The only fighting they do is with their wives and kids. Most of the time it doesn't come to physical blows.
They're not sneaky. They're a simple, God-fearing folk who believe everything they're told. They fear death in ways more cunning, intelligent foreigners haven't thought of. They spend their lives thinking of more things the government ought to do something about without raising taxes. Their aim is to make life more orderly, less rowdy, with non-English speaking darker-skinned people keeping out of sight in the restaurant kitchens washing dishes etc. NOT standing in front of cameras holding big, fake checks, making spectacles of themselves.

I said that in my first post on this thread, that most illegal immigrants have relatives living here. I do agree that they are not any more "rowdy" than the good 'ol boys. In fact, all the millions of people demonstrating never caused any trouble. There were over 75,000 people in little Fort Myers, FL and the only problem created was a big traffic jam and a lot of litter to be picked up the following day. Not one arrest or case of drunken or disorderly conduct. Yet there were people interviewed in downtown Fort Myers on tv who were petrified and said "my children hid under the bed" or "I was afraid to go out of my house." So your point is well taken.
However, illegal is illegal. I don't think we should automatically grant citizenship to 11 million people who got here by sneaking into our country when families have been waiting 20 years to bring their relatives over here the legal way. It's a tough call. I remember watching a heartbreaking movie about 2 young people from Guatemala called El Norte that showed what some people go through just to get to America. They crawled through tunnels infested with rats. Very good movie if anyone is interested. Don't know if it's available on tape or DVD. Gosh! I watched that back in the 80s.!!
But forgetting any personal or political viewpoints, too many people have waited a long time to become citizens the legal way, so immigrants trying to force their way in by demonstrations and intimidation shouldn't work. In other words, it just ain't fair!

you make sense. in a simplistic example - if you waited on line for tickets and someone tried to get to front of line - be p****ed as all hell.

I agree with the first part of what you've said. We don't need 11 million new citizens, no matter how they got here. We don't need 11 million new citizens even if they're born here.
One obvious way we can do to slow population is through stopping immigration entirely.
I don't know what we ought to do, but I know what I'd like to see us do. Halting the rise in the numbers of legal citizenry is a personal preference of mine. I honestly don't understand why there's any such animal as 'legal' immigration to this land.
But forgetting any personal or political viewpoints, too many people have waited a long time to become citizens the legal way, so immigrants trying to force their way in by demonstrations and intimidation shouldn't work. In other words, it just ain't fair!
I haven't noticed 'fair' plays much part in this life, except in political rhetoric and personal preference. But I agree with the general concept. My personal preference is they shouldn't be made citizens, whether it's fair, or whether it's unfair.
been waiting 20 years to bring their relatives over here the legal way.
The road to where ever they came from runs both ways.
If they want to be around their relatives they can go back there. They can live there, they can visit there. Same as their relatives can visit them here.
There's nothing anywhere says, because a person became a naturalized, legal citizen, all the cousins and aunties ought to be able to take advantage of the foot in the door so's to come into the house with their luggage and nicknacks to live and have kids. They're living already, where ever they are. My preference is that they continue to do so. But if they want to do it while waiting another century on some list, no problem.
what some people go through just to get to America. They crawled through tunnels infested with rats.
A lot of illegal immigrants go through a lot worse to get here. Coyotes sometimes take their money and find it convenient to leave them locked, packed tight in a bobtail truck parked in the middle of nowhere until the heat and thirst kills them all. They're frequently robbed, raped, beaten during their journeys to get here.
The people who come here illegally have courage, determination, sometimes intelligence, and a willingness to toil to earn a living. They have gumption enough, drive enough to take a lot of risks.
That's a lot less obvious in those who wait somewhere 20 years on some list in order to become legal citizens. My thought is this nation could use a lot more people of the first sort, though I wouldn't want to see them made legal citizens.
But I wouldn't mind seeing them win some lotteries and take their money back home.
For that matter, I wouldn't mind seeing it made compulsory that everyone who wins a lottery becomes an expatriot and takes all his relatives with him to live elsewhere.
Jack

Although I wouldn't want them made citizens, I'd like to have Immigration Service take tissue samples as they're being shipped home. This country could use some of what they have in the gene pool. Probably there's some kind of technology out there to make certain every baby legally born in the US gets slipped a mickey as a fetus. A dose of courage, determination, self-sufficiency, willingness to take personal responsibility for personal well-being.
Imagine! A generation from now there'd be a nation of young people as different from their parents as that. Wow! What a thought.
