Recently, I bought a $5 worth of numbers for Powerball. Gave the cashier a $20 bill, and he gave me $5 bill as change. He was so sure that I gave him a $10 bill, not $20. The line got longer people cause others has to wait on me, and seeing the back and forth debate. He looked at me for awhile like 30 seconds to see if I was telling the truth. I said, why don't we look at the camera recording? He said take the $5 and come back tomorrow. I wanted to prove him wrong at the spot and not tomorrow. After 15 mins he gave me back $15 in change and I never went back.

Yeah, I kinda doubt he'd have given you the rest if he had any doubt about it.

A good cashier puts the bill he or she's making change for on the little ledge until the transaction is complete in case there's any question.

Mistakes happen but so do rip-offs.

    Glad you stood your ground.

I really hope more people have stories to tell about this so we can maybe somehow develop a profile of dishonest lottery clerks to look out for and their MO (modus operandi) so people can watch for common themes that might tip us off to something happening or about to happen.

Some members may have scam experiences that none of us ever considered that could educate us and make us more careful.

For instance, I never new about the expired lottery ticket scam that fronjan told us about. I'll now be watching dates because of that.

      .

Dishonest clerks stealing money from the store owner and customers have been around since the first owner hired one. And when the stores began selling lottery tickets, it gave more dishonest clerks new ways to steal money from the customers. Simply short changing customers has evolved into dishonest clerks telling players their tickets weren't winners and pocketing the money when the customer leaves the store.

"Some members may have scam experiences that none of us ever considered that could educate us and make us more careful."

There are just so many times you can tell someone to check their tickets to see how much they won and signing before handing the ticket to a clerk or at least have enough sense to ask for the ticket back before you decide it's the players fault. I've seen people hand clerks a large number of tickets and have them check for winners when the majority of tickets are worth nothing. This is an open invitation for a dishonest clerk to scam them.

When I play pick-4, I always get my straight bets and box bets on separate tickets but many times clerks have tried to give me straight/box or back-up tickets. It makes me wonder if some of those clerks have cashed pick-4 straight/box tickets and only paid the player for the box hit and keeping the straight hit. We might think players should know if they hit the number straight, but when they ask a clerk to check it to see if it's a winner, they probably don't and are happy to collect the box winnings. The bottom line is many players have no idea if they won and if they did, for how much.

I recently moved from Ohio to Kentucky and the Kentucky Lottery has Cashing Agents located in just about every county. These stores are usually high volume sales stores that will cash tickets worth up to $5000. The clerks are experienced in cashing tickets, have enough cash on hand and because the store is paid to cash tickets, it's less likely it will have a dishonest clerk. While Kentucky players can buy their tickets anywhere, they should go to these Cashing Agents to collect their winnings.

More good info and advice, thanks Stack. I never considered that straight/box angle for a scam either but it makes sense. Pay them for the box win and keep the straight win money.

Good advice on cashing only at the Cashing Agents locations too. Wish all states had that. I almost wish the human element was taken completely out of the equation by just having huge ATM's reading the tickets and paying you off, maybe directly to your bank account or something. Of course somebody would probably compromise a system like that too.

Not very many stores can payoff $500 pick-3 winners or $400 pick-4 doubles box bets so cashing the tickets can be more complicated than actually picking the numbers. In Ohio the chain grocery stores usually had enough money to cash the tickets. Some part time players believe they can only cash the ticket at the store where it was purchased and they are more vulnerable than experienced players.

The biggest problem are the people having no idea if the ticket is a winner and/or for how much, When somebody hands a clerk a ticket and ask them to check it, and the clerk sees the ticket is worth thousands, the temptation it there for any clerk. As much as I hate to say it, some people shouldn't be playing the lottery and are just inviting a clerk to scam them.

Race tracks have self betting machines and I've been to casinos that use ATM like cards for slot play. The betting vouchers show the player how much the ticket is worth and then they take it to a cashier.

I like that last thing you said there.

Have machines that scan your lottery ticket and give you a voucher to redeem for cash or additionally, have the machine pay it out if it's under a certain amount.

I don't know Gagirl. I wonder if it would do any good to call the GA Lottery and explain what happened and maybe they could see if those numbers were sold at that store at that time, going by the time on your other tickets. Whether they would is the question and whether they could or would do anything about it is the other.

Unless they had tape of that cashier then cashing the ticket in somewhere, otherwise anybody cashing it could say they found it on the ground outside or something.

I would let the store manager/owner know about it in case it's happened before or happens again so there's a record and I'd also call the GA Lottery to see what they say about it and if there's any recourse possible.

If it looks as if you don't know what the hel_ you are doing, some or many will try to get you, but the same goes exactly for customers, some will try to get the clerks, it works both ways.

Oh yeah, you're undoubtedly right about that LANTERN, there's shifty people on both sides of the counter I'm sure. Think about the times the clerk forgot to charge you for something and you told them about it or gave you too much change and you gave it back to them. There's a lot of people who wouldn't do that and the clerk in many instances has to make up the shortage in the till. I'm not saying all the clerks are dishonest, it just seems that way when you've experienced their scams a couple times. I'm sure the ratio of crooks is the same as the general population. I'd just like to see more of them caught and doing some jail time.

Devil Woman? LOL, TTL! That's one of my favorite songs by Marty Robbins! (I've known a few too (devil wimmins), even married some of em).

I can see where you're coming from with 8 loser $20's in a row though. I can't blame ya. That's gotta be a little (a lot) disheartening. Bummer.

No, the only problems I've had with actual people have been finding myself in a situation where I misplaced my paper and tried to use plastic to no avail. Eventually, I did find the paper.

Not too long ago, however, I did an advance play of a certain number. I told the machine that I wanted the next five drawings, including both day and night, but it gave me the next five NIGHT drawings. So, I had to put another $5 into the machine to play the day drawings.

Today's winning 3-ball is going to be a number between 000 and 999.

In a lot of states, lotteries benefit education. That makes the REAL winners the only people who can't play!
