Orange County doesn't seem to churn out many big winners in Scratchers.  I think it may have more to do with the fact that fewer people play in some of the more affluent areas.  I can't even remember the last big winner in Newport Beach, etc.  Makes me think that a lot of these places are sitting on some pretty decent cards that will never be scratched.

I saw this post and Jon did a great job at mapping out winners for 2012

    http://www.lotterypost.com/thread/257573

There are still some winners in Orange County, but seems like the biggest prizes are claimed near Fresno or remote areas. Intriguing to see two Set for Life prizes in Hayward and nearby each other.

You have a point aboiut affluent areas. It costs money for store owners to run the lottery games, not sure if lack of playing will justify their needs to continue selling them.

I don't know Devil. I believe Westiminster is considered OC and I know for a fact there are alot of scratch ticket afficionados that live there.

Nabbed another $100 on $5M JP, ticket #04, $50 Fast Spot plus $50 single match. Single buy from bin.

Of course, also lost $20 on a bunch of crossword/bingo, all 6 were losers, 1 of each from vending machine. So came away only up $60...figures.

                    I bought 3 $5 Mega X Words, 1 1M Fortune, and 1 5M Jackpot. The results were as follows:

                    X word - ($15, 0, $15)

                    Fortune - ($10)

                    Jackpot - ($25)

Strange way to win $20 but I'll take it.

Hey, thanks for all your helpful posts...

I discovered that whether in the vending machines or a clerk issued ticket, you have to find a place that does not watch the tickets for winners.

I went to a market where the machine had a sign on it as out of order and the managee opened it up for me and inside where single tickets stored on the shelf. I asked to buy those and he said no. Suspicious at best.

Then a place where I got a string of losing tickets, I asked the clerk if he plays and he said no. But when I took the losing tickets from the trash, I saw several $20 tickets that were not scratched and not even the bar code was scratched only the 3 digits the retailer enters which means it was the retailer who played those tickets. This confirmed my theorey that the retailers watch and play the tickets when they think a winner is coming.

So I tested my theory, I put $20 on the counter and asked the retailer to select the lucky tickets for me so he said that ca for life was due a winner because no one had gotten on in a long string of losers...well...I did not get the winner....but maybe today....

I also discovered in that even Iin the machines, the first 3 tickets of diamond mill. Were not in the machine.

So basically, I think the only way to win, is to be a retailer and do what they do, sell the losers and watch for the winners.

Yep, like I always say, Scratchers is a competitive game. You are playing against other players for the same wins on the roll. And the clerk has an unfair advantage.(if they play)

There are certain stores that simply payout less, and that's probably due to your competition. Either lots of win chasers, ticket hawks, or a clerk doing one or both. Dont play there.

Play at stores where the clerk is not able to watch the machines/bins and hawk you, like a supermarket vending machine or a 7-11 where the clerk is always busy with a line of customers, and can't be chasing or hawking on you. Watch out for coffee/liquor stores with a lot of regulars. You are viewed as the prey in there.

If your choices are limited, and you must play at those kinds of places, you need to adopt an insurgent strategy. Buy a bunch at a time like at odds or twice odds (like 4 to 8 tickets at a time) and then leave and don't cash them there, or not that day. That way they never know what you walked away with. And don't let them or other players see what you're buying. Or...you could go to the dark side and become a chaser or hawk yourself.

Of course, if you can find a friendly store where the clerk does not play and has helpful/truthful tips, that is better.

I think its fine they as long as they do not sell you a ticket that is partially scratched anywhere, if so you could report them to the Lottery. It has happened in the past, recent, and will happen in the future. I think they probably saw a trend of how many winners/losers come from the first three tickets.

To me, I see the benefit of buying as a retailer is the 6% comission they get for selling each ticket as well as the 1% they get from cashing out the ticket that is under $599.

If I saw lots of $20 tickets in the trash (or $10/$5 even for that matter), I would have picked them up and held onto them for entries on the 2nd Chace draw.

                            Just to clarify:

The clerk doesn't get the 6% sales or 1% cashing commission, the store does.

Most scratch players will agree, a clerk playing has an unfair advantage by being able to watch the redemptions on the roll, they shouldn't be allowed to play, IMHO.

Thanks for the clarification. I did not pay too much attention to the clerks or other people when I used to chase until I win on 3 of the tickets. To stop that habit I now take the tickets away from the store and scratch them so that I do not chase.

The new 2nd Chance system is up, originally promised to be up at 7am, but now its up again. Time to enter all those losing tickets I amassed.
